  1. I can't see how to search FS posts. I tested by using the search box at the top right-hand corner and "no results were found" for one of my own FS items. "Seeing Stars" Can someone help me figure out how Ican search for a specific item:? Thanks
  2. Since the changeover, on the For Sale forum, the "start new topic" has been greyed out. Does anyone know what I can do about that? Thanks
  3. Definitely jump on the opportunity. An OG tutor in our area costs $100 an hour. I have 3 dyslexic children - 2 very severe. One of my children attends a school that costs $56K a year. This summer we've been seeing a tutor for 3 hours a week. It is well worth it to see how efficient this tutor uses instructional time and to see how much my son is learning. Nothing beats 1:1 for these students. even a specialized school can not come close to what this tutor is doing with our son. If your dd is mild - they will likely move at a quicker pace. I think the direct, multisensory instruction will help with spelling - which is the bane of every dyslexic. At $20 an hour, I'd be signing up for an hour a day! Without batting an eyelash. Best, vicki

  8. There are Karate or martial arts classes designed for kids with neurological issues (whether ADHD, NLD, apraxia or whatever) that might be good. Martial arts seems like a good physical outlet - are there any with small classsizes?
  9. I think it's easy to get burned out. It helps to keep perspective - remembering the goals and long term benefits while making sure to do things to recharge your own batteries so that you don't run out of steam.....

  13. Prevention and praise Preview the exact behavior wanted ahead of time, being very specific so they know what it looks like. They can practice ahead too. Also, have you read All of a Kind Family? THe mother wanted her girls to dust cheerfully w/o dawdling......she hid a number of coins in the room to be dusted and made the chore a fun one so the girls fought over whose job it was to dust. I thought that was pretty clever. And then, show genuine gratitude and praise for a job well done.:001_smile: My kids seem to need me to spell out why their efforts were helpful.
  14. I've never understood the need to learn grammar for 8 years! Good grief, I'd tire of it too. We used MCT and did our own research in the context of studying Latin. It gave purpose for the study of English grammar and provided some interest .....
  15. "OP, I just wanted to say what a gracious, kind job you did in not assigning negative intent to the kids or the parents while presenting this problem.j" :iagree::iagree: Kudos to you and I hope you can help the child manage situations more constructively.
  16. Sarah, I have kids with dyslexia and dysgraphia and math is very difficult for them if taught the traditional way. THings that have helped my kids: Illustrating concepts in concrete ways (for example, using physical models such as base ten blocks. or using money to illustrate decimal place values or hershey bars to discuss fraction concepts) Let your kids do the math orally for a while, as you record what they say so that they can see how to represent things in symbols. Repeat, review concepts and procedures frequently adn build off old lessons so that they build confidence. Build concepts incrementally. Use games for practicing facts vs pencil and paper..... Best
  17. I forgot, we've used MCT vocab and have done Latin studies.....all helpful in expanding vocab.
  18. I've used Wordly Wise and MegaWords in the past....but now I am pulling vocab from other studies and making sure kids have clear, precise meanings.
