  1. Thank you. So far it looks similar at our home. We figured about 2 days per section. He watches approximately 1/2 the video then does the first 1/2 of the problems on day 1 (every other odd). Then, on day 2, the second half of the video and problems.(every other odd) He follows along in the book so he knows when to stop watching. In this way, the problems are fresh in his mind. The start of the book is review so he has been doing a whole section per day. If he misses a problem, we go over it then choose two additional ones from the section. I just love an actual schedule but if we had one, we'd probably skew from it quite a bit anyway. Thanks!
  2. Hi! Has anyone made a schedule for this? If not, how did you work through it? Thanks. Cee Ceee
  3. Hi! Did anyone make a schedule to go along with this? If you did not, how did you work through it? Thanks! Cee Cee
  4. Thank you. It looks great but I am not certain. We've used BJU thru 6th grade math and EPGY last year as well. Cee Cee
  5. Thank you. I never considered doing it on a time basis. I just could not figureo uit the logical breakdown. We did EPGY on a time basis as well. Not my favorite way, however, much better than constantly trying to figure out where to stop. Do you like Kinetic Books? Have you done the Pre Alg? Any thoughts on it if you have done it? Thanks! Cee Cee
  6. Hi All, I downloaded the sample chapter which is Alg. I. However, we would be using Pre Alg. It looks like there are about 15 units (give or take) in a chapter. Do you cover about a unit per day. Each unit seems to cover a lot of information. Do you go through the whole unit for the day, the samples and activities, and then give the "homework" as an assignment? It seems like a high load for one day. However, it appears that to get through the course inb the standard time, that's what it takes. If you have used this and have any insight... Cee Cee
  7. Thanks for the clarification, Ellie, on the levels. Yes, I know that Saxon is incremental...a very different way of math for us. Oh Elizabeth: He is not tired of BJU. He actually likes it. He likes all things math. We have the BJU 7 book here. BJU 6 was such a breeze. BJU 7 doesn't really seem to have any additional challenge for him. He just gets this stuff. That is why I am considering the change. I can't put my finger on it, but I did not care too much for BJU Pre-Alg. We did a couple levels of EPGY this year. He liked it enough but it was a supplement and we are dropping it. There were some quirks in the program and how to enter things that just drove him crazy. It worked out okay and he did well but there is no love lost there. Have you looked at Kinetic Books? The presentation seems appealing but I have not gone deeply into the content. He like the high tech stuff--that's what dad does. Cee Cee
  8. Wow. My post was not getting any comments so I did not check it for a few days. I was shocked! There is such a nice math conversation going on here. For my 9 year old who has completed thru BJU 6 as well as EPGY this year, I have picked up some great hints. I am now going to look at Kinetic Books, hands-on equations and AoPS. BJU 7 seems like it would be overkill. Saxon does not seem like the right program. Any specific insight on the programs I mentioned? As far as statistics, someone asked what we used. Well, One of my degrees is in statistics. I just used what I know. We went pretty deep for a 9 year old. Hoever, I cannot help with curriculum. Sorry. Again, great and helpful conversation. Thanks! 9. Country Girl, We have always used the BJU math levels. I am definitely comfortable with them and he does well. It does take some different thinking to pick a math for an advancing "younger" student. My ds is used to DVD classes. We have used many of the BJU classes that way. We do not use the math, though. It seems that science and grammar worked. Math did produce some blank looks. The classes were 30 minutes long and he zoned out. However, not the case with 30 minutes of science. Hmmm? So, I teach it to him. We both like math. I am looking for something that won't turn him off to math. I am not sure what that solution will be. I would not mind some quick 10-15 minute lessons which is why I was looking at Saxon. The chalkdust looks pretty straight-forward but I thought I read that the lessons were 20-40 minutes long. I also read that you could break them up, which might work. We have already paused when we could have moved forward. We have added in EPGY (not my favorite, though hew like it), LOF (again, he liked it but I did not see it adding anything) and a larger dose of statistics (one of my favorites). I want to go deeper, not quicker. However, he is ready to go forward at this point. I wish there was a math person who could simply analyze my situation and supply the perfect answer! Ha! I guess that will have to be me.
