About GeekyMom

  1. My daughter is going to take iPhone development this year at hscompsci. Last year she took AP Computer Science. She seemed to like it so we added iPhone app programming. We got her an iPad and she loves it! I'm hoping that she can make an app and get rich.... or at least have some fun.:)
  2. I feel the same way! My daughter took a online class last year in AP Computer Science at HSCompsci.com. Her regular high school only offered microsoft powerpoint as the highest level of computers. We were a bit fearful as my husband and I have no clue how to program computers. But she did fine and scored a 5 (which is the highest score) on the AP test. What's important for me is that my daughter can reach the instructor by phone -- not just by email. She now wants to take a robotics class so we are looking at other schools.
  3. Well, my daughter experimented with Alice. Initially she loved it, but then I noticed she stopped doing the more complicated exercises. I've seen a couple of online courses. One is at expert training and another one is at high school computer science online. I'm interested if anyone has heard about these. With all of the movies like Toy Story 3 and 3D seems big these days -- it would be nice to have a class geared towards younger students.
  4. Arggg, I can't get my profile picture to upload...
  5. I'm trying to edit my profile and put my photo on... but it says NO IMAGE UPLOADED....
  6. What is the difference between a profile picture and an avatar?
  7. I've had my children take two online classes last year. One from the PA Homeschoolers and one from HS Computer Science. My daughter took AP Computer Science and had a great time (She just took the AP Computer science exam yesterday!) The instructors used this neat graphics way of teaching and were available by phone if necessary. My son took the SAT Essay writing classes from PA Homeschoolers and mostly used the forums for discussing assignments. He could complete essays online and get feedback. The hs compsci class had online live web classes where you could see the instructors screen on your own computer. Honestly, my daughter made probably 30% of the "live" sessions due to scheduling conflicts, but the videos could always be downloaded later. We are going to enroll in the 3D animation class this year. 8. Speaking only for AP Computer Science, my daughter took Algebra I and some basic "how to build a website" type courses before going into APCS. She took it online and did pretty well. The instructor was really responsive and emailed back within hours of her questions. I'm sure it would have been more difficult if she had not taken some kind of computer class. But the APCS course assumes you've never coded before. She took this class, but there are quite a few if you google them.
  9. Last year my daughter took an online class in advanced placement computer science from here: http://course.hscompsci.com last year. What's nice is that since she took the AP Test, she used that to get out of her gen. ed. computer class at the community college in Pasadena. What was interesting was the instructors approach. They did graphics from day one, and my daughter is a very visual student. That being said, I do not recommend this class for someone with low computing skills, as it is a college level class.
