  1. After my first two dc I decided to wait to start spelling until third grade for my youngest. It was confusing and frustrating and I didn't really see retention before that. Now my olders are zipping along with much less angst. So there is one anecdotal reassurance that you could actually just drop it for a bit.
  2. Miss Tick

    ...

I would do this weekend's trip. Then I would back out, trying not to burn bridges with the radio people. In the New year, you and your kids can work up the most awesome kid-radio program ever to conveniently fill in the open time slot that will be left when this group flakes out or starts garnering fines from the FCC.
  3. Hugs. So sorry you have to deal with this.
  4. You should let it go because correcting her is way more likely to cause you problems than leaving her ignorance unchecked. If you want, you could compose an inspection of the inspection process. Don't send it though! This falls in the category of "you can't argue with crazy."
  5. Yes. In August it is usually 50% off. I think there may be a spring sale also? The discount depends on the number of orders, so I suppose it might not get to 50.
  6. Dodsworth in (various major cities) Underpants on My Head Commander Toad books Fox and His Friends All these have multiple books.
  7. I don't think OP was objecting to fund-raising costs, just pointing out that there is generally a significantly higher administrative cost when a third party is used to cold call trying to raise money. If you truly want to support a charity, find a way to give more directly, mail to them, website, you call the charity, whatever cuts it the middle-man.
  8. I remember the last book of Series of Unfortunate Events having some heavy relationship content, although I don't remember romance, per se. We are reading Percy Jackson number 1 right now and there is teen awkwardness and passing references to relationships between the gods, but so far, no romance. I couldn't get through How to Train, but the movie was romance-free, as I recall. Sorry I can't be of more help!
  9. Maybe I'm not picky enough for you, but I don't get any complaints about previously-frozen potato soup (with milk). I also do split pea and carrot.
  10. I got called out at an airport once. She said it was because they were all listening so attentively to a read-aloud.
  11. Don't feel too bad for the wastewater treatment plant guys, on the tour I was on they mentioned pulling money and even a diamond ring out of the strainers. Apparently his SO was ok with that. I agree that I was feeling totally shamed by not knowing this before now. I'll be sure to pass this knowledge on to the next generation.
  12. Gah. Add that phrase to the long list of involuntarily twitch-causing mannerisms. "I seen you had a chester drawers for sell () a mirror on top?"
  13. No "Wii-ing" in the house! If he doesn't use the other two, could you guide him through selling them and using the money for the Wii? Takes it off your list of things to deal with then. I don't feel like you really have to address not getting it for him head-on, either. Just a noncommittal,"hmmm, anything else?" Pass the bean dip, please. Now, weekday to get him instead...
  14. Sounds like a job for.. Pinterest! Air plants in some kind of case you personalize (they are often magnets, or window suction cups I think) Other homemade magnets? Dish towels with the family names? I'm thinking fabric markers for ease and speed.
  15. BFSU has that lesson in its first book (and then revisits in book 3). In addition to Slache's dh's idea, put a little tape on the map to represent your dd, and another one for somebody far from you. Then you can introduce time zones, and why we don't call grandma's before breakfast! This is a great way to set her intuitive feel for which way the earth rotates. This would also be a good lead-in to measuring solar noon in your area, and discussion, or measurement about why the Latin for sunrise and Sunday change over the year. I think you should buy BFSU. It is cheap and dense and not very user friendly, but it will help her answer these questions and help both of you tie them together with other science topics.
  16. The penguin is the evil bad guy from Wallace & Grommit "I've got the wrong trousers, Grommit! And they've gone all wrong!"
  17. We recently read Liesel and Po, I personally didn't love it, although my kids liked it. The Wolves in the Walls is another Gaiman book she might like. The Seven Tales of Trinket might work. Check out any of the illustrated books by Shaun Tan. Very quirky, often dark in tone. I love The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers, but I feel like I may be drifting too far from your initial request.
  18. Your post reminds me of what 8Filltheheart used to say about her dd, she was good at math, but her passion lay with languages, so she did not do AOPS and instead did ... I don't remember. (Pouty face here) You could pm her or try your luck at a Google search on this site with her tag and algebra. Good luck!
  19. So, the students who answered incorrectly all the same way share a bio section and you think perhaps the teacher there was "helping" with homework? I would consider bringing in all the students, sitting them down and saying "your work is remarkably similar" silence "you all made the same error(s)" silence then whatever appropriate warning? You are ask doomed to a future o involving French fries! Or, however you usually dismiss. DH says also check the Wikipedia page. Sometimes that is where the erroneous information starts.
  20. Not just that, but it is a BOLD note. I'd like to think my vision is ok, but I am so often the victim of autocorrect and poor proofreading that I will be right there with you in the "edited posts hall of fame". Plus, on my phone I have to edit my pay in order for the "follow this topic?" button to show up.
  21. Doesn't have to be one or the other. Why not ease in BA one or two days a week?
  22. 4th and now in 5th. Stay the course! I think the WWE4 instructions shift to that maybe mid-year. We never wrote SOTW narrations (I know, shocking rule-breaker, aren't I) So if you are feeling overwhelmed that might be an area to cut. Now in 5th I assign them some reading and occasional written narrations on their own.
