  1. My 11 year old does Bible, math, science, history, literature, vocabulary, logic, writing, and Latin on his own. If he needs help, he comes to me. A couple of subjects get checked each day (writing and history when he needs to write something). Otherwise, we sit down together at the end of the week to look through things. We do some Bible, grammar and some logic together each day. Spelling we do once a week. My 9 year old does Bible, math, science, and Latin on her own. We do history together with her younger brothers. Some Bible, grammar, and, writing we do together each day. Spelling we do once a week. My 6 and 5 year old boys do everything with me. (That is why the olders do so much on their own.:))
  2. It is so good to read these posts and know I am not the only one dealing with this. :)
  3. We usually get it out every six months or so to re-read and re-evaluate our time and priorities. The seasons of our family change so often.:)
  4. My son, also, was not ready to move as quickly as OPGTR moves. We have used www.progressivephonics.com. We printed off the short, cute books for us to read together. It helped my second ds to gain confidence in reading. I will be using it with my third ds this fall.
  5. I have been sad to not have vol 4 to continue with since we just finished vol 3. But, when I was thinking back I remembered that this was originally planned to be 5 volumes. And, she has had to combine the 4th and 5th volumes into one (because that is how we voted when she asked about it-4 or 5 volumes?). Now that I have to wait for vol 4 I wish she had decided on 5 volumes. Then, we would have vol 4 in our hands. :) I feel it is very worth the wait, but I agree that it is hard to plan around it.
  6. This is how we do it at our house. At least we did up until baby came in December. Things are a little off routine/schedule still. Hopefully, we will be back to it soon. :)
  7. We have six now and plan to continue classical education as long as we are homeschooling. Which seems like forever right now. :) This is us right now! I feel like I am just surviving, but it seems to be working. Last fall (before baby #6 arrived) we had a schedule for school days. I needed it so I would get one on one time done with the three oldest. Now, I get one on one time done when baby is sleeping or nursing. Everything else is done on their own. We will be adding another into the mix next fall. Hopefully, baby will have more of a routine to work around by then.
  8. We use WTM science for 1st and 2nd and just keep a binder with their narrations and any experiments they decide to do. In 3rd they start their own study with Elemental Science. My oldest DS and DD really like Elemental Science. :) As for Latin, we have followed the recs in WTM for when to start. They start Prima Latin in 3rd, Latina Christiana in 4th, and now First Form in 5th.
  9. In the earlier years (k-2) there is a lot of mom time with the students. But, as they get older there is less and less mom intensive subjects. I have found that I have plenty of time for the younger ones and still meet with the olders, too. We do history together from K-4. In 5th they start their own study of history ala WTM and classicalhouseoflearning.com for literature. In 3rd they start their own science with Elemental Science. I hope this make sense. I am still a little sleep deprived after having our last little one in Dec. :)
  10. We do lesson plans and recording. All of it comes from donnayoung.org. My 5th grade ds and 3rd grade dd each have their own binder that I fill out at the beginning of the week. They follow that on their own. I keep my K ds and pre-K ds sheets in my binder with attendance sheets, journals, reading lists, lesson plans, etc. It works for us. :)
  11. We, also, use are own paper for writing with ease. We start with HWOT paper, then, move to wide-ruled paper. That way all of our kiddos will use one workbook. ;)
  12. My 5th grade son is using it this year. He has thoroughly enjoyed it! He tells anyone who asks that it is his favorite subject. We are still using First Language Lessons 4, so that is where he is getting poetry from. I haven't researched what we will use for poetry after FLL. Just had a baby and we are just getting back to full-time school. :) Research will have to come later.
  13. We plan for four days so there is a day for appointments, shopping, co-op activities, etc. The fourth day usually has some homework they are finishing up for the week.
  14. This is how we follow TWTM. I depend on the method as my guide for planning our homeschool. The Curricula is chosen from there.
  15. Classical House of Learning Literature Great guide for literature. It is my DS 10s favorite subject this year.
  16. With a new baby coming, I am looking to have my fifth grader work more independently on spelling. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea what level he should move into. He is finishing AAS4 and is a really good speller. We have been going through each level to make sure he has that good foundation of rules. Any suggestions for which level of Spelling Workout he should move to would be greatly appreciated. I will research it myself if I need to, but thought I should ask here first. :) Thanks! (I posted this on the K-8 curriculum board, also.)
  17. Lattice multiplication is wonderful! My husband teaches lower level community college classes and recommends this to his students. Our kids are, of course, using it. :)

  19. We just had this situation last week. :) Two sick kiddos and a Momma with no sleep for three nights. My oldest two (10 and 8) do whatever they can from their planners. Usually math, Latin, science, literature, handwriting, vocab, logic, some history, etc. We, also, pick up some movies from the library. Since they do not watch tv very often, I don't feel bad falling back on these at times like this. And, take advantage of Netflix for Blues Clues, etc. Our kids have survived a little extra tv every once and a while. :)
  20. We are big Singapore fans here. We haven't used anything else. :)
  21. Our kids are combined (using MOH) K - 4th grade. It has taken us longer than a year to get through each volume. So, they will get whatever we get through. They don't start maps, timelines, etc. until 3rd grade. Starting in 5th grade we decided to start them at Ancients and do their very own four year cycle through 8th grade. Our son has his own timeline, maps, activities, literature, etc. It has worked really well so far, which is only a couple of months. :)
  22. redsquirrel, Thank you for explaining that section so clearly. I feel better now that what we are doing is okay. The encyclopedias just did not work for outlining. But, the The Kingfisher book of the Ancient World and the Almanac of World History are more like articles. They have worked much better for outlining. Thanks again! I have printed out your description to keep on hand. :)
  23. We just started these books this September for Ancients with our DS10. He is a strong reader and pretty strong writer. We own: Kingfisher History Encyclopedia (Red) DK History of the World The Kingfisher book of the Ancient World (found at the library and decided to buy) Almanac of World History We schedule KHE or HOTW the first day for reading, sentences, maps, and timelines. We usually use AWH for outling on the second day. The Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World has more written info since its focus is ancients. We use this for extra reading and sometimes outlining. We don't get a lot of books from the library since he can get so much info from these books. Also, we use CHOLL for Ancients literature, so he is getting a wider range of books for there. If he is interested in something in particular, he gets more books from the library. It has been a work in progress and has taken time to figure out which books to use for which days. But, I think we have the hang of it now. :) I know it is a lot of books, but we bought all of them used and he is our first logic stage child. We have a lot of kids that will use these in the future.
  24. My 10 year old son does these subjects alone (except for checking after he is done): Math Literature (there are some questions, narrations, etc with me) Logic (may need explanation at the beginning) Vocab Science (some experiments need help) History Latin (we watch the dvds together on the first day) Together: Grammar Writing Spelling It has been very nice to find some curriculum to just let him go with. Especially, since we "officially" started our K son this year and we are having another baby at the end of the year. :)
