Ugh, this makes me so nervous! We just submitted our applications for new passports last week. We're traveling the 2nd week of May. We did pay for expedited processing and delivery, so hopefully they'll be here in plenty of time. The lady at the post office said we didn't need the expedited service, they were processing in 3-5 weeks, but I didn't feel comfortable with that. The State Department website said 5-7 weeks which really cuts it close.

We just replaced ours a couple months ago. 4 large double windows and 6 regular size windows. We chose double-pane low-E, single-hung aluminum windows, which is a huge upgrade from our 1970s single pane aluminum windows and storm windows that didn't open. Our cost from a local window company was $14k. We haven't replaced our sliding door yet but expect that to run $2-3k. We also replaced all our sunroom windows, which was $25k.

I put French turn rods in my kids' bedrooms and they are amazing at keeping the room darker! Combined with blackout shades, it is very conducive to sleeping. I probably wouldn't put them in a living room or more "decorative" space, but I highly recommend them for bedrooms.

I'm so far behind on planning this year. Usually by now I've purchased everything and am making lesson plans. This year I'm still undecided on a few things! My oldest is taking her first online class this year. The policy is 10% deduction for every day the assignment is late. An assignment can be re-submitted for one week after the work is graded to earn a higher grade. For example, if an assignment was two days late and the student also missed some answers, they could resubmit but the assignment would max out at 80% (20% deduction for being late). It has seemed like a very fair policy to me, and the teacher has generally returned all grades within a week of the due date.

My daughter loved Guest Hollow! If you want a smorgasbord of ideas to choose from, with great literature and the option to count it for multiple credits, Guest Hollow is a great choice. My daughter especially liked the Geography Now videos that are scheduled. If you want a more textbook route, with a very Christian worldview, Notgrass is a great choice. Notgrass also includes other subjects like Bible, writing, and vocab, but in my opinion it needs more to count for credits in those areas. Guest Hollow easily could count for geography, cooking, a fine arts credit, etc.

One other thought - it's helpful to know their expected pace so you can estimate when you need to start watching more closely for the runner to come by. Online tracking can help with this.

Don't bother being at the start line. The crowds will likely be too thick for you to see your runner and your runner will be distracted by starting his watch, not tripping over other runners, establishing his pace, etc. Best option is to be a few miles in, maybe around the halfway point or a little further. The crowds will have thinned out and it will be easier to see each other, plus your runner may be ready for some encouragement to keep going. Depending on how the course is laid out, you may be able to get from a spot in the middle of the course to the finish line before your runner comes down the last stretch to the finish.

My dd16 and dd14 get $20/week pursuant to completing their chores. At a minimum, chores include emptying the dishwasher every day, folding and putting away all towels and bed linens, putting away their own laundry, cleaning the bathrooms weekly, and sweeping/mopping the tile floors weekly. It also includes whatever other tasks they are asked to help with, which is usually things like outdoor yard work (weeding, raking, washing cars, etc.). They must save 25%, give 25%, and the rest is theirs to spend however they want (within reason). They pay for youth group outings, birthday gifts for friends, and any "extra" clothing that they want but don't really "need." DD16 will be expected to pay for her own gas and help with insurance once she starts driving. But she also has a part-time job that will help with those expenses.

If she has a dry food that she likes, you can add some warm water to make it soft and moist. I had to do that for my cat when she had an abscess on her chin and it hurt to eat dry food. She loved the softer texture of her usual food but won't normally touch wet canned cat food.

It's similar to my brownie recipe which calls for 1 cup cocoa powder and 1-1/3 cups flour. My recipe uses 1 cup white sugar. It makes a 9x13 pan of brownies. If you try subbing cocoa powder for the baking squares, you'll probably need to add a little more oil.

I have no idea! Their website says the DVDs will be available in August. I guess the streaming version is available now, but I prefer the DVDs.
