  1. my dh has the same work schedule. He started it in Jan. Tomorrow he comes home after a 11 day trip. Then he will work from home for a couple of weeks and then leave again. I feel like I'm just getting into a routine. He comes home and messes it up. Not that I don't want him home, I do. it's hard being the only parent home. My son is also six. There is a lot of instruction that comes with school at this age. It is exhausting. He's not always excited about it either. Every day he drags his feet and I go through the 'if you were in school you'd be doing this all day long." This is a daily struggle. I sometimes fantasize about him going to school and I have a whole house to myself, a clean one too. But then I talk to thers whose kids are in school and their kids are crying every day because they hate school. I know it will get easier, this is a hard age. TAke a break if you can. Soak in the tub, read a book. Let the house go for a little. I had to do that for a month this winter. We did no school work and I stayed in my pajamas most of the time. It was nasty weather and there was nothing else to do. I feel better and refreshed because of the rest. Motherhood is hard in itself, topping it with homeschooling can be brutal at times. HUGS
  2. there are physics apps if you have an ipad. My son is six and he loves playing with them.
  3. I'm using GWG 1. It is very simple and uncomplicated which is what my son needs for his short attention span. I find it goes along with FLL, and it's not scripted. We haven't spent a lot of time on either, it's not something we do daily, or really even weekly. I also use Grammaropolis when we feel like it. I'm not stressing over it for first grade. I figure I'm getting him lightly familiar with the concepts, then in third grade or fourth, go into something deeper.
  4. Nest Entertainment has an animated video on Helen Keller. When I got mine it came with a download of coloring sheets. My son loves to watch the video.
  5. I don't know when the expir date is but I save soem of it to my ipad and don't print things that are just read, such as teacher instructions, info and story pages. I save as pdf and then upload to dropbox. Appears automatically on my ipad that way. I LOVE it! Totally makes TFB worth it, IMO. I have found so many good things on there. I plan on keeping the sub for another couple of years, at least.
  6. I won't go in the store after 5pm, not unless dh is with me. I feel totally not safe after then, and I live in a town of about 20,000. We've had too many purse snatchings and robberies in the walmart parking lot. It wasn't like that 20 yrs ago when I first moved here. Drugs have almost taken over our town. It's really sad how bad it is here now. Just last week there was a shooting at one of the schools. people are crazy.
  7. well I lived deep in the country in the 70's and for a time we weren't allowed to walk to school. There was a rapist loose that broke into and raped a 70 yr old woman. And then there was the child that was found tortured and killed in the woods. No one even knew who he was. When things happen like that in your own neck of the woods, you tend to be more cautious. I try to keep my eye on my son at all times, or at least within hearing distance. I don't think that is being too fearful, not in this day and time.
  8. I'd definetly wait until 8wks. One week can make a difference. The earliest I'd let my puppies and kittens go was 8 wks, and like was mentioned, 10 wks is really good.
  9. HUGS I"ve had a foster baby taken from me too. It's very difficult, on par with my miscarriages.
  10. I just got a Brother laser monochrome printer for $77. I love it. It's fast, even duplexing it prints faster than my Kodak color printer. Clear print and very easy to use. We still have our Kodak, dh uses it for work. I haven't yet needed it for color as everything I print doesn't need color. Most of my curriculum is in pdf form so the math worksheets and some science, and some language arts needs to be printed. Anything that needs to be read I just leave on my ipad.
  11. Little britches series by Ralph moody The Yearling. If you can find the Beany Malone books she would enjoy those. Don't forget Little Men after Little Women All of a kind family by Sydney Taylor Calico Bush, and Hitty both by Rachel Field
  12. I downloaded them from teacherfilebox so feel they are a good value. As my son likes very short lessons I think they will work well for us. He's not one to color but he does like making pop up things and other crafty things like that. We just did a kangaroo out of a cardboard paper holder and a cut out of a kangaroo. He enjoyed that so I think he will enjoy the pockets. Probably won't make them as pockets but notebooks. We will get into them this week, along with perusing the encyclopedia for the same civilization. SOTW was just too long for him right now.
  13. Mom- 26, I was third Me-39 Dh mom- 30, he was the fifth Dh -40
  14. I went for the first time a month ago to one in the next town. Wish we had one. The place was spotless and the food was excellent. I was very impressed. I think it had good service, at least the cashiers acted like they care. At McDonald's they act like you're bothering them...
  15. There was some grammar in our K phonics program. Using FLL loosely with Growing with Grammar. My son is first grade
  16. My son has never gone to bed early. Ever. But he sleeps later in the morning. He averages 9 or 10 hours per night. Once or twice a month he will sleep 12 hours. Every child is different in the amount of sleep they require. My boy has told me that sleep was a waste of time..l
  17. we went last fall and we loved it. The walk is very nice, there are a variety of rides for different ages, plenty of places to rest, good food, and lots to see. It was very relaxing. My son loved it and wants to go back. I do think one day is enough, we had thought we would need two days but we didn't. We stayed from opening to closing. oh the cave. If you are claustrophopic you will need to be prepared. The steps are steep and the handrails are very slippery. I almost had a panic attack on those stairs. It is dark, and the drop is very long. There is not much between you and that cavern. Once you get on solid ground it's not so bad, but the panic stayed with me. I was especially nervous of my son going under the rails. I have never sweated so much in my life. I liked Blanchard Springs Caverns in Arkansas much better. IT was an easier cave.
  18. y we are reading the tale of Benny Badger and my son loves it. Good vocabulary but the chapters aren't that long. here's a list of free audiobook and ebooks. I don't really recommend the audiobooks, at least some of them, because the reader is horrid. http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/search?cx=partner-pub-5879764092668092%3Awdqcfbe9xi9&cof=FORID%3A10&ie=UTF-8&q=arthur+scott+bailey&siteurl=www.booksshouldbefree.com%2Fbook%2Fhans-brinker-or-the-silver-skates-by-mary-mapes-dodge&ref=&ss=2104j1575538j5
  19. everything I was going to suggest has been mentioned! LOL! oh, except The Wind in the Willows. My son hasn't read it for himself but he loves to listen to it.
  20. Evan Moore has a wide variety of science workbooks. There are teacher instructions that tell you what the main goal is. Very easy to add extra stuff if you want to. I'm doing Daily Science 2 with my first grader and he loves it. There are other science books they have that I want to look into. If I had known about it I would have done it starting in K.
  21. My dh works so I can stay home and homeschool. Occasionally he makes breakfast when he's able. He gives me support when I'm feeling down, and agrees with whatever curriculum I decide on. He's not a good teacher, at all, so it's best if he doesn't mess with any of it. He does teach him how to be handy on the cars and things outside. He's only 6 but he's been handling tools since he was little.
  22. I read EB WHite along with Mr Popper's Penguins and KIpling's Just So stories. There are tons of children's books for free on this site: http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/genre/Children You can get the ebook and the audiobook. My son also loves the Raggedy Ann and Andy books. Another sweet little book is The Tale of Benny Badger. I don't recommend the audiobook tho, the reader is terrible, tho my son doesn't mind. It drives me nuts.
  23. I just emailed her that I have the 2008 - 2011 version and asked if I needed to be worried about using it. Should I not worry about the changes? We're doing first grade, seems like a lot of stuff is moved to 2nd and 3rd grade, and more addition/subtraction in first grade? I didn't think that was possible since it's chock full of addition and subtraction...
  24. Rosemary wells does write for children but she also writes for teenagers. Barbara cooney writes suspense and mystery for teens. Lois Duncan does too.
