  1. subbing to come back later -- i am addicted to read-a-loud lists and discussions
  2. i want to add writing / composition to our load. not making him write creatively; but teaching him to write well. This year we did FLL 1 and we will do FLL 2 in the fall. so I was "looking inside" WWE on amazon. copy work, and short reading passages to narrate back. Well FLL has both of those things. I am not trying to be difficult I am just wondering what the differences are -- how much of it "is the same" and how much is different. do they go together well? or do they double up on stuff? thoughts on useing both? Wed be in FL 2 but for WWE we'd be on level 1
  3. thanks. WWE -- via copy work, teaching composition? (ie being able to write a good sentence, or a good 3 or 4 sentence "paragraph" and so on?) so is 2nd too young to teach that -- i don't want to push creative writing on him -- but i want him to have a good foundation and don't wait to wait too late. And yes i assume writing will also be penmanship practice too -- i won't make him do it 2x)
  4. no, not handwriting i mean learning to write -- like a 3 sentence story with a start and end, or whatever. i really don't know what i need to be teaching writing, composition is a better word maybe? doing American History is place of Social Studies (DH request)
  5. thanks everyone -- we will stick with MM for another year :)
  6. I am really clueless about teaching writing I have a 2nd grader this fall (and a kindy, but i am talking about the 2nd grader). I don't know what i should be teaching, or how. We have worked on nothing but handwriting up to this point (and he struggles with that as it is). I know i should be doing more, but i am not sure WHAT or HOW
  7. planning for fall here are my notes 2nd grade, kindy and "together" I think i have everything covered -- subject wise -- let me know if you see anything i am missing. for a few i have have the subject listed but i haven't made a choice yet -- but i know i want something... 8. so what do the dvds teach you? what do you -- as teacher -- have to learn. can you give me examples?
  9. i have been trying to read about CC all morning -- but the information is all reactionary (on both sides) and I can't get a clear picture i did find this i don't know on one hand i think "standards" "across the US" would be a good thing, but on the other hand i do not advocate teh Fed Gov trying to control education in any way I also worry that common standards are going to be made easier to cover everyone, rather than stronger i just don't know what we should be doing.
  10. i guess because i panicked? Maybe we don't need to change. i am just all confused
  11. we are doing first grade MM this year, the grade level, not the "by topic". I am concerned about MM being aligned with Common Core and that THAT might "be watering down the math" I am thinking of switching math but i fear moving to another "program" now and missing something in the change. ie that some other math program, in 2nd grade, might assume that the student did something in first that we did not do. Also i have NO IDEA where to go -- we like MM because it is all work book based -- (and not $$) help?
  12. thanks i can't wait to look at it -- it looks like a lot of teacher training is needed -- yes?
  13. I am wondering if anyone else has taught spelling by pulling words from ETC then used the list to do a traditional "weekly spelling list / test" with the list you created from ETC. I am thinking of doing this for the fall for spelling -- and useing something like http://www.spellingcity.com to make up the activities for the week. Wondering if anyone has done this before -- Wondering if it is a bad idea or... or does anyone know a place to find word lists -- by spelling / phonic rule? I can make the activities up myself (on spelling city) but i need a set of lists based on phonics / spelling rule. i hate to try to make them on my own, i fear missing something.
