  1. Kefir propogates quite quickly. I often find my via a local Weston A. Price email list for free.
  2. I've been using VSL3, but I don't know if it is doing anything. I suppose I should take more.
  3. Moby, hands down. Make sure you have someone help you learn how to use it. There is a learning curve, but it's oh so snuggly.
  4. My husband has been trying to get me to purchase P90X for a while, but he's not in the best of shape and I haven't been doing anything for a good long while. It's probably been almost 2 years since I've been in any kind of shape. If not P90X, what BB program would y'all recommend? I really hate cardio, but have enjoyed hard core strength training.
  5. I have two students in the D level this year. I'll give you an overview of my youngest student using the D level; she is 11, almost 12. We do the geography, timeline, core and in-depth reading, and literature. On Mondays, the girls will do their mapwork and timeline work. For the timeline, I found pdf's on one of the TOG yahoogroup websites. I know that they have these for year 1 and year 2, but don't know about anything further. If there is a lot of reading for the week, and the mapwork doesn't take an hour, I will have my student begin the history reading. While they do the mapwork, I will read some of the read aloud to them. Later on in the day, an hour of English is assigned. My student chooses grammar, writing and lit, which we call English, during this time period. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are the same. There is one hour allotted for history and one hour allotted to "English". Fridays, if neither of my students has been able to get the history reading done, I give them extra time to read. Otherwise, we have a history discussion. There is an hour allotted for literature to finish up any reading or SAP's, and to discuss the book. I do not assign all of the SAP questions for the history. I pick and choose what I like and what I plan to discuss. Sometimes, I will have my student write an outline of one of the books instead of the SAP's. My dd reads very quickly and retains information easily. She could probably do the church history and worldview if I assigned it. Sometimes I do. She will often look to see which part of SOTW is assigned for the week and read it. Last year, she was doing the UG history and lit. She got it done very quickly, so I also had her doing the D church history and the D worldview. In addition, she read every book I could find at the library from the LG, UG, and D levels. The history is a lot more work this year, so she is spending more time on her own history. I will still pick up books from the alt side of the reading assignments so that if she needs something extra to do, she will have some good reading. So far, she hasn't done a lot of the reading. We're getting ready to start Y3 and I think that I might have to add in the church history or the worldview to keep her busy in the first part of the year. My older D level student is 14. In addition to the D level history and geography, she does R level lit and government. Her time frames are very similar to her younger sister's. She reads more slowly and is assigned more of the questions to answer. I expect more from her during discussion, as she tends to be able to see more of the connections and draw from personal experience to expound on some of the topics. She does the government with her Dad.
  6. TAFA is having a used book sale this summer. Also, there are folks on the Horizons group that sometimes have a book sale. I tend to go to The Book Cover, but you can sometimes find good deals at the hs book store in Watauga. It used to be called Creative Arts in Action, but I can't remember what it's called now. NETCACHE probably has a used book sale, too, but I don't belong to that group.
  7. I really wanted my primary care doc to do all of that. Instead, I have a GYN who does all the female parts stuff. Then, I have a family doc that I see for the thyroid and the hormones. She kind of specializes in that and I'm pretty picky about the thyroid stuff. We also have a family doctor who we see for other sickness stuff. I'd see an endo for the thyroid stuff but I haven't heard of one who tests the Free's and doesn't rely on TSH.
  8. I agree that the baby is the lesson. I also think that my expectations can be too high. However, I'm very sick when I'm pregnant. So this last pg, I worked incredibly hard to get as much done as possible. Then, I never did get back up to speed after the baby was born. We're still about a quarter behind where I would like to be. In reality, we're probably a lot more behind what I'd like to be than that. We'll work through a good portion of the summer and try not to take off too much time in the fall during the High Holy Days. But really, this baby has made such an impact on all of our lives that I would rather be "behind" than be where I think we should be. Her 14 yo sister adores her. Her 11 yo sister adores her. Likewise the 8 yo and the 6 yo. And she adores all of them. She has special names for all of them and they don't think that's weird or odd. It's all good, even when we are trying to read a book and the baby comes up and sits on it.
