  1. How are these breaks scheduled? After 50 minutes? Trying to do simulated test taking practice session. Thanks.
  2. I'm in denial. I can't believe that I'm not just reading through this thread, I can actually post. My firstborn(out of only 2) ds 17 is applying this fall. He is a true liberal arts guy. He has always loved history and philosophy. At this point, I think he will be majoring in Political Theory instead of History. All his young life he said he wanted to be a history professor. He has decided to pursue a pre-law track. Eventually, attend law school. Sometime after that, he still thinks when he is older he can get a Ph.D. in History. For now, we are hoping to apply for early decision Nov. 1. We will be attending a Prospective Student Day in Oct. at the college he is interested in. He has already attended a couple of summer camps there. I have been to the campus before. We have friends attending.
  3. At my church, VBS counts because it is open to the community. Many parents from the community, who do not attend the church, take advantage of this free event. Not just church members serve. The teens bring their friends from public school to serve. The teachers or leaders working with the teens keep track of the hours. The church gives letters to all students on our letterhead for their community hours. If it counts for the public school student, it counts for the homeschooled. However, I can understand what Jenny is saying. I think it is strongly recommended to contact the department and make sure whatever activity your involved in will count.
  4. Have you posted on the Special Needs board? It is a program used for different issues regarding speech and auditory skills, etc.
  5. Have you read "When the Brain Can't Hear?" by Terri James Bellis
  6. Funny you should be looking for something like this. A friend of mine, who is also a homeschooling lawyer mom like myself, told me several years ago that we should do a DVD series on the Constitution for younger students---not highschoolers. I thought it was a great idea. We just haven't gotten to it. I know you are looking for DVDs but you might be interested in looking at this book: The Words We Live By, Your Annotated Guide to The Constitution, by Linda R. Monk, http://www.amazon.com/Words-Live-Annotated-Constitution-Stonesong/dp/078688620X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314816182&sr=8-1. HTH
  7. :iagree:My ds also took his Con Law class a couple of years ago.
  8. I pre-ordered the Constitutional Literacy Series. It will not ship until September. Therefore, I have not seen any episodes. I'm not sure this would be the type of program for an 8 year old. However, I have not seen the series.
  9. Regentrude, I have always read your posts and respected your opinions. Please let's not make this post about what it is not. I apologize that I'm the one not updated or the one misreading your post. Mike Smith is the president of HSLDA. Dr. Mike Farris is chancellor of PHC and HLSDA chairman. I don't keep up with all that he does. Regardless, that is not what this thread is about. We all have different ways of educating our children and different political views. I enjoy reading your posts about education. I printed out your dd's paper on the High School Writing Workshop as an example of good writing. I can accept that you do not agree with their political views. I just think that is not what the original poster was looking for. I'm not saying you can't speak your mind or express your views. There are plenty of threads or posts that are appropriate for that and have taken place before. Again, I apologize if I was mistaken about the actual title or office. If you do not share their political views, this would not be a program that you would consider.
  10. Dr. Farris is not the chairman of HSLDA. It is Mike Smith. Dr. Farris is a consitutional lawyer who has argued many cases before the Supreme Court. Obviously, if you do not have the same views as him, you would not consider this course. His regular Constitutional Law course is very good for high schoolers. Yes, I can certainly see that you would not agree with his personal views but the cases and court opinions are what they are. I am a lawyer and have had my ds take his high school course and ordered this series. Again, let's not turn this thread into another one about political differences or opinions. If you do not sympathize with HSLDA, please do not respond to the original poster.
  11. I would like to know about your experience with this workshop not Write At Home i general. Was the workshop beneficial? Did the coach give good feedback? Did it help your dc? Please share.
  12. Has your dc done this? http://www.memoriapress.com/onlineschool/fall11/seniorthesis.htm Do you know anyone who has? What is it like? Does the teacher give good feedback? Please share. Thanks.
  13. How about looking at some of the Extemporaneous resources by monument publishing? www.monumentpublishing.com. The Gold Book is used for background information on extemporaneous topics. It usually is a very good resource. Just reading through the articles can bring someone up to date.
  14. If it is a university that receives govt funding, the federal government issued a memo that they are not to treat homeschoolers differently. Again, I would contact HSLDA.
