  1. Buy the following book on the Kindle site - it is .99 - Free Children's Books and Young Adult Books for Kindle: Linked List of Over 1,000 Free Classics For Boys, Girls and Teens (Free Kindle eBooks) [Kindle Edition] Best money you can spend on loading a Kindle for a child.
  2. :iagree: No insurance here either (except for DH), but I want to be proactive rather than reactive. Every six months - like clockwork. We are fortunate because our dentist gives a 20% for non-insurance patients. Really helps the out of pocket.
  3. Today is my granddaughter's second birthday so extra birthday wishes to your dd. I got my oil changed for FREE on the van with a coupon this morning. We had ChickFilA for lunch because I had a coupon for free food and it was next to the oil change place. Looking forward to going to bed early - I am exhausted. I was going to see The Help last night with some of my homeschool moms to celebrate my birthday. That didn't happen because one of them wound up in the hospital with kidney stones while another watched the children. Ouch! Hopefully we will reschedule.
  4. I have the same problem. The anti-glare coating on the glasses helps a bit, but I HATE driving at night.
  5. We just re-financed. The appraiser could care less about boxes, etc. They are just going to see that the house is in good condition and things aren't falling apart. The bad news: don't be surprised with a low, low appraisal. We were shocked. We have lived in our home for 17 years. Over the years, the value steadily increased (no crazy bubble thing). However, with the mortgage debacle, our home has increased in value over 17 years by only $2,500. We were absolutely shocked. The appraiser could have cared less about improvements, additions, extras, etc. All he looked at were the two sales within 6 months of houses close to ours. It didn't matter that those two sales were of houses that were significantly smaller than ours or in worse condition and one of those sales was a distress sale. Hope you have better luck than we had. The silver lining to ours is that we will be mortgage free in 48 months .
  6. :iagree: Very well said. We adopted from China. We got a boy (very rare at the time) who was 28 months when we brought him home. From start to finish, it took us exactly 1 year and 2 days. He is considered to have a limb difference - a small group of lymph nodes on the top of his right wrist. Two surgeries and things are great. While there were times that it was an emotional roller coaster, we always knew that at the end of the road, we would have a child. For us, there were just too many unknowns/what ifs to adopt domestically.
  7. Kennesaw Mountain and Battlefield. There is also a children's museum at one part of the battlefield. Great for studying the Civil War. The Marietta Square has a good history museum as well as a Gone with the Wind Museum. Tellus Museum in Cartersville. Callaway Gardens and the Little White House in Pine Mountain, GA - about a 70 minute drive from ATL. Check out his website for more fun things to do - http://www.atlanta.net/50fun/index_new_b.asp
  8. Hands down I would use an agency. We have adopted from China and have close friends who have adopted from Vietnam and Ethiopia. Things would have been disastrous if they had been done independently (China must be done through an agency as well as Vietnam, though Vietnam is now closed). One set of friends just returned home from Ethiopia with their second daughter. While they took some matters into their own hands, without their agency, things would never have gotten done.
  9. Around 9:30. I have to take several medications at bedtime that take about 8-9 hours to get out of my system enough for me to function the next day. I like to be up between 6:00 and 6:15 in the AM.
  10. There are some here - http://www.airdelights.com/hand_sanitizers.html and here - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003YKCSDA/ref=asc_df_B003YKCSDA1679626?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=nextagus0057153-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395093&creativeASIN=B003YKCSDA
  11. Let's see - Mondays - TKD Tuesdays - We leave the house at 6:30AM to get to HS classes that run from 8-2, then back in the car to get to piano from 3-4 and then onto TKD from 4:30-5:30. Finally pull in the driveway around 5:45 PM. Wednesdays - Co-op (it meets in the church across the street from our neighborhood) Meets 5 times per semester from 2:00-4:00; TKD Thursdays - TKD Fridays - TKD My Tuesdays are crazy, but I would rather load up on everything in ONE day. Though TKD is daily, it is a 10 minute drive from the house and gives me some time to read or grocery shop. Last year we did much more and I was exhausted. This year, even with the crazy Tuesdays, is working much better.
  12. We are going this year from Sept 17-23. We will spend the 17th driving, have a leisurely day in Williamsburg on the 18, then programs at Jamestown on the 19th, programs at Yorktown on the 20th, and programs at Williamsburg on the 21st and 22nd and then drive home on the 23rd. I bought the 5 day homeschool package that includes Jamestown, Yorktown, and CW. For 2 adults and 1 child (plus some of the extra programs at CW), I only spent about $120. It is a super deal. I booked everything over the phone. The people at CW and J/Y are very helpful in planning your trip.
  13. All I can say is THANK YOU for the information regarding G3 and BrainPop. DS has BrainPop on his iTouch and loves it, but we have never been able to afford the full BrainPop. Right now, I have one excited child sitting at his computer watching Moby and his friends. DS is gifted and I truly appreciate learning about G3, too. The Hive is just a wealth of information.
  14. Same problem here. I do OAMC and bought a 10 pound bag to make mashed potatoes. We got home and DS was asking what smelled sooooo bad (nothing worse than a rotten potato). Sure enough about a quarter of the bag was bad.
  15. DS is profoundly gifted and the schools couldn't come anywhere near to meeting his needs.
  16. I have a Bissell Steam Mop. I love it. Our entire house is tile so it gets a workout once a week. Reasonably priced and Bissell backs up their products well.
  17. Our Goodwill does, but I agree with Scuff. We just got rid of three 'old as the hills' televisions on Craigslist. People were fighting over them.
  18. Here it is: http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Creamy-Grape-Salad
  19. DH is a teacher so we follow his schedule. I do start about 10 days early (takes in his pre-planning) and it gets us finished before all the end of school happenings start. Our days off: Sept 5 - Labor Day Sept 19-23 - Fall Break Nov 21-25 - Thanksgiving Break Dec 19-30 - Christmas Break Feb 20-24 - Winter Break April 2-6 - Spring Break I LOVE this schedule. We are usually finished about 2 weeks after Spring Break. Gives us our required days and we actually get almost a full 2.5 months off from school for the summer.
  20. I make my own detergent, but a couple of years ago, Consumer Reports compared laundry detergents. Guess who won? Costco's house brand - Kirkland. It edged out Tide in all areas.