  10. Oh Elizabeth, Thanks for the information on the other texts. I have heard these names along the way but, honestly, have not checked them out. I suppose your reply serves as a good reminder to do so. I am not all that excited about using Saxon, I just know that there are many teaching options along the way with it. BJU has been wonderful and we have both enjoyed it. He seems to enjoy most things math related. I am going to research those texts over the next few days. Thanks for the kick to get started. Cee Cee
  11. Hi. We finshed BJU 6. He felt it was easy (97 average). We supplemented with EPGY. We have used BJU since 2nd grade level. I am picking math for next year. If we go with Saxon, I need to determine which level to use. He took the pretest today and it put him in 87, just barely missing Alg 1/2. I've done some reading and it seems that both are pre-alg books. Which one is better seems to be up for debate. If we use chalkdust, would I use the pre-alg level? Or, would basic math be the best fit? I am assuming pre-alg based on the Saxon pre-test. If we were to stay with BJU, I would definitely go with pre-alg but this is the only math I really know. We are used to mastery through BJU. My son is young. He is 9 and will be 10 when we start in the fall. He is excellent at math. We have never tried spiral so I am not sure how that would work. Does anyone have any input or experience with a similar circumstance? Thanks! Cee Cee
  12. Hi! We are enrolled. I have not been on here in a while. How do I get one? Cee Cee
  13. Hi. We are using the "group" program and working through EPGY for math. There is a language arts component that is also included. Would anyone care to tell me their impressions of this? Thanks! Cee Cee
  14. In Florida, there is the Florida Association of Christian Colleges and schools. It is called FACCS. They have a Junior Fine Arts Competition which includes a spelling bee. Homeschool students may enter. They have info online if you google FACCS and Junior Fine Arts Competition, it will show up. Cee Cee
  15. So, you can repeat a lesson? Also, when there is a section that they are missing problems...how do you know what to review? Is there a way to see the actual missed problems so that I know, for instance, to work on ratios or proportions? Do they ever show the solution or just tell them that the problem is incorrect? I really want to like this program. However, I want to know what he is missing if we need to instruct more on those areas. Also, how do we make the sessions longer than 20 minutes? I'd prefer 30 minutes. Cee Cee
  16. So, how do we adjust the grade level? Cee Cee
  17. I wasn't sure what to do, either. My ds was put in 4.5. However, he has already started 6th grade math via BJU. I figured the program would just jump right up as he would be getting all of his problems correct. However, he did a few sessions and he's been getting around 85% getting used to the program and entering numbers incorrectly (he just turned 9 this week). The problems will be fun for him. He likes anything math. However, if I do not see real teaching, meaning teaching with an explanation of the hows and whys...not just the computation explanation...I will definitely be disappointed. This is the program I am planning to use as our primary. I have no problem, however, teaching a small daily bit of math myself. Cee Cee
  18. I took the plunge and signed up for the EPGY group that was forming. We just started. I'm not sure what I think. My ds likes it. To me, it looks more like review. The actual teaching in the program seems so minimal. As review, I like it. As far as explanation of new concepts, the jury is out. Any new users have opinions? Cee Cee
  19. I am interested! I have interest for two of my children. Sorry...we've been out of town and I have not been reading. I really have always wanted to do this! Cee Cee l
  20. for all of your responses. I have learned quite a bit! Cee Cee
  21. There have been many responses that suggest Singapore. Would someone please, in a few sentences, tell me why I might want to choose Singapore. I chose BJU becasue my research told me that it was very much like Singapore, only with more practice and a more in depth TE. Cee Cee
  22. I have received so many responses so far. Thank you! I have started to look up each and every reference given. I'm still not sure what to do. My son intuitively understands math. I was considering TT just because ds thought it looked like fun. I was thinking if he was really enjoying it, then we must be doing the right thing. Now, I fear that may not be true. Perhaps I should use a more standard progam (like our current BJU) but add in some of the more challenging problems from Singapore or another reference. Perhaps I should switch to Singapore. Perhaps TT (fun for him) and Singapore I wish it were more clear cut. For those of you with extremely math-inclined children, what would you suggest? Blessings, Cee Cee
  23. Lorna, That's exactly my concern...just learning how to do math and not "why". BJU has done a great job with explaining the "hows" and "whys". However, the fit is not quite right, it seems. Thanks for the input. Cee Cee
