  1. I did MFW K last year and didn't really like it. I was bummed because I was expecting to *love* it! The worksheets/activities were the same every week and it moved too slowly. My ds was so bored, I ended up having to modify it a lot. And I didn't like the library book recommendations either.
  2. It is bad everywhere.. We live in WA and it's just as bad here. Last year they cuts lots and lots of teachers and this year they will cut more. It is just ridiculous. Several districts in our state recently sued the state for "lack of funding for basic education" and won. Of course, they won't see any money from this but I suppose it makes a statement. My husband is a high school ps teacher and he is really seeing the effects of the huge budget cuts....kids are having a hard time getting to school because of lack of bus transportation, class sizes are rising (as if they can get any bigger!?!?), teacher morale is down, alternative schools are being shut down which means a higher drop-out rate, I could just go on and on.
  3. I probably spend about 1 1/2 hours with a pre-schooler and a 1st grader.
  4. I'm planning on HOD's Beyond Little Hearts fpretty much as waritten for my up and coming 2nd grader. I'll add in art appreciation with a couple of the Come Look with Me books and Building Thinking Skills Book 1. HOD has turned out to be a good fit for us this year and I'm looking forward to using it again! :)
  5. My dh is a public school teacher so we take summers off when he's home. I'm new to homeschooling too and have also wondered what to do over the summers....reading? Reading and math? Nothing?? LOL This summer I plan on having my oldest ds keep up with his reading and that's it! Nothing else!! I want our summers to be a true break and not a "light" version of school, if that makes any sense. I've also thought about what if the kids forget everything? I guess I'll cross that bridge if we ever come to it but I don't see it being too much of a problem at this point for us. :)
  6. I don't know, maybe it's because she's so young so the book has gotten a bit "ahead of her"? Have you tried slowing down the pace? Maybe she just needs some time to catch up, so to speak. I'm sure some of the other ladies on here will have more advice. :)
  7. Awesome!! Thanks for posting this and letting us know!! :)
  8. We will finish HOD's Little Hearts for His Glory, The Reading Lesson and Singapore 1A/1B.
  9. My older son did not know most sounds going into K.... I didn't really go over this with him for his pre-k year. Now my younger son will pretty much know all letters and sounds going in to K I think.
  10. Thanks, I'll check it out! :) Where have I heard of this book before?? Is it recommended from Galloping the Globe?
  11. I've tried Granny Smith and one other kind I can't remember... I'm pretty sure it wasn't Fuji. Thanks for the article link!
  12. I'm at my wits end with this!! I've tried cutting the apples into larger chunks (versus thin slices) and I've tried a couple of different types of apples. The pies always taste great, but the apples are always mushy!! What is the deal?? It is driving me insane!! :banghead: Now I'm on a mission.... I WILL figure this out if that's the last thing I do. LOL
  13. I voted $500-700, but I'm really not sure exactly. I figured for this upcoming school year (2010-2011) I will spend about $500 on actual curriculum materials and then there's always the extracurricular stuff like swimming lessons, co-op dues, etc. So I bet we're getting close to $700. And that's not using the library for curriculum at all. :)
  14. Oh yes, I'm always planning, lol. :) I'm 99.9% sure we're gonna stick with HOD next year so it would be Beyond Little Hearts for my oldest and Little Hearts for my youngest.
  15. Phonics/Grammar - The Reading Lesson (no grammar at this point) Reading (a program or literature?) - HOD's LHFHG Health - Not doing this year. Science - Our Father's World (CLP) History - LHFHG Math- Singapore Primary 1A/1B
