  1. For AHL, my son spends between 1 -1 1/2 hours per day. This does not include the writing portion, because he is taking an outside writing class. Deanna
  2. My son is 14 (9th grade) and he is taking his first outside math class. I have been reviewing his homework, and he understands the math, but he makes lots of careless mistakes. Is there anything that I can do to help him with this? Is there a chance that he will outgrow this? Thanks, Deanna
  3. My son is in 9th grade and taking Algebra 2. I am thinking about using his 10th grade year to review Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 to make sure that his foundation for higer math is solid. My question is has anyone else done this? If so, what curriculum did you use? If you haven't done this, but you have a suggestion, I would love to hear it. Thanks, Deanna
  4. I purchased the Teaching Company World History DVDs. Here is a link to show what is included: http://www.teach12.com/ttcx/coursedesclong2.aspx?cid=131 I was able to purchase a used copy through someone on the swap board for around $60
  5. My son will be using AHL this fall. I also bought Spielvogel Human Odyssey and the Teaching Co. World History DVDs to supplement. I am particularly excited about reading through the Old Testament and discussing it with my son. Deanna
  6. I bought some used. Can I still upgrade or do they only upgrade for the original purchaser? Thanks, Deanna
  7. For me, two books that were keys to my changing to veganism are Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman and The China Study by T. Colin Campbell. Deanna
  8. The Dive DVDs are short and there is not a lot of info on them. Most of the lectures are only 10 -20 minutes and for most chapters there is only 1 lecture, which does not cover all of the subject matter. I did not follow the Dive syllabus, I just had my son read the entire chapter and watch the DVDs to gain a little more info. My opinion is that the material given in the chapters is at a level that requires a teacher to get the most out of it. My son is learning, but not at the depth I would like. I am having him take the tests, but I allow him to use the book - in other words an open book test. Last year we used the new Life Science book and that went great. He loved it, but the material was not as in depth as it is in Physical Science. Deanna
  9. My son is using BJU Physical Science this year with Dive Cds. I think that it is an in depth and rigorous program. I chose to use the newest edition and the BJU DVDs use the last edition. The Dive cd is ok, but I really wish that I had gone with the BJU DVDs and the older edition. I have included links for the table of contents for the Apologia and BJU Physical Science books. BJU only covers Physics and Chemistry in the Physical Science Book. http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product_slideshow?sku=336402&actual_sku=336402&slide=1 http://www.bjupress.com/product/233171?path=128907&samplePage=#lookInside I hope this helps. Deanna
  10. I am planning for my son to do Biology next year (he will be in 9th grade). I was planning on him using BJU with the DVDs, however, I am having second thoughts. These doubts are mostly due to the time required (45 minute lecture plus reading and work). Does it really take 45 min every day to listen to the lecture? Is it all important info? What about using Divd Cds? I assume that these don't take as long to listen to. What I would really like is to be able to accomplish everything within about 1 hour per day. Is this doable? Thanks, Deanna
  11. Try fatfreevegan.com for recipes. I also have several recipes that I can email you if you are interested. Here is an example: SPICY JASMINE RICE WITH CARROTS AND CASHEWS 2 TBSP. Olive Oil 1 small red onion, finely chopped 1 jalapeno, seeded and minced 1 large carrot, grated 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 Tbsp. peeled and grated fresh ginger 2 tbsp. soy sauce (I use Bragg's Amino Acids) 1/2 tsp. honey 3 cups cold cooked brown rice 1 1/2 cups thawed sweet peas 1/2-3/4 cup chopped unsalted cashews 1. Heat the oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the onion and jalapeno and stir fry until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the carrot, garlic, ginger, and scallions and stir fry until soft, about 2 minutes. 2. Add the soy sauce, honey and rive and stir-fry until the ingredients are blended and the rice is heated through, about 10 minutes. 3. To serve, place the rice in a shallow bowl, sprinkle with the chopped cashews, and serve immediately. I serve this with gingered carrots, which is sliced carrots, fresh ginger and apple juice concentrate simmered for about 30 minutes. This is one of my husband's favorites. Deanna
  12. I am using the Lightbearers curriculum with my 8th grade son and one of his 9th grade friends this year. It is a fantastic program. My son and I have learned so much and had some great conversations about worldview as a result of this program. In fact, my son was able to have a very intelligent conversation with his grandparents (who do believe in evolution) about evolution and creation as a result of this curriculum. He gave them many things to think about that they had not considered before. The only thing that I have been at all concerned about is the mature content that is sometimes discussed. The dvds that you watch are excellent, but it is obvious from the audience that the material was originally meant for upper high school and college students. You may want to review the material and dvds first. I decided to go ahead with the material, and I don't regret it. There is a high school curriculum called Understanding the Times that is produced by Summitt Ministries that we will also use. If you have any other questions, let me know. Deanna
  13. I use a fan to help drown out the noise when we go on trips. At home, he does sleep in another room. Since this doesn't sound possible for you, would it be possible to have 2 separate beds in your room? When we stay in a hotel, I always ask for 2 doubles rather than 1 king. Then I put the fan in between us. Sometimes I have to use earplugs too. Deanna
  14. My brother has taken it on a few different occasions with success as far as smoking is concerned. However, it caused problems with his behavior and mood. It was bad enough that his wife had to ask him to quit taking it. Deanna
  15. Check out this book from Answers in Genesis (Evolution Exposed): http://www.answersingenesis.org/articles/am/v2/n3/biology-101-dissecting-todays-textbook I am planning to buy it next year when my son studies biology. It identifies the the evolutionary content used in America’s major biology textbooks and then provides the creationist view in each instance. I hope this is helpful. Deanna
