  1. I hate this type of passive aggressive bull ****. Just tell the kids what you expect of them. ETA- Hey, I didn't know we couldn't write the "s" word in this forum- it starred it out for me. Hehehe!
  2. Is he from Eastern Europe? If so, it might be in your dd's best interest to take your dh with you to a meeting. If that's not possible, mention how you're sorry to bother him again, you just don't understand... he's such a great coach! But you want to understand (and it's difficult, because you're not an athlete and you're a poor woman, blah blah blah. Don't actually say that, just give that impression.) This might work with an American coach also, especially if he has a Napoleon complex. I know some fantastic Eastern European men who coach gymnastics, and I know some real pieces of work. The latter tend to be rather misogynistic. (Good thing they're working with our daughters, huh?) Good luck!
  3. First of all, let me say that I am a gymnastics coach, and I think it's ridiculous that the coach: 1. Is holding a grudge for that long against a child. He needs to grow up. 2. Won't tell the child exactly what she needs to do to get her privileges back. 3. Actually believes that your dd was the only child playing with the lockers and slamming doors. (The lesson the other girls learned from this experience is that lying pays off.) Is the head coach also the owner or manager? I would request a private meeting with the head coach to discuss how dd can get her locker back, since it's been 4 months. If you don't get a response, or get a negative response, try to get a meeting with the coach's boss. Don't be accusatory, just ask for the information so you know when/if your dd can get a locker. With this type of coach, I would build up his ego a bit. Be glad you are moving in 1.5 years!
  4. I agree with the woman in the article. I had a (late) friend who was irritated by all the Pinktober articles in the local newspaper- all the focus on survivors was a little depressing for her, as a stage 4. We would joke about it- why not do an article on her- how she was living with the disease? The news makes people who don't know better think all cancers can be cured, you just have to fight it! Keep a positive attitude! It kind of makes people who lose the battle feel like, well, losers. My late dh was diagnosed as stage 4 in a different cancer. He would scoff at women who found "a lump"... really? (he would ask to himself,) just one lump? His PET scan lit up like a Christmas tree. "One lump" would have been refreshing. And yes, I know- it's scary to find a lump anywhere, but in comparison it didn't seem like much. Of course I will be horrified if I ever get breast cancer, as my mother died of the disease in her forties, but I think I'll stay away from all the pink.
  5. It stops when the older one moves out. Everything else is a temporary measire. And my dds genuinely love each other, they really didn't understand why their constant bickering drove me so crazy.
  6. Technically, I'm exactly as smart as an Atheist. ;) I scored a 31.
  7. :iagree: I homeschooled for a year while my kids were getting SS. It might be an issue as your dd gets older, though- depending on when she turns 18. I had to have dd's school fill out a form so she could keep getting SS until she graduated high school, as she had turned 18 in the fall.
  8. I think it's fine, because Heather's a Christian who moved to Malaysia to work at a Christian school. It would be a tacky title for one of my posts, because I am not a Christian. As to the OP- I completely agree with you, Heather. And I appreciate hearing that this makes Christians crazy also! Every group has issues like this- sounds like you're trying to do the right thing.
  9. I would not cut fat from a child's diet. Brains need fat to grow & repair ... hormones are made of saturated fat. I would stick with natural whole foods, nothing processed, take it easy on all sweets. Take snacks with you so you don't have to buy junk food. Get her moving a lot- swim, walk, etc as a family. Please don't measure her food, count calories, weigh her in, etc. She's only 6. Everyone is build differently, that doesn't make them less or more than others.
  10. Any casserole- lasagne, mac & cheese, ckn-n-rice. Anything in a crock pot- chili, stew, roast, ckn & veggies, pulled pork. Serve a salad and rolls with the meal.
  11. Don't beat yourself up. My late dh wasn't diagnosed until stage 4. He would not have been concerned, but a doctor detected a problem at a routine aviation physical. In retrospect, dh had a LOT of small symptoms that should have alerted us to a problem- his waist was getting larger for no apparent reason (enlarged spleen), he was getting a lot of colds, when he usually never got sick. He was no longer cold all the time, his knees hurt more than usual. I actually got kind of mad at him, because he couldn't tell me if his knee pain was joint pain or muscular pain. The pain was caused by a tumor in his spine. Your doctor sounds like a complete ass, but even having a good doctor that orders all the right tests might only speed up a diagnosis by a month or two. Take care of yourself and your family- it's a roller coaster. :grouphug:
  12. This. I think it's a "company culture" type thing... it doesn't have to be this way. Last year, dd's school had a handful of teaching aides that supervised the playground and lunch room. They were horrible... always assuming the worst of the kids. A friend of mine got a job there, and when she was being trained they told her which kids to "watch out for" and who "needed to be yelled at." My friend happened to have a LOT of experience that the other ladies were not aware of, and she ended up writing a report for the school administration about what was wrong with their supervision methods, and a suggested policy/procedure manual for the staff aides. Long story short, 75% of the aide staff was laid off at the end of the year, new staff was hired, and the problem was fixed. I believe there are good after school programs out there, but the problem is a lot are run by people who don't care about kids, and just want an easy paycheck.
