  1. Amy, I'm so glad you enjoyed this. It's one of my favorites as well.
  2. My oldest sent my youngest the book El Deafo for her birthday. She came across a reference to "We all live on a Yellow Submarine" on page 1 and started laughing "that is so random!". I had to introduce her to The Beatles' rendition so that she would be properly educated.
  3. Reading books, just not finishing anything. A little local library trivia...the cost for out of county library cards is going up from $40 to $100 per year this month. A little too steep including a 30 minute drive.
  4. I have owned this book for years but have never actually read it. I love all Richard Peck's books. I remember listening to Fair Weather, A Long Way from Chicago and A Year Down Yonder while I painted my upstairs bedrooms. I'll have to move Teacher's Funeral from the shelf to the tbr pile.
  5. Speaking of alligators, yesterday my husband and I drove from the west coast to the east coast of Florida along a route we had never been. We are both long-time Floridians and our jaunt took us along the path of the recent hurricane. We decided to take the back roads home rather than the highway and at one particularly remote spot my hubby said, "Remember that alligator farm I was working on? It's right down that road. There are pods where they grow thousands of alligators." I had forgotten that he had done some engineering work for an actual alligator farm (think expensive purses and fritters). I found it quite ironic since he has recurring nightmares about alligators despite the fact that we are both UF grads - Home of the Gators! Anyway I thought I would help keep the gator thread going a little longer. BTW, We were graduating from college in 1984.
  6. I just bought myself a cheap cd player from Wal-Mart so I can continue to crochet and listen to more audio books from the library. Current selection: My Name is Lucy Barton.
  7. Well I finally finished Underground Airlines this week. What started off as a fast-paced thriller for me ended up being slow as molasses. It took me about two weeks to get through the final 50 pages. I don't know if it was the story took a wrong turn for me, I was staying up too late watching the olympics, or I was distracted with the start of school. Anyway, it ended up being just meh for me though I thought I would like it better based on the original premise. I was able to get one good read-aloud in with dd (10). Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat is always a great way to start the year.
  8. "far better fluff" LOL, you ladies crack me up.
  9. Yes, and they are very loud when mating. We have a creek behind our house - lots of crashing and thrashing. We thought a big gator had gotten something but no, just the call of the wild.
  10. Just got my B&N ebook credit. $21.71. I won't have as much fun as Robin but it is a nice little surprise. :)
  11. Wow! Congrats on the settlement money and good luck on the business property. Sounds like a lucky day for you. I'm supposed to get a credit too but I'm not expecting much.
  12. Yes, it was the Corrie Ten Boom novel. And yes, it was very sad and moving. There were many scenes that brought me to tears: like when Corrie's sister Betsie dies in the concentration camp. My kids are in a Christian Dance Ministry with an amazingly talented young director. I posted some pics in post #14.
  13. American Heritage Girls - apparently camping with other moms brings out the rebel in me ;)
  14. I just reserved my own copy, though I have no idea where I am on the waitlist, In non-fiction news, I'm almost finished with the audio version of Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World and, as the honorary winner of the "rebellion" badge at our last AHG campout, I am liking it enough to buy the paperback or Kindle version.
  15. My daughters and son were in a ballet production of The Hiding Place this weekend. It. Was. Amazing! Here are some pics I thought you all would like to see. BTW, almost every dancer was a homeschooler.
  16. In book to movie news: The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin is being made into a movie starring Kate Winslet and Idiris Elba. http://variety.com/2016/film/news/kate-winslet-idris-elba-mountain-between-us-1201791718/ I know the author's sister and they are very excited to say the least. I'd better get crackin' and actually read one of his novels. Luckily Kindle has Mountain for $1.99 right now.
  17. Thanks for your review of WTF. I had seen that preview at the movie theater and definitely thought it was a comedy. I hate when they do that with movie trailers. I was thinking of looking for the book at the library since non-fiction, real-life narratives are right up my alley.
  18. Why is it I get a thrill when I see someone's stacks pictured online???
  19. I've done a poor job keeping track of my reading this spring. Perhaps by the end of June when things slow down a bit I can resume real reading. I have been listening to a great audio book while I clean (bookshelves) upstairs. My books are way too scattered in various rooms of my house and it's time to put some sense of order to them. So I'm listening to Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World by Adam Grant. I'm liking it enough to consider buying the paper copy.
  20. Robin, I just signed up thanks to your info. I never knew about this. I think this will be an early father's day gift for my hubby.
  21. I've had Angela's Ashes on my shelves for years. I can't believe I've never read it. Maybe I'll just splurge and get it on Audible for my upcoming road trip. Haha, that would totally be me, blushing and looking around with my headphones on, wondering if anyone else could hear.
  22. I will do my best :patriot:. BTW, I read Station Eleven at the beginning of last year. It was just okay for me but sci-fi is not my favorite genre. I know others liked it better than I. Did MMV read it? For some reason I think it was on her list.
  23. I just finished reading last week's threads and I realized I'm an old boardie too. I'm pretty sure it's been over ten years but from the relatively small number of posts I have you'd think I was just a lurker. Seriously, if you met me in real life you'd be amazed to see how much of a true extrovert I am. Maybe that's what it is...I'd rather be having real conversations instead of just typing them. I'd love to join any east coasters for a museum meet up.
  24. I just got back from our first graduation ceremony for our CC group - eight years in the making. We had five graduates and it was a very personal and lovely ceremony. I had to emcee and I didn't cry - even after the slideshow with all the baby pictures. My heart is full :001_smile:
  25. Minerva, I have checked out My Antonia twice now but have to return it to the library before I get to it. I really need to move it up to the top of my list. Thanks for the reminder.
