  1. The episode last night really bothered me- especially the part where the teen cheerleader said she felt bullied when she was a cheerleader, and the attitude of the response seemed to be - fix your problem and they won't bully you.

What? It's the victim's fault? It's now OK for kids to bully other kids for being overweight? What a huge disservice to other overweight kids who are trying to be more active. And that girl isn't even dangerously overweight.

So, is it just me or do I have company?

  2. I am looking at getting e-readers for the family. While shopping, I started thinking it would be really nice to have a tablet for one of us. I've been trying to research on the web- but it's hard to find what I need.

I would like a video camera that points forward- away from the screen. Is that called a back or rear camera? And then the camera that points toward the person looking at the screen is a front camera? I want to be able to video my daughter doing gymnastics...

Can my family share e-books? Does it work like i-tunes, where I can put any of the songs I own on any device? If I sign up for the Amazon Prime borrow books program, can I share that with my daughter who lives in Florida?

Thanks for any help- I am new to all this! No smart phone, no tablets of any kind, PC computers.

  3. Does this person seem to have a good time at your home? Does he/she live alone and just not know where to pitch in? Perhaps you could say, "______________, I'd like to catch up with how you are doing, come and give me a hand and we can talk," in a friendly way. Or, "__________ can you help keep the kids occupied while we get dinner cleaned up?" I think sometimes people need someone to give them a job to do.

I wish someone had done this for me when I was a teen. We didn't have many family gatherings, so I was pretty clueless. I'm going to do this for other clueless people from now on!

  4. My friend said, "Dr. Barnard makes a very persuasive argument that fats in the diet (from meat & dairy) make susceptible people's bodies unable to handle insulin correctly." As an aside, my friend is a vegan so I'm not sure how much weight to put behind this.

That's not how my body works. I reversed my diabetes with a high fat/low carb diet. My blood sugar shoots up with whole grain anything, but animal fats are completely fine for me.

I really think people should go by the numbers- get a blood sugar monitor and see how different foods affect your blood sugar. Eat that way for a while and get your HBA1-c done, and a lipid panel. Eat the way that makes your body healthier.

  5. No, because there is little scientific evidence that it is harmful. There is, however, a lot of junk science. Let the GMO-free tomato throwing begin. :tongue_smilie:

If there's no evidence, why are GMOs not legal in Europe? Why did Mansato et al throw so much money to reject the ballot initiative in California? Why is so much of the university-level "research" funded by companies that produce GMOs?

I'm not a conspiracy-theory kind of gal, but I do think research in this country is strongly influenced by drug companies and big ag business. If a university study finds results that are not in the best interest of the funding corporation, the funding for the university dries up. Profs lose jobs. Same way the cigarette companies covered up all the studies back in the 1950's.

I don't bother throwing tomatoes, because I know the truth will come out in the end, just like with cigarettes. If I'm wrong, my children will be better off eating whole foods for now anyway.

  6. There is no need to be gluten free unless you have celiac disease or are glulten sensitive. Gluten is the part of the bread that makes it hold together. It is not unhealthy unless you have one of the conditions I mentioned.

I have a different opinion. Not necessarily about gluten, but wheat in general. I think a lot of people would be better off avoiding what is called wheat nowadays, even if they are not gluten sensitive.

I have a strong reaction to the gliadin protein in wheat. It makes me crave more and more food. I can tell when I eat foods that have wheat hidden in them, because I have unbelievably strong cravings for MORE! MORE! MORE! when I am full. I avoid all grains, but I still get this reaction when I eat out sometimes. I ask if the item was gluten free, the wait staff asks the cook, and it always has some wheat in it... usually from the spices they used on the food.

I don't worry about avoiding things in advance, because I do not eat out much and when I do eat out, I want to enjoy myself. The feeling passes in about 4 hours, so I just keep myself busy to distract from the crazy cravings.

  7. Sigh. Self-centered whine over. Thanks for listening. Please don't yell at me. I "know" 40 isn't old...but....you know what I mean.

I'm pushing 50, and I think turning 40 was a lot more difficult.

I think it's important to take care of yourself, keep changing up your workouts and eating habits to find what keeps you healthy and happy. I think being happy is important to aging gracefully.

Remember that aging beats the alternative. We all know people who have died young from accidents and cancer. While I am still able to enjoy life, I plan to be happy and not stress over going grey and having assorted body parts go south.

  8. A new relationship does not mean that he is forgetting your sister in any way. IMHO, a new relationship is better than the alternative - refusing to let go and move on. Every one grieves differently. Of course you are going to grieve for your sister differently than her husband does.

    :iagree: except for the bolded.

Everyone grieves differently, and everyone moves on differently. "Getting on with your life" does not always involve another relationship, especially if that's not what your soul wants. My dh wanted me to get re-married ASAP. It's been 7 years and 2 months now, and I'm not dating. I don't think I ever refused to let go... it's just that letting go for me didn't involve moving on to romantic relationships. I didn't even feel "over it" for 4 years.

I would be horrified if dh's family didn't accept me for what I am, whether I re-married in 6 months or if I stay single for the duration.

OP- maybe your BIL is rushing things, but you won't know what's going on until you meet his fiance, and spend time with them as a couple. Whatever is going on, it's not her fault- so try to be accepting. You could even tell her it's hard for you, because you miss your sister so much.