  9. 9th grade has been: TOG History/Geography Y2U3U4Y3U1, hopefully we'll finish Y3U2 TOG R level Literature CW Diogenes Maxim, would really like to get to Chreia, but I doubt it Biblical Hebrew2 and Torah Appreciation, with several public speaking engagements canting aliyah LOF Beginning Algebra Just started Kolbe Physical Science PE has been on the back burner, hope to get to that this summer as she wants to get certified to be a life guard Volunteering in the nursery at least once a month where she is often responsible for coming up with a craft and teaching it to the children. This is not what I had planned, but it's what we've ended up doing.
  10. I have an 8 yo mostly in LG, but she goes into UG for some of the lit assignments. My 11 yo did UG for lit and history last year, with D level worldview and church history. She was bored. This year, she's in D everything. My 14 yo is in D history and R lit, though I do pick and choose what lit she does as it takes her longer to read. She's going to *try* R history starting in a couple of weeks when we move into Y3. I'm sharing this with you to let you know that it all just depends. I've gotten used to the idea that my 14 yo may spend her entire high school career in D level history. She'll certainly learn more in high school history than I ever did. My 11 yo will more than likely do R level history. She learns quickly, reads quickly and understands well. Put your son in a level that you think will be ok. The learning levels at TOG indicate that UG is for grades 4-6 and D is for 6-9. That's not cut in stone, and it most certainly gives leeway for the teacher to make decisions on where to place her student.
  11. My oldest did some of the Math Mammoth multiplication and division worksheets. It helped to solidify her double digit multiplication and introduced long division. Then, she did the two LOF books fractions and decimals and percents. She went into LOF Beginning Algebra after that. Currently, other 11 yo is doing Math Mammoth Division 1. When she is done, she may do more of the division, and I might add in the LOF books and/or the pre-algebra. She also does Singapore CWP.
  12. I love RightStart math. I own all of the levels and have been through levels B-D with 2 children. 1 finished level E and another went through part of Level E. However, I need to be doing math with my 8 yo, almost 9 yo, and I'm not doing it. Math does not come easily to her, and she struggles. She's finally reading fluently, so I expect that math will go better. I'm not doing math with her, though, because I just can't bring myself to do the RightStart lessons. It's a chore to find time to do discussions with my older children for TOG, do phonics and handwriting with the 8 and 6 yo's, nurse the baby, etc. as it is. My 8 yo started Singapore 1A a while ago. We haven't touched it in a long time. I just don't know what to do. Somehow find a way to do the RightStart? I am clueless as to how to make this happen. It's been on the schedule for weeks and I'm just not getting to it. Try Singapore again? Something else? I love the way RightStart teaches math. The manipulatives make math come to life for my kids. My older children are doing well because of how they learned math as younger children. Math Mammoth is pretty inexpensive and I am using the Division sheets for one of my olders. It's the time that is so hard. I am just not making the time to work with my girls on the RightStart and, at the very least, my 8 yo needs to be doing something. Words of wisdom?
  13. I ordered toner cartridges for my HP Printer at the end of November. Usually, they last around a year. These were from databazaar.com and were refurbished. I noticed that they did not work especially well after I got them. But, they were cheap, so I thought that I get what I pay for. I get splotches of ink on the paper as it's printing that don't belong on the paper. Today, there is no yellow ink in the cartridge. The other cartridges appear to be fine, but there is no yellow ink. This is not acceptable. I called databazaar. They don't care. Since it's been more than 30 days, they just don't care. They said that they would look into it, but I highly doubt it. I even talked with a manager. When I first spoke to her, I told her that I didn't want any money or a replacement, I just wanted her to know the poor quality of her product. Near the end of the conversation, she told me that she couldn't help me since it had been more than 30 days since I had purchased the product. I guess customer service is not a priority at this company. I honestly just wanted to let them know that I was displeased. I was hoping for an apology or that they were aware of the situation and were working on it. Instead, I get a canned statement about not being able to help me. I think they need to learn to listen and hear rather than just make canned statements. This just makes me so mad. So does anyone now the least expensive place to purchase HP toner cartridges? I don't think I will be purchasing a refurbished one again.
