  1. Since I last posted, I talked to ds about the livescribe. He says there was a young man at Mock Trial camp this past summer that had one and it is not as practical as one may think. You have to buy the specific notebooks for it. It was not as easy as a recorder to go back and forth on. You have to be placing it over the last word written where you want to hear what you missed---I don't know how to explaing this well but you can check it out at the website. Obviously, the student should ask the professor if he can tape the class. If he can, it doesn't hurt to do so. For us, we are going to pass on the livescribe at the request of ds. I will look for a digital recorder.
  2. Yes, that was something I was also considering. I was wondering if anyone had experience with it. Thanks for the link.
  3. Ds will be going away to college in the fall. I'm starting to plan for things to be purchased. If your ds or dd used a recorder to tape classes, which one do you recommend?
  4. Praying for you. Praying for wisdom for doctors, healing, and peace.:grouphug:
  5. :hurray: Congratulations to you and your children. I'm happy for you.
  6. Not a class but a program that a friend of ours used are really liked it. She had scored really well and wanted to do even better. She used the program for the second try. She got close to perfect score. www.knewton.com
  7. I'm so sorry. I've been on and off the boards. I had been praying for her. Will continue to pray for her and your family. :grouphug:
  8. Some of these products have choice of book or CD for same price. Which one have you used? Is it better to get CD or book?
  9. If you do, you should have him submit an essay for the scholarship.
  10. So did we. Paid off all my law school loans within 5 years.
  11. Regentrude, creekland, choirfarm and all others whose children have performed exceedingly well on this test. I thought the science videos said to read all the information before looking at the questions. I know time is of the essence on this test. My ds has a friend who did very well and he said that on the science portion he looked at the question first and then went to the passage. Your words of wisdom please. Thanks.
  12. We used PA Homeschoolers. We didn't do dual enrollment for various reasons. I believe my ds was getting a better education through online providers, etc. than our local dual enrollment. However, NCFCA tournaments was another consideration. Some families only do dual enrollment in the fall. I know many NCFCA families whose children have excelled at NCFCA and participated in all tournaments and are graduating with AA through dual enrollment. I guess they just planned it well. The issue with Potter School is that some of their classes require the student to be present and only allow for so many absences. You just need to look into it with professor.
  13. :iagree:They don't just teach to the test. The overall learning experience was truly outstanding. That is the feedback from every student I have known who has taken any of those classes. My ds's experience in APUSH with Susan Richman was so much more than the AP test. At the same time, their performance on the AP tests has been excellent.
  14. Ds has already been accepted to school of choice. It really bothers me that top colleges accept homeschool transcripts and yet our local state university questions them. He is not attending said university; however, I don't know if that would be the sentiment of local community offering this scholarship. I don't know if to adjust his transcript for purposes of a local scholarship. It's only a one time $1,000. A friend whose dd was a receipient of said scholarship last year included the following on her transcript and had it signed by a teacher. "This certifies that the information contained in this transcript for ___student name____is an accurate representation of the courses she has taken and the grades she has received." ____________ teacher name and # Would you do this?
  15. If the school requires you send all the scores, the SAT will send all scores including subject tests. Some schools require you send all scores even though they use the highest score from each section to make their decision. Some schools allow you to use score choice. When sending scores, the collegeboard is programmed based on the school. If you select all scores, it includes the subject tests. At least, it did for me today. I thought there was a way to only choose SAT scores even if it is all scores. I didn't see it. You should look into it. Otherwise, just stick to the ACT.
  16. For those who have participated in 4-H, do you count meeting hours for County Council and District (not club meetings) as part of service hours? I only counted the actual events where they were out in the community. However, at one point I googled 4h and came across some 4-H info that made it seem as if the meetings were community service hours. My ds was president of the county council--as such he presided over the 4H County Council meetigs and he was chaplain for the 4H District. I did not include the monthly meetings for council and for District in community service hours. Now, applying for scholarships it seems people tend to count a lot of things. Would you count mentoring/coaching debate not for a specific club and w/o pay as community service? I had not counted it as community service hours--others have counted tutoring as community service hours.
  17. Thanks for your replies. The reason I asked was because the ACT website was not specific. I assumed that since it wasn't listed that it was permitted but I wanted to confirm that. I googled the question and on College Confidential it said it was fine. I was also asking because on the ACT prep book it said it was better to use a graphing calculator. I know for the SAT an uncomplicated calculator was recommended. Thanks for your advice.
  18. Is a graphing calculator better? If so, is a TI 83 Plus fine?
  19. Thanks Kareni. I was thinking of that because I have your packet of application materials which were very helpful. I knew you did not give the 1 credit for dual enrollment that I know people do. Now I understand why. That is actually what I asked her. They were full semester courses at USF.
