  1. I'm another that is happy to read this thread! The other day my 6.5 yr old, who has been sounding out letters since age 2.5, couldn't remember what sound the A makes!!!! What? ??? I think with him it is a matter of his interest. He'd really rather play then do anything, so if he's not interested or caring about it at the moment, he chooses not to access the information in his brain and tells me "I don't know." drives me nuts, but glad to see it is normal. I'm coming to the conclusion that I need to just stick to the bare basics for a couple more years. I am also a lover of Hunter's posts! Just got in books she recommended - "How is my ---grader doing in school? LOVE THEM! Such a help to me as to what to expect developmentally of my child. Thanks so much HUNTER!
  2. I've gotten two of those but found them really really slow to open, so I deleted them. I also installed Overdrive so I can download books from the library. I got a 32 GB and had it almost full. I had only 2GB left and had to delete stuff so it would run a little faster! When it's full it's a bit slow...
  3. I just joined - how do you post? have been wanting a group like this for a long time! I feel so weird sometimes, HSing an only. It's very different from HSing multiple children.
  4. Is there a reason it's going to be four hours? Is that a state requirement? I find first grade can often take between one to two hours for the formal things, not counting our reading time that we do at night. A lot of things can be combines, as well as listening to audiobooks, watch a science video, or doing required reading at night.
  5. I was thinking this today -if I could start over with my boy I would only focus on reading and writing, with simple math games. We read lots of books anyway so that wouldn't change no matter what.
  6. I can understand that feeling. My six yr old loves other kids so sometimes I feel like I'm cheating him keeping him at home, even tho we have playmates and he does lots of outings with us or my parents. Then I hear stories of first graders molesting each other and I'm glad he's home.... Then I think the drawbacks of public school outweigh any social benefits. Besides the fact most children I talk to around here say they really hate school. HUGS
  7. I'm thinking my son might do this same thing. He has done that with lots of things in the past. Seems like he'll never get it and then all of a sudden he does it perfectly. I think some kids do some things when they are ready, no matter what we do to force it!
  8. my son is JUST like this, except his grip is fine. Draws beautifully and write just fine when it's something he wants to write. anything else is torture for him and for me.
  9. Hunter = thanks for the suggestions! I just ordered first and second grade of How is My ---- Grader doing in school. Looks like just what I need to make sure I'm doing what is best for my individual child!
  10. I bought an entertainment center off Craigslist and put it in my dining room. Holds all materials and books. I can close the doors when I'm done and it's very neat. I love it. I spent $100.
  11. we did K12 for kindy. Didn't really have any issues with kindy math, we got it done in one semester. Then we went to first grade math. AUGH! was my reaction. I found it disjointed and overwhelming. No review with math facts at all. We switched to math mammoth. tons of review. Mind numbing review. So I threw in some Miquon and now Evan Moore math. It's more fun for my 6 year old. He doesn't have his math facts down either. I was also told by a Gifted and TAlented teacher that if he understands the concepts then to just move on, that she could never memorize math facts either. I also use Verbal math lesson books. They are great for developing mental math skills.
  12. For numbers above 15 I like to use the cuisenaire rods and ten rods. Those are invaluable to me.
  13. two things we used the most - one inch colored blocks and squares cut out of different colored foam. used for pattern making, adding, subtracting, multiplication, graphs, sorting, odd and even, grouping, etc.
  14. La - Tony Chachere's, Community Coffee, Mchilhenney Tobasco sauce, rice, yams, Canes syrup, Raising Canes.
  15. No I wouldn't do it. I could never give up a baby I carried, no matter whose it was. It broke my heart to give up a baby I didn't give birth to.
  16. I look over it and pick out what I can use. I don't mind so much giving the teacher what to say, but when it provides what the child should say, that drives me nuts! My son usually gives way more involved answers!
  17. Yuck on that weather! It's why I live way south! It was 80 yesterday and 44 this morning, 41 tonight. I'm ready for winter to hit e door for good! But it could visit in August...
  18. No way! Just think of the camping group that was washed away a few years ago. I believe it was in Arkansas. Terrible tragedy. Anyone who does that is irresponsible. Stay safe and dry.
  19. My upper and lower back are too straight. Have had tons of pain for years. Chiro helps, but exercise is key. Recently was going to PT for rotator cuff issues. Exercise Nd stretching makes a world of difference.
  20. No, thank God. Just got back from Nebraska and Iowa. Spring has not gotten here yet, it's still January, not April. There is a reason I live in the South, short winters. Loving my warm air and green surroundings. It may get hot and humid but my air conditioner works well.
