  1. Hey if you have a 3rd grader, could you come over and vote on this poll about how much writing your dc does on their own? http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2535573#post2535573
  2. Agreeing with Robyn, SOTW for grammar stage and MOH for logic stage, at least that's our plan :).
  3. Yes, we are using WWE3, but I kinda panicked when I saw that a third grader was writing their own narrations. Tara, i like your idea, I may try having her write one on her own and see how it goes. I'm just afraid that she'll freeze because she has to do it all. Gonna have to mull that one over a bit... Crimson Wife, I love Charlotte Mason right about now :tongue_smilie:.
  4. I'm curious, as I was re-reading TWTM tonight to see if we are on track, I noticed that she has a 3rd grader writing all on their own. :001_huh: We are not there yet. Dd still struggles with taking two sentences from dictation and her spelling, well let's not go there. I realize that these two are linked and her spelling issues mainly result from my failure to continue phonics after she was reading. We are working on the phonics using WRTR and the dictation skills using WWE, but I'd really like to know how many 3rd graders are doing all their own writing (for narrations)? Right now, dd copies some of her narrations and takes some from dictation. Are we really that far behind? It's ok if we are, I can handle the truth, I think...
  5. Oh, how I wish this thread was around two years ago and I had read it then. I learned the hard way how important it is to stick with phonics, even after they are reading, and that there is purpose in having your child answer in complete sentences. We are a bit behind in the LA department because of it, but I'm encouraged by this thread to keep working on the progression of skills, we'll get there. Thanks again!
  6. It's all on my shelf right now, calling to me... Bible: Grapevine's NT Survey Math: Singapore & Life of Fred: Fractions Language Arts: FLL4, WWE4, WRTR for spelling Literature: CHOLL Modern along with selected read-alouds History: SOTW4 w/ the AG Science: Physics for the Grammar Stage Latin: Latin Christian I Electives: Chinese, Feed My Sheep Art, maybe some piano lessons and ballet if all goes well :) Seems like a lot when I type it all out, hopefully ds will let us get it all done :D.
  7. Maybe something from Queen's Homeschool? I think they have a series called Language Lessons that integrates all aspects of LA including spelling. You may also want to check out Primary Language Lessons or some of the older English books on Google Books. Hope that helps!
  8. We did get bogged down in the infamous noun section and I searched for greener grass, but we are back to FLL and loving it. The repetition has purpose and I know that for the rest of my dd's life, she will know what a noun is :).
  9. Thanks Kimmie, this is why I keep at this :).
  10. No worries folk, I'm am a self-professed science geek, so I know that grammar errors can and will occur, which is why I no longer edit our programs. I have several very gracious people around me who are helping me out with the editing process as we can't afford to hire a professional editor and still keep our prices low. Jennifer (and anyone else), if you email me directly an errors you find, I'd appreciate it as I keep a running tab and correct them in the next edition. Oh, and you'll be pleased to know that we now have a professional artist who will be doing our all pictures from now on :).
  11. I've read the whole thing and it's very interesting. The author does a good job of relaying scientific info within the context of a story. As for my dd, she hated it when I tried to read it to her in first grade, said it was boring, but when we used several passage for WWE3 style writing last week, she was clamoring for more :).
  12. 2009, 2004, 1999 I have all three and my favorites are the 2009 and 1999 editions. 2009 has much better logic/rhetoric explanations so I would recommend that if your students are that age. 1999 does a better job at explaining the philosophy without all the use xyz curriculum to do this. Actually it's really nice to have all three, so that's my recommendation :D.
  13. Completely agree with this! My dd is learning Mandarin through a native-speaking tutor, but only because we live here and have to know the language. It's a tough first language and I wouldn't teach it unless you have routine access to a native speaker.
  14. FLL3 here and it takes us 10-15 minutes, depending on how much writing dd has to do :).
  15. Robyn, Here's a few options you have from my point of view... Let your ds do Bio Logic while the youngers do Physics Grammar, then let all of them do the Physics unit projects together, that way ds would get a bit of physics but still be doing science on his level. The other option would be to do Physics for the Grammar Stage with everyone. I'm getting ready to (once Bio Logic is out the door) update Physics to add a 2-day schedule and some professional artist pictures. I'm also taking a look at making it more of a transitional year, so that the gap between our grammar stage and logic stage programs isn't so huge. My concern with this option is that it may not be ready in time for you. I'm hoping to have it out this summer, but I've got several other things on the plate, so we shall see. The final option would be to have everyone doing Bio Logic (there will be a reading schedule for the younger). My concern with this would be that most of your crew is younger and it may go over some of their heads, especially for your ds 7 & 5, but this may be a problem for them with Physics as well. Hope that helps you make a decision!
  16. I haven't found SOTW3 to have more mature material than the other volumes, but the chapters are longer, so you may find that the younger's attention span will wander before you finish the chapter.
  17. I'm not letting my dd write in them, but I have 1-6. We do all the CWP problems on the white board together. If I only had 2 & 3 I would probably let her write in them because your going to have to get the new version for 4-6 anyway.
  18. Thanks Heather, I actually live in China, close but we didn't feel a thing. Our thoughts are definitely with those who did.
  19. FWIW, I'm not thrilled with it either. I just couldn't find a better, in print substitute. Maybe one of these days I'll write my own ;). Until then, I'm subbing in to see if someone else knows of a gem I haven't found yet.
  20. If you want to go with the 4 year cycle, go with SOTW. If you don't care, then either one is fine. I personally prefer SOTW and the AG for that age because of the more hands on approach.
  21. I love everything we are using right now, but the ones I have sold/resold/dropped/picked up again and am now totally enamored with because I see how the process works... First Language Lessons Writing with Ease I should know by now to trust SWB in her area of expertise :).
  22. We've been enjoying Prima Latina, it's a very gentle introduction to Latin and it's easy to teach for this non-Latin knowing mom. The only thing is that it might be a bit basic for your 4th grader. Have you tried showing him the samples of the various curricula you are looking at? If I can't decide I narrow it down to two choices, then show them to my dd for the final decision, that way she takes a bit of ownership in the process :).
