  1. Or the one about procrastination (funny, but not terribly instructional) https://youtu.be/arj7oStGLkU?si=IO0PpsXNnEmyFLqA I hear you about the frustration of inefficiency. I do think you need to give him some room to be in charge, however you can also put down your own boundaries - family things that he needs to attend, and behaviors that aren't acceptable. Now is when he starts learning to be a good roommate, another skill that will be useful in his future
  2. Can ya'll help me revise my makeup policy? Cosmetics should be worn at the users discretion, but thoroughly removed every night before bed to avoid staining the pillowcases.
  3. He is getting straight A's, so is the issue that you are wanting him to be more efficient with his time? At about this age I had to really back off and let my teens own their work. I started using phrases like, "You are clearly doing what needs to be done. Have you thought about (whatever is on my mind)?" and then I had to let it go. One of mine was still interested in sitting down Fridays and strategizing work for the weekend. The other was not. If he is doing well, and it sounds like he is, I would try backing off. If his grades start to slip, ask for his thoughts, maybe make a change at that point if needed. It can be hard to let go, but it is a good time to ease back. "You're grades show me that you are handling your school load well. Using that as a measure, I'm going to work on backing off. I find it hard to do, thanks for your patience with me."
  4. Hi, Melissa! I'm glad to see you. I finished a hat that my dd requested. It fits well (lucky, since I didn't do a gauge swatch), and the pattern was the perfect level of interesting but not difficult - good for read aloud audiobook time in the evenings.
  5. Following along since I have all that and physics, too. My last dc who took chemistry was able (with lots of prodding) to find everything they needed on the shelf! I don't know anyone in my area who is homeschooling.
  6. DH got a reminder from one of the big rental car companies last time. Also a postcard from the state, but the rental car email was funny.
  7. Oh, the fickle, fickle winds. Hopefully Aeolus looks your way tomorrow.
  8. I forgot to mention that there happens to be a Stephen King book that he apparently wrote for younger readers (The Eye of the Dragon), but I haven't read it yet, and I think it is fantasy rather than horror. You might offhandedly mention that if she *does* ever pick up a Stephen King book, it is very, very, (very!) important to accept that stopping in the middle of the chapter, when the action is calm, is the way. to. go.
  9. What Moves the Dead, by T. Kingfisher, is a retelling of Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. I didn't recall ever reading The Fall, but I recently read What Moves and I find it very, classically creepy! It is not a short story, but it is a novela, so not much longer. If she particularly wants a short story you might look at Roald Dahl's "The Landlady" It was creepy, but I classified it as "middle school creepy". Implied, but not explicit. It was difficult finding appropriate short stories for my middle school short story class!
  10. All 3 of my dc had teeth removed a year ago. The dentist referred them to oral surgeons and sent the surgeon X-rays. We showed up day of procedure and I waited in the lobby. We picked up the scrip on the way home, but none of them needed it. The only follow up was a phone call from the office the next morning. Do actually weigh your child. I guessed on the first and that may be why her anaesthesia seemed to take longer to wear off than the others.
  11. If I had the time I might make a few appointments with people - advisor, president, people in between and show them what you are telling us, ask if this should be considered representative of the school, ask for your money back in lieu of returning your students time. Basically raise a polite stink.
  12. It was pretty clear on their webpage. We were wondering if it would affect us, but it didn't really. I think at a small Speedway like this fireworks are a pretty regular occurrence.
  13. I had a spreadsheet from another boardie that rejiggered Human Odyssey sections to line up with SoTW. Although I wouldn't bother with that rearranging if you aren't trying to coordinate read aloud or discussions with a younger student going through SoTW. After they did that we used SWB's History of ___ series for high school. None of my students wanted to focus on history or do much outside reading related to history, so this was my approach to checking if the box.
  14. The Speedway near where I stayed in central Ohio had them. Perhaps to give people that paid a $10 entrance fee their money's worth. Somebody had thought about it, though, and started them after the first 2 minutes of totality. We were a mile or so away and could hear them, but they were blocked by a neighboring house.
  15. Dd and I still giggle about the time I got in trouble with her because her weekend was too busy and she wasn't bored enough to really enjoy it.
  16. My understanding is that a bar is added under the vehicle to increase structural integrity. That's why Uhaul is an option. Last summer the dealership didn't have the trim package we wanted, but then 2 months later they let us know they were getting one against all odds and we could reserve it with no financial risk.
  17. Yes, bad language as the incredulity arises, but nice explanation of how we got here. And hilarious. ETA: I was so sure this was going to explain where the plastic "American" cheese in single serving plastic wrappers came from. Butt nothing specific beyond an offhand mention of Kraft Corp
  18. I like giving board book versions of classics like Moby Dick or Jane Eyre in the belief that friendship arises from familiarity. If the parents have stem backgrounds you could look at books from the Scientific ABC's
  19. How nice that everyone is willing to defer to you to decide, then. It makes it easier - no second guessing on their part or justification needed on your part, but then deciding what is fair falls all on you.
  20. Following along since I have 2 similar situations coming up in the next few months. I've paid for it up front and people, correctly, want to know what their share is. Tricky
  21. Dd is approaching the end of 9th grade. Her class is called Honors World History. We think there will have been 4 1,000 word papers with sources Yes, reading - many, but not all chapters from the text and a few outside articles. Yes, quizzes and apparently I'm wrong in my assumption that they are just to help fill out the grade book. They really do help them learn the material ("Mom! 🙄") No projects, but some presentations - ancient African civilizations and a historical character selected from a list of possibilities. These have been group projects. I suppose there is still time in the year for another project SWB acolyte that I am, I've been a bit sad to see all of history of the world zoom by in one year, but she has definitely benefited from the 2 cycles we did at home.
