  1. Definitely jump on the opportunity. An OG tutor in our area costs $100 an hour.

I have 3 dyslexic children - 2 very severe. One of my children attends a school that costs $56K a year. This summer we've been seeing a tutor for 3 hours a week. It is well worth it to see how efficient this tutor uses instructional time and to see how much my son is learning.

Nothing beats 1:1 for these students. even a specialized school can not come close to what this tutor is doing with our son. If your dd is mild - they will likely move at a quicker pace.

I think the direct, multisensory instruction will help with spelling - which is the bane of every dyslexic.

At $20 an hour, I'd be signing up for an hour a day! Without batting an eyelash.

  2. Prevention and praise

Preview the exact behavior wanted ahead of time, being very specific so they know what it looks like. They can practice ahead too.

Also, have you read All of a Kind Family? THe mother wanted her girls to dust cheerfully w/o dawdling......she hid a number of coins in the room to be dusted and made the chore a fun one so the girls fought over whose job it was to dust. I thought that was pretty clever.

And then, show genuine gratitude and praise for a job well done.:001_smile: My kids seem to need me to spell out why their efforts were helpful.

  3. Sarah,

I have kids with dyslexia and dysgraphia and math is very difficult for them if taught the traditional way.

THings that have helped my kids:

Illustrating concepts in concrete ways (for example, using physical models such as base ten blocks. or using money to illustrate decimal place values or hershey bars to discuss fraction concepts)

Let your kids do the math orally for a while, as you record what they say so that they can see how to represent things in symbols.

Repeat, review concepts and procedures frequently adn build off old lessons so that they build confidence.

    Build concepts incrementally.

Use games for practicing facts vs pencil and paper.....
