  1. I don't know if anyone has gone through similar issues here but, some recent posts have all disappeared. I replied to these two threads, yet Ica no longer see my responses: So Discouraged I'm trying I opened a new thread on home education articles and posted about natural leaning, that too is gone. Any ideas why this is happening?

  5. Which format is your image in and what size? Have you checked out the 'manage attachment' page in your profile? If it's full you may need to delete one or two files. Other than than checking this, sorry I can not help further. Hope, admin helps you soon to sort it out.

  7. Go to: Profile Settings Change my photo Check 'use a custom photo' Choose the box 'upload from file' (not url) Choose file & click on 'done' Refresh page. Also check the format of the picture & the size. Sometimes only certain pixels are allowed so if the file size is too large it may not work. (I don't think it's anything to do with the number of posts, since you have more posts than I, you should be able to upload an image).
  8. As soon as my kids went through this book, First Lessons in Arithmetic by W.J Milne, their time telling issues flew out in space. (You can read it free, online). There is a Telling the Time snap game, which you can get from Amazon, if you think your DD still needs a push.
  9. Personally I found this book which is full of maths word problems really helped my kids: First Lessons in Arithmetic by W.J Milne You can read it free online. My DD daughter finds reading maths books more fun than games because she enjoys learning this subject. (General modern text books don't give word problems only questions which are meaningless to the child).
  10. No, you're doing fine, keep it up. That is how it should be. It means your sugar cravings have gone and you're less likely to have candida related food intolerances, allergies, IBS/CD, etc! Sugar is a poison. Cucumbers are great fillers.
  11. Keep to a healthy, naturally balanced nutrition, with exercise and be aware of food allergies & intolerances. Avoid, refined sugar, sweets, lollies, cakes, gluten, wheat, caffeine, high carbs, fruit juices, sodas, artificial colours & additives, trans fats, and all industrialised, factory processed junk foods.
  12. Thanks for sharing, Beth :) Here's two sites I found useful: http://www.kinderart.com/ http://www.crayola.com/lesson-plans/ They also have lesson plans on Van Gogh & other artists e.g. Henri Rousseau. Some really nice 5th grader paintings - art ideas taken from Henri Rousseau here: http://www.lz95.net/...t/arthome20.htm
  13. Could your daughter drop your grandson off at your place to learn? How about skyping your grandson and digitalizing his homeschool learning? Perhaps the eldest could encourage his Mum, to leave his little brother with you some days of the week. If she agrees then I would suggest concentrating on the priorities. If your grandchild needed to learn reading, I would advise on teaching this first. Some of these lessons in the books below can be completed within weeks, with producing great results. Reading: Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading by Jessie Wise Mc Guffy Primer (free) Starfall - (free) Interactive Phonics: A First Book in Phonics (free) Jan Brett's Phonograms (free flashcards) Language & Grammar: First Language Lessons Jessie Wise - covers days of the week, calendar, narration, etc. Arithmetic: First Lessons in Arithmetic by W. J Milne (free) The book isn't very clear online, but most of the work is done orally so the text is not used with kids. I wrote out some of the written work for my kids to copy whenever we came to that part. Science Narrations: First Encyclopedia of Animals- Kingfisher (use other library books too) Peterson cursive handwriting have free e-books. You can print out pages your grandson needs for writing. Penmanship It was sufficient for my kids learning from one, A Beka cursive handwriting sheet. While copywriting and with some little instruction on how to join up, they done quite well. See also a copy of The Well Trained Mind. Best Wishes
  14. This is my DD's first attempt at sewing a doll's dress using scrap material from my old dress: It's an Indian Anar Kali 'churidar' dress with legging style trousers. This inspired me to help my DD's to sew a simple (halter) doll's dresses. This was my rough attempt: I showed this to my children who got very excited and wanted to make one for their dolls. At first, I bought them some fabric. Next, we measured how long the dress would be and drafted a pattern: (Single sheet of fabric) For the width, we took the full hip measurement, and doubled it as we wanted the waist to be shirred. The length was taken from under the arms to the feet, leaving some fabric for hemming. The lace was sewn on first. The children shirred 0.5 cm below the lace at the chest. Then shirred 4 rows at the waist. (However, I think the result would have been better if we continued shirring from the chest to the waist). Finally the two side lengths were stitched and the halter neck lace was hand sewn on. The children have learnt a few skills whilst using the sewing machine. They did a small competition on who can thread the machine the fastest, which helped speed things up ;). Each got prizes e.g trimmings & lace for their dolls'dresses. They have learnt how to: Take body (doll) measurements. Draft a pattern on paper. Lay out, pin, draw using a chalk & cut fabric using a pattern Thread a sewing machine within 3 minutes! Wind a bobbin. Wind an elastic thread on bobbin Shirring technique Tighten & loosen top tension and bobbin case tension. Use stitch width & lengths Use different needle positions Make a shirred, summer dress. Use machine stitches, zigzag & straight & reverse stitching Hand stitches, straight, basting/tacking stitch Stitch lace on fabric Open stitches using a seam ripper Work as a team & solve problems Use a digital camera, take photos. The end result: Finally, the write up. :) I hope they can put this all together in a folder /lap book, so they don't forget!

  16. Sharing nice sewing ideas is the best way to keep motivated to have great fun on projects. If you don't have spare fabric, then using scrap cards are good for beginners who are learning to sew, Your child can learn to hand stitch or machine stitch. Learn to operate the speed of the machine pedal and have fun trying different stitches for machine embroidery. Try applique designs of your choice, using different stitch lengths & widths. Make collage cards using various household scraps (ribbons, beads, strings, tapes etc). This card (below) is simple - just cut out a heart shape and sew zigzag stitch around the heart on to another card. Tip: Glue the heart shape card on to the background card to stop it from slipping. Try stitching a collage with hand made paper! Click on the rest of the images to see the patterns Free Bead Pattern Free String Art: Free Collage Card Patterns
  17. Yes, I think the key is to learn advanced grammar skills for this type of reading & writing. Thank you Kalmia for the time you spent on your post. You are very adept at narrating classical texts :)

  20. I am okay about the first part and know how to break long sentences. Take a look at the figure on page 9, G.F Chambers hasn't suggested how they found the various inclinations of the orbits of the different planets to the plane of the 'ecliptic'. I assume then this is not the first text in astronomy. I also don't understand why they would call Venus & Mercury as 'inferior' planets - just because they are smaller or hotter, doesn't mean they are inferior. Imagine our solar system running, without one of them - planets will be thrown off-course the solar system running into a havoc.
  21. I never thought about about the vocabulary issue. I don't know much about MCT, (Michael Clay Thompson) before, but will check it out. Thanks
