  1. Well, you're ahead of me on this because I don't even get how the answer is c, lol. It's too early in the morning for common core... :)
  2. I think I'm going to use Abeka's 7th grade literature program next for my oldest. I know there are comprehension questions and I'm wondering if there are some writing assignments as well? Or is it *just* comprehension questions? And what do I need to buy? I see there is a Teacher Edition for the student book and a Homeschool English 7 Lesson Plan book. Which one would I need? Or both?? Thanks!
  3. I just got a newsletter last week and again they mentioned Algebra for 9th and 10th grades is in the works. But they won't give any more specifics than that.
  4. I'm curious to know when homeschoolers have their dc take Algebra I. I have an upcoming 7th grader and I'm not sure when to have him take it. It seems like most public schools around here have kids take it in 8th. I took it in 9th and did very well with it. I'm inclined to have my dc take it in 9th as I did, but I don't want to disadvantage them in any way. When did (or will) your dc take it and why?
  5. Yes, this helps, thank you! I looked through it more last night and I think I'm getting a grasp on things. I have the homeschool package, so probably not as many components as the classroom package. I bought this because I wanted an all-in-one language arts program that is secular and up to current standards. This looked it would fit the bill.
  6. Has anyone here used this?? I just bought the grade 5 level and it looks good, but wow... I'm overwhelmed! There seems to be a lot of components and worksheets and I'm not sure how to tie it all together?? If anyone has used this, can you tell me HOW you used it? What you used and didn't use? Please don't tell me you didn't like it.... this program was too expensive for us NOT to use it, LOL. :001_smile:
  7. I'm looking at 7th grade LA options for next year.... Does anyone have any experience with Prentice Hall's The Reader's Journey or Prentice Hall Literature? If so, what do think? Thanks!!
  8. Does anyone know of good audio character building stories that are secular? Something similar to Adventures in Odyssey... Thanks!
  9. Do you think it would be hard for a secular homeschooler to use Abeka's high school English and literature courses? It seems like the English might be fine because grammar is grammar, but what about the lit? Thanks!!
  10. I am so happy for you, really. :) I remember our first day of school after we dropped HOD... it was like a breath of fresh of air. I felt completely liberated and free, lol. Like you, that was when I finally figured out that I just need to do my own thing. If you are like me, you will have no regrets and not look back. :)
  11. Does anyone know of a schedule somewhere that correlates pages from Usborne Ancient World with Mystery of History I? If so, I would be forever grateful. :) Thanks!
  12. I used Bigger a few years ago and I really didn't like it at all. I think I even posted a rant on here about it, lol. I 100% agree with you about the science and coywork, I felt the exact same way. Some of those copywork assignments were so loooong, I felt sorry for my ds. I remember one particular science activitity where my ds had to do an incredible amount of copying and drawing. It took him like 90 mins., it was ridiculous. I lost my patience with it and ended up dropping Bigger altogether at about unit 20. I just couldn't do it anymore. I didn't even try to tweak it lol. :) I also hated DITHOR and ditched it early on. Anyway, I think your plan looks great! I think it's perfectly fine to tweak/drop whatever you need to to make things work. These elementary years of homeschooling are so fun and precious, do not waste them by getting bogged down in things that aren't working for you. :)
  13. Agreeing with Ellie. I think the writing instruction in R&S English is well done and enough. But you will want your ds to practice what he's learned with writing in other subject areas if that makes sense. So, IMO, he won't need additional writing *instruction*, but should practice writing more than just what is in the English book. I hope that makes sense! I also do not use the worksheets.
  14. I agree with Ellie...she should definitely be able to go right into the 5th grade spelling book. But if she hasn't had much grammar, I would be inclined to start her in the 4th grade book for English.
  15. Thanks, I appreciate your feedback. Yeah, that's what I was thinking about the writing. We've been using R&S English all along, but we use it a grade level behind, so my ds is slated to do the 8th grade book in 9th grade. I'm just trying to sort out a general plan for high school English in my mind. I was thinking splitting up the 8th grade book over two years and adding another writing program, like EIW or Jensen's Format writing along with a lit. course. Then doing R&S English 9 in 11th grade and English 10 in 12th grade. I don't know though, this is my first dc going into high school and I feel pretty lost overall, lol. :)
  16. Do you think R&S English 9 and 10 would be appropiate for 11th and 12th grades? If so, and if I added literature study, would that be enough for 1 full credit? Would I need to add anything for writing? Thanks!!
  17. Understanding Writing by Susan Bradrick. It's $75, but it would cover all of your dc from grades 1-12.
  18. DITHOR from Heart of Dakota. My ds didn't seem to mind it too much, but I absolutely could. not. stand. it. I don't really like HOD in general, for that matter. :tongue_smilie:
  19. If we use R&S English a grade level behind, (if my 6th grader were to use the 5th grade book this year for example), do you think the writing assignments would be enough? Or do you think we would need to supplement the writing portion? Thanks!
  20. No, it isn't a surprise and the bride knows about it. In fact, I'm pretty sure the bride requested it. I'm totally fine with the other bridesmaid taking things into her own hands. But I wish she would have consulted me about the dates.... if she has such a huge problem with me not attending everything, why did she not ask me about the dates first? Or try to schedule the shower and BP on the same day?? This girl really got under my skin with her e-mail about not attneding the BP. She doesn't know me at all, we've never even met. She has no idea about my life or what I have going on. And she just jumps all over me about not attending without asking me why (not that it's any of her business) or expressing any kind of understanding. How rude (IMO). The more I think about it, the more irritated I get, lol.
