  1. I am a long time lurker but, I just wanted to say that I agree with you. There have been many threads that I have been interested in reading but, after having to wade through the many repeated bean dip or kilt posts, I gave up. I understand the point may be to calm a possibly "volatile" situation but, when there are more bean dip posts than replies to the original post, it becomes unfair to the OP. jmho *slinking back to lurkdom* Mel
  2. Can someone who has used this program, tell me what chapter the first dissection is done? I would like to hold off on ordering the dissection kit until it is needed. I also have a question about the dvd program. BJU sells a dissection dvd seperate from the dvd program. Do I need to purchase it or are the dissections shown on the dvd classes? Thanks, Mel
  3. Thanks for your reply. Ds did RS last year, but we really feel like he needs more grammar. It's good to hear that the two programs copliment each other.
  4. Hi, I am looking at this program to use as a supplement for Rosetta Stone next year. Has anyone used Breaking the Barrier spanish with Rosetta Stone? Do they work well together? On the BTB site they have a package deal that includes student text, answer key and cd's along with another book called "Oasis" for $60. Will I need the teachers guide also? I'm also open to other suggestions to use as a supplement for RS. Thanks, Mel
  5. I agree....I just bought the first volume to use with my 10th grader next year. It looks really good.
  6. What a good question! I've been thinking about this also. BJU is so expensive, but my ds is very similar to your ds. I'm looking at BJU because I'm just not confident in my teaching him what he needs to know for Literature. I would love to know if there are other options out there similar to BJU.
  7. I agree that it would be cheaper to do it that way. The only problem is that I would only be using those two courses. I've already got Notgrass world history and Math Relief Algebra. I might possibly use the bible, but I'm not sure. If I sold the books would I be able to get enough back to make it worth it? Grr....I don't know what to do. If only BJU didn't charge so much for the seperate subjects..
  8. Thank You! You've helped me so much. :) I agree that it would be nice if I could purchase just the lit portion. If that were possible, I would go with something entirely different for grammar. As is, it is to expensive to not use the majority of the program. Thanks for your help. I feel better now knowing that the writing can be skipped without a lot of hassle. I really think that ds will do better having someone else teach lit analysis.
  9. Hi, I am trying to decide what to use for ds next year and could use some input. I've been planning to use BJU's 10th grade DVD English and Biology, but now I'm having second thoughts about the English. My main reason for wanting to use BJU is for the literature instruction. I don't need the writing portion of it. Ds used Write at Home last year and it worked very well so I've already signed him up for it this year. I guess we could do Write at Home and BJU writing, but I'm afraid that might be a bit much for my reluctant writer. So, my question is, Can BJU english be used without the writing? Would it even be worth it to spend the money for the dvd program while skipping the writing portion? Thanks, Mel
  10. I'm normally a lurker, but I'm interested in the answers to your questions also. I've always used SL, but have decided to switch to Notgrass next year. DS15 will be doing world history. :)
  11. I am normally a lurker but, i wanted to reply to this post. My ds is using Lial's BCM through the summer as a review and pre algebra course. So far this is working well. He will be going into 9th grade next year and we're hoping he'll be ready for Algebra by the second semester. Blessings, Mel
  12. I am actually getting a copy of the book from another HS Mom when they get done with it. If I decide to go with that plan I may be interested in the dvt's, if you still have them. Thanks!
  13. Hi, I have a question about Lial's BCM. My 8th grade ds is a little behind in his math. He is just finishing up 7th grade math with Teaching textbooks and is scheduled to go into pre algebra next. I am hoping to find something to get him caught up so that he'll be ready for Algebra next year,(9th grade). I was thinking that I would use the BCM over the summer to review certain concepts ie: fractions, decimals and also do pre algebra with him so hopefully he would be ready to start Alg. fairly soon into his 9th grade year. So on to my question.....Can someone tell me what chapter pre algebra begins in the BCM? Does my plan sound feasible? Thanks, Mel