  13. I have a business, and I pay worker's comp. I like that WC is no-fault in my area. I have many part-time employees, and I don't cover them with health insurance... most of these part-time employees are students, so they are covered under their parents. But some are not, so I'm glad that they are covered if they get hurt at work. WC also pays disability while the employee can't work due to their injury. I have an employee who has been unable to work since May, and won't be released back to work until probably January. It was a freak accident, she wasn't even going to report it. Then she was going to see her chiropractor, which would have made it so she couldn't use the WC. Now she's covered until the end of December, and she can heal properly. WC can be a really good thing.
  14. Where in Colorado? If you're moving to the front range, the average December high temperature is 46. Sometimes we'll have a week in Dec or Jan when it doesn't get above zero, but it warms back up. Our snowiest month is March, April is second. We did get a huge snow storm over xmas break six or seven years ago- 3 feet of snow! But that's unusual on the plains.
  15. Thanks for all the information, ladies! I told her to go ahead and give it, but I am going to freeze her credit.
  16. So, my dd is trying to get a job at a restaurant. Chili's says they are hiring, but she must apply online. The website asks for a SSN, and says the application will not be processed without it. I hate giving out SSNs unless you are actually being hired, or banking. WWYD?
  17. I think James is an ass. Do you pay other people a referral commission? If not, I would stop paying James at all. I have been asked to get into a referral kick-back arrangement with businesses similar to mine. I have declined, because I want the freedom to recommend businesses I think are beneficial to the person asking for a recommendation, and not feel pressured to make a recommendation that's not quite right to a customer. I would look askance at a recommendation that someone was financially benefiting from. (I would assume the person was only making the recommendation to get the pay-off.) I do give my customers a financial reward for referring a friend, but it's a small thank you- not a commission.
  18. I had just dropped my girls off at school, and was meeting with my brownie co-leader. She told me a plane had hit the towers. I was so confused- just the year before my dh & I had flown our small plane around Manhattan Island... how could someone accidentally fly into a tower? Then we saw the video. I was absolutely astounded. My kids were both too young to "get" it... almost 8 and almost 3. We kept the TV off when they were in the house. But of course older dd did hear about it, but not in a meaningful way. Younger dd didn't really know what happened until a few years ago. The worst thing for me was watching people jump out. How horrible must it have been inside to completely give up hope and jump. And, of course, the emergency rooms waiting and waiting for survivors, and not having any. I remember the silence- no air traffic overhead. Wondering what the world would be like now. Wondering if life would even go on as we know it. Our resilience is amazing. I am truly proud to be an American.
  19. I think we do need to re-think this. In my town, a high school student was stabbed with a scissors (not fatally, but needed an ambulance to the hospital and surgery.) The boy who did the stabbing was schizophrenic, and had been kicked out of two school districts previously for violent episodes, yet was unsupervised at school. Yes, this boy has a disease and still should get an education, but not at the risk of everyone else. However, I think in examples such as the linked article, teachers need more help and more education. There are a lot of teachers who really don't care about kids who are a little different, they try to squeeze them all into the same box.
  20. I read the book. I was way more alarmed by the genetic modification issues that just the gluten. Modern wheat isn't really wheat... it doesn't even have the same number of chromosomes. I know that wheat was greatly stimulating my appetite. I would crave more and more wheat, I couldn't stop eating. I know wheat doesn't affect everyone like this. but I really don't care about others... I am a science project of 1.
  21. I like this attitude. Mainly because most people can look good as they age, as long as they take care of themselves. I was in fantastic physical shape in college (I was an athlete,) but I was an emotional mess. Not to mention kind of a jerk. I'll take myself now over myself then any day.
  22. People in my area are concerned an hope for what they think is the "right" candidate winning. (It's split on who is the right candidate...) I think it's already improving. I think my right candidate will make things slightly better, and my wrong candidate will make things slightly worse. I am going to give raises this month. It's been 4 years for my core staff since their last raise. I'm starting to feel like my head is above water.