  14. You could start ancients again in 9th or just keep trucking along as you are and start early modern in 9th. I think that there is some value in being older when reading the ancient lit.
  15. Which Rod and Staff? I have Level 5, but they are inexpensive enough that I could probably get another level. I don't necessarily get through the grammar every year, so it's good to have something thorough. LOL
  16. I have one dd in FLL4. Her older sister didn't go through the FLL series and is working her way through Analytical Grammar. I don't think I want the dd in FLL4 to go to Analytical Grammar after FLL4. What are other people doing after FLL4?
  17. I purchased the Kolbe syllabus and answer key. It was $78 due to their $15 shipping charge. My dd really seems to like it so far. I purchased the book from the amazon marketplace for $20.
  18. We're fond of the books from Behrman House. My younger children have used the Shalom Ivrit series, but your child may want to use something for the adults.
  19. 'Tis true, but I recently found out that there were some units in Texas that had duplicate records in San Antonio. For some odd reason, DD214's can sometimes be found in St. Louis as well, though you have to ask about them a lot. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for what is and is not in St. Louis.
  20. Thank you to your family for your dad's service. It's possible for you to receive his medals, too. Many times, family members put together boxes with the service members flag and medals. We are still working on doing that for my fil. I have the flag, just haven't started the process to get the medals. I think that your dad was in too long ago for his records to be held in St. Louis at the MEPPS center there. But, you could contact them and ask them. They had a fire there in the 70's and lost a lot of records, but they might know another place where the records were located. San Antonio had a bunch of them for whatever reason. Be sure that you have his service number when you contact the military, as that is how they will be able to locate him. If I think of anything else, I'll try to post it. You're not the first person to have dealt with this, so I'm sure there is a method and process to get this information.
  21. We had a rough summer and fall. I'd planned to school through most of the summer since our spring was light. I had a baby in October and then a Bat Mitvah to plan in May. Then, I wasn't able to school in the summer and the fall was virtually a disaster. So. We are starting again. I have a new unit of TOG planned, despite the poor job we did with the last unit. The two older girls have almost all of their classes planned out. I printed yesterday. Oh, how I love to print. ;) I got to print more when I realized that the algebra book is loaned out for another week. It's 10:26 and my kids are still finishing breakfast. It's going to be slow going.
  22. Thanks Taz. I was looking at the high school course, but typed the wrong course name. She's providing more input now that I'm querying her more. We're thinking about having her read a basic chem and physics text this spring and then start her in a more rigorous biology in the fall. I'm thinking about Paradigm's IPC, but just the text. Conceptual physics and/or chem might also fit the bill. I hadn't thought about Abeka. I'll look into that. Other ideas are most welcome. I would like her to have three good science credits for high school and we may just have to do that in 10th - 12th grade rather than doing one in 9th. I plan to have her do some work over the summer, so she should have some time to read.
  23. I had a baby last year and haven't really been the same since. I've recently gone on some medication to help, but there are days when I'm really too tired to do much of anything with my kids. We didn't get much done this fall, and now we need to step up the pace. I didn't plan science on purpose this fall, to help ease into high school for my oldest. Well, now we are in the second semester and I have no idea what to do for science. She hasn't had a lot of science background and now we are heading into high school. She did a Life Science unit for Cyber-Ed last. She's currently taking algebra, but won't be done with it until sometime in the spring. Since my time is limited, I need something that she can do on her own. I'm looking at MODG Natural or Earth Science, OM Earth Science, SOS Earth Science, and Texas Tech online/print classes. They offer an environmental science and a biology that she may be able to do. I can get her a biology lab at the local community college this summer, I hope. She has no input, just knows that she needs science. I thought she might like an earth science class. I've also thought about Conceptual Physics, but I don't know if she could do it on her own. Plus, I'd like her to take physics and chem at the community college once she's a high school junior. Thanks.
  24. That's a fair statement. My dd was older when we through the Fractions and Decimals and Percents book. She hasn't seemed to need any additional supplementation, and has been successful with the Algebra. I wouldn't hesitate to put any of my kids into algebra after the first two Fred books.
