  1. Daddy had 7.5 yo at it right now. we decided last night would be too much (late) for DS. I am hoping at least DS has a good time
  2. i just ordered -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0769681212/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 -- for Big Brother and when we travel home in July he is going to take the CAT for first grade ...just for momma's benefit so i can see how he is going. I am doing it in July so my BFF can administer it to him. i think he will take it more serious if someone other than momma is there. we only have 3 weeks till we move and i don't want to rush it. we technically school first grade until the end of June anyway, doing it when we are home in July lets us practice testing (the only testing he has ever done has been with PhD for IQ testing) and i don't want him to mess up because of the format.
  3. he has never done a "fill in the bubble test" anyone know anything about this book http://www.amazon.com/Test-Prep-Grade-1-Spectrum/dp/0769681212/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1367369809&sr=1-5&keywords=test+prep i don't want him to do badly because of the test format
  4. about the CAT can i give it to him, (actually i think BFF will do it so i am not there, i think he will work harder for "not the momma" all the website says is: and
  5. thanks ladies, i may look into doing the CAT at home -- are the scores pretty straight foward? i remember taking it every year in school but don't remember the scores
  6. we are living outside our registered school district because DH is on detail. so i don't think i can use my local school as a resource for this. if we were not in travle status i would ask them (had / have a good working relationship with them)
  7. I really want to do end of the year testing with my 7.5 yo first grader -- math and reading / phonics would be enough -- to see if he is at or below grade level. just i am worried and curious. I liked the idea of him doing it with someone other than me. I thought of Sylvan but i am not sure they actually do THAT (that is test for grade level or if they only look for weakness and stuff they can sell tutoring for) and I don't know if they are honest, or if they always find a problem. we have problems i know that, but that is not my point -- i want to see where he falls compared to peers. thoughts? suggestions?
  8. anyone have any suggestion for me -- i am not finding anything. I can't find the yahoo group you refer to. :(
  9. anyone have any suggestion for me -- i am not finding anything
  10. no i don't plan to buy them all, some of them yes. i hope that we will be able the get a good selection for our lib once we move. that eill allow us book access for most of our round trips.
  11. i really want to repeat the material of books 3 and 3.5 -- but i am not sure how to do it --
  12. do you have a link, i could not find it :)
  13. the title pretty much says it all. Big Brother (7.5, first grade) is about done with ETC 3.5 and i just don't feel he is read for book 4. He is good with silent `e' at the end of the word makes the first vowel say its name; but he doesn't seem to remember it without prmpting. The second half starts on vowel digraphs, e.g. `ee', `ea', and i really do not feel he is down pat with them. I know book 4 moves on to things like ending (-ness and so on) and i feel bee needs more of a strong "use" of where we are now. anyone know how other phonic work books (like plaid phonics for example) "match up" with ETC -- I am not sure which book to buy I want to do some on at least vowel digraphs before we move on. ???
  14. a great book -- look at your lib or ask them to request it ILL -- http://www.amazon.com/Home-Schooling-Historical-Practical-Perspective/dp/0805425853/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367189795&sr=8-1&keywords=home+schooling+the+right+choice .......he debunks the "salt and light argument" as well as builds a very Bibical reason why parents should personally educate their children. It is an older book, but it is good Home Schooling: The Right Choice: An Academic, Historical, Practical, and Legal Perspective Christopher J. Klicka
  15. thanks again everyone. int he next 12 months we are going to drive 24 hours (at least ) 6x (at least) so we have tons of time for great audio books
  16. i am feeling better. I think maybe it is just his age / ability level and maybe things will change in the next year or two ..... it makes me feel a lot better to hear all the BTDT stories of kids disliking reading, then finally loving it
  17. i think you are all right, DS1 just doesn't have the skills yet to love it. (I do, though, wish he lusted after the skills, rather than me putting it out there -- i remember wanting to learn to read, wanting to be able to read, he doesn't care)