  9. I'm becoming convinced that the primal diet would be very beneficial. All these supplements and shakes sound like quality products. But I was wondering if anyone with more experience with supplements can suggest some equally quality products (maybe from Vitacost?) that would be more affordable? Yes, I know that in many cases you get what you pay for. But I also know that there are some quality supplements that are more affordable...I just don't know how to make the comparisons. Anyone with more experience would be very appreciated!

    http://primalblueprint.com/products/Platinum-Package-%252d-AUTOSHIP*.html

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

You DEFINITELY do NOT have to take all the supplements to be "Primal". And Mark Sisson (who runs that site) agrees. Food is the best way to go.

But I do use the multi packet and the fish oil from Primal Blueprint. Very high quality supplements, and they don't make me feel ill like a lot of pills do. The multi-packs have most of what I want to take for my own health, so they save me buying 20 different bottles of pills.

The protein shakes from Primal Nutrition are fabulous, I received some free samples with my first vitamin order... but I don't use them because I prefer actual food.

As for the auto-ship, you can request the ship interval be whatever you want. I get a shipment every 2 months, because I don't take as many pills as they suggest.

  10. First of all, how traumatizing for everyone at the OB's office that day! I'm so glad to hear the mom and baby should be fine.

To ease your mind about this...

I cannot get it out of my head of course being pregnant myself it seems even more unsettling. I am also greatly disturbed by a conversation I had with someone else irt the event. She said that likely the women wouldn't remember it anyway as they would drug her up. I told her it is still absolutely horrific regardless. Then she made a comment about well, wouldn't you do the same thing- ie have the emergency section. Of course I would but that doesn't make it any less scary and terrifying. I cannot fathom someone dismissing the trauma of the event, brushing it aside like she did. Then the whole idea that the lady would be given some kind of drug to make her forget- do they really do that? I wish I could remember the name she said. I don't see how that is ethical. It makes me feel disgust and anger to be honest. How can one not have anything but extreme empathy in a situation such as that? Do we really care so little for one another?

I think this sounds like someone is trying to make you feel better, because you're pregnant and had to witness a traumatic birth. Some people just don't know what to say, and "yes- how horrific" doesn't seem adequate. So they are trying to talk you into believing that everything will be hunky-dory for that poor woman, so you don't worry about that happening to you.

I don't think it's ever right to dismiss someone's trauma, but in the immediate aftermath of something like that it's difficult to know what to do.

Take care of yourself, and try not to dwell on negative thoughts. Can you send flowers to the woman in the hospital?

  11. I've also read the 10,000 hours other books. I always took the research as encouraging. When I was a child, a stupid piano teacher told me I had no talent and was wasting my parent's money which made me promptly believe him and quit piano. A mean art teacher once told me I had no talent and was wasting her time. Now, I firmly believe that I can learn piano and learn to draw and paint because it isn't only something talented people can do; it is a skill that can be learned and practiced and mastered.

This is how I took the book also. I think the whole "talent" idea is American. We tell kids that they are either "good" at math or not. In Asia, they tell kids to work harder if they're not getting it. (This is from a book I read when I started Singapore Math with my oldest a long time ago...)

As far as the book goes, I enjoyed it- but it sure didn't make me want to make an Outlier of my kids. I don't understand why people would want to do that... but I do encourage kids to get really involved with an activity they enjoy, and to persevere through difficulties. Even "talented" people have to work hard to be successful. Outliers are extremely talented people who put in their 10,000 hours +.

  12. Anyone tried this?

It is ALL OVER Pinterest! What's the big secret? I've tried doing a web search to find reviews/info that aren't just props or sites leading back to the FLF site. So far...not finding anything.

I found this review in a quick google search.

Doesn't look like anything new. One more person trying to make a living off of fat phobia.

  13. So, I had my oncologist appointment today. I left the office shell shocked. He was such an arrogant jerk. He seemed to answer my questions in a mocking way, when he deigned to answer them at all. He wouldn't answer questions about chemo because "that's all part of the protocol, which they'll explain" when I get to the chemo center.

Anyway, I have to have 6 rounds of chemo. I go every 3 weeks. Starting in a couple of weeks.

As everyone else has said, get away from him ASAP. My husband's oncologists were ALL fabulous. I was amazed that they would always spend as much time with us as we wanted. They would always ask as they were about to leave if we understood everything, or if we had any more questions- if the answer was yes, they would actually sit back down and take time to answer. We never felt rushed or talked down to.

  14. My older daughter recently moved to the Orlando metro area. Younger dd & I will be visiting her in a few weeks. We love exploring natural areas, beaches, hiking, etc. Do you have any suggestions as to what we should do/where we should stay?

Older dd will be able to get off work F-Sun to hang out with us, so we can drive a little ways. But I don't want to be spending too many hours in a car.

Thanks for any suggestions! (FYI- I don't care for theme parks.)

  15. This is completely absurd, but I'm not surprised. I'm sure the government would like to have complete control over what school kids eat, you know- to make sure they don't become obese. Instead, they will feed the kids cheap crap laced with HFCS and artificial coloring, and wonder why they can't seem to concentrate. Better get them on Ritalin!

The new school lunch guidelines are completely absurd. I can't imagine limiting fat intake for my children-- in my opinion, limiting fats causes all kinds of cognitive and hormonal issues.

    about the lunch guidelines.
