  1. I just got a Nook, and am having trouble finding the "great free downloads" of vintage readers that everyone keeps raving about. I am specifically looking for the Elson readers, and every time I find one somewhere for free, the formatting is atrocious!!! To the point that my son would just get confused trying to read it. Does anyone know a good place to find free downloads of these that are formatted properly, and have the original pictures with them. It kind of defeats the purpose of getting an e-reader when all I catch myself saying is " I guess I will just buy the book". Thanks for any input, I am very new to all of this, but trying to learn how to save money on books.
  2. Has anyone here used CQLA in combination with VP history? I was thinking that this would be cool for next year. I would think that using skills learned in CQLA in application with the writing prompts that the VP teacher's manual has would be a nice flow. Has anyone tried this? I love VP. I just feel scattered doing R&S over here, WWE over there, vocabulary over there, coordinating history readings and activities and all. I really need to streamline, and am thinking that this would be a great way to do it since CQLA covers a lot of what SWB does, with summarizing, outlining, copywork, dictation, not to mention spelling, grammar and other things. This sounds really nice to me. Input anyone?
  3. Makes me just want to bite the bullet and buy it, it is pretty affordable. There are also some Seuss units for free on homeschoolshare.com, but I don't like having to dig for stuff.
  4. My understanding is that it has somewhat of a Five In a Row kind of feel to it--you know, read the book together and do discussion/activities based off of that.
  5. Has anyone here ever used "On the loose with Dr. Seuss"? I'm thinking of adding this in for some fun for my 8-year-old who is bored to tears with Veritas. I am including him in with my fifth grader, and other than that, just do the 3 r's with him. This would be fun, any comments?
  6. MCT? I've heard or it before on this forum but don't know the acronym.
  7. I will be doing WWS with dd next year. I have been using R&S to cover grammar and writing this year(with narration/dictation), but just need something to cover grammar next year. Any thoughts?

  9. I am teaching a 7-year old and a 10-year-old, so I was trying to find something to work for both, this will also be next year, so it will be 8 and 11 for ages. If both resources would work, I could buy both, but ai was trying to find a great spine book that was kind of our "common denominator.". Although I like VP, I have found that all the resources listed on the cards are not necessary and it turns into much flipping around (which is why MFW did not work for me.). I have yet to see any suggested age range for using History of Us as a read-aloud.
  10. To pylegang: thanks, thanks, and more thanks for the maps link-- looks awesome!! About the other resources for reading, is there really a need for the History of Us and a Child's Story of America-- I want to avoid too much flipping around between a million resources or getting "overkill" on what should not be that complicated. We will also be reading the recommended lit books and doing the units for those. Is the issue with that other book making it more readable for a younger kid, or will my 7-year-old sit and listen to story of us also?
  11. I am using themiddle ages year now and like it okay, so I don't want to change history for next year, but my complaint is this: 1. There is no consistent map study. How do all you VP users incorporate geography/map study into your history? Other resources? 2. Next year's history(I've already got my hands on it and looked) seriously lacks enough activities/projects/crafts for my hands on kids. This is not very important to me, but it is to them. 3. Need a spine that reads like a story to break up the choppiness (other than SOTW). Not that I don't like it, but for next year it doesn't include enough U.S. Coverage. We use SOTW this year for supplemental readings/narration and it works great for now. Can the Story of Us books that VP recommends be useful for this purpose? I noticed that they are referenced on the back of the cards. Input would be appreciated. I am past trying to find the perfect history, I am thinking that with my few complaints with VP, I should just stay "camped out" there!!
  12. Thanks, I never thought about the library idea, I really need to streamline!! Flipping through multiple TMs to plan is getting old! It is funny that you mentioned the spreadsheet thing, because I have found that that type of layout of a plan really helps, it really is in the planning ahead of time, isn't it? Have you personally used both manuals? I am currently in middle ages year, and am wondering which activities are better in early American histpry year of both programs.
  13. For those of you who combine: If you could only use one of the guides, which would it be? I am trying to simplify my life because I feel very scattered in planning. I feel that sometimes I complicate things when I jump around if I dont have to. So, what would your vote be and why--VP guide or SOTW activity guide?
  14. For those of you who combine VP and SOTW, between the 2 guides, which one has better activities in your opinion. I am trying to cut down on cost for next year, and find myself overwhelmed at combining this from here, and that from there. I have thought about just buying the cards and using everything else SOTW, but enjoy the writing prompts and other things in the guide. I don't know why I just couldn't be happy with one curriculum. Why do we have to complicate things? Aaahhh! Any imput?
  15. My mother is getting my kids a microscope for Christmas, and I am trying to figure out what to do with it!! Does anyone know of an easy lesson plan/book/curriculum that would give me some guidance as to cool activities to do with it?
