  1. We did (although I did remediate spelling with PR3 spelling words -- no latin parts, though). We started with the Bridge and dropped it. Then the next year, we picked up LR1 and are now in 3. They (3 students; 2boys 1 girl) used Rod and Staff for all of elementary school grammar and a variety of spelling programs. They had no previous studies (a blip here or there, but nothing that really stuck) and have done well. The next lot will benefit from PR, so they will start Latin with a lofty vocabulary of latin roots! It will be nice, but certainly not necessary.
  2. I'd say start using spelling class as your place for phonics. It has worked well for our household to spell to read, so perhaps your application of phonics and spelling rules to spelling words can continue her lessons at this point. Have her read aloud to you daily because this is really another perfect place to get in phonics instruction. You can have her use her skills, remind her, even add in new sounds (if you still have some to add) in a read aloud context. It does help break up the monotony of "phonics" class. I'd suggest making the read alouds easy enough to encourage her, just be selective in which ones she reads so you can use them as a tool to practice as necessary. You can peek at various reading lists (Veritas, Sonlight) to see some books from the library that are early readers appropriate for early readers. There are some sweet series we enjoyed that were chapter books to fill the gap between Dr. Suess (which is long enough to create your own chapters!) and Abridged classics and later Nancy Drew. I imagine your library will have a similar section with something to interest your dd. There are also some great Step Into Reading books in all levels of reading that will move her into chapter books. This will allow for some factual reading, which has always been enjoyable for our early elementary kiddos. When you feel like her reading is fluent start pulling out some tougher chapter books and expect to read through them a couple pages at a time instead of a whole chapter. She'll pick up speed in no time and soon she'll be reading those books on her own. Sounds like you two are doing great! Congrats to you both. Reading is a wonderful way to spend your days!
  3. As a matter of attaining confidence in your decision, I'd contact Barbara Beers, the author of PR. I have spoken to her about PR for dyslexics and she said th program is OG based and will work for dyslexic dc b/c that was the intention. What you will need to do is be familiar enough w/ OG from your own training to add fingerspelling, pounding and perhaps the "hand up the arm" movements incorporated in OG that PR does not teach. You can see examples of those things in this video. I have heard from parents of dyslexics that they thought PR would be too fast for their learner b/c it does not focus on word families, but to that I say, go at your own pace and the movement and songs make memorization easy. Hope that helps. We use PR for different kinds of learners and we have been extremely successful.
  4. teach him and consider it teaching in multiple forms. Some students would be better suited for the movement of looking something up in a dictionary...as opposed to the instant nature of online dictionaries. Personally, I allow both, making sure they get ample practice in both for our studies.
  5. wait to you get through PR3....much developed writing!
  6. I just wanted to jump in here and say I miss you all....too busy for the forums, but still loving PR and happy with schooling. Tough year (too busy for *my* time). xoxoxox to my PR friends.
  7. AAR, the precursor to AAS, is for reading. While AAS is specifically spelling, the approach really hits phonics hard, so it is fine. You wil need to cover the other areas of language arts. My personal favoritie, THe Phonics Road is everything you asked. It has made a difference in our home schooling world.
  8. Must be the scale. No, it wasn't a postage scale, but a kitchen one that always worked before. I guess I'll have to get a postage scale. Any suggestions?
  9. Three times this year I used my scale and printed up a mailing label ala Paypal...only to have 2 packages returned for insufficient postage and another arrive with a large amount "due" to the receiver. Has this happened to anyone. Maybe my scale is off?
  10. I used YouTube to listen to the songs and we sang over and again until we got the melody. It wasn't too bad. You'll be surprised at how quickly they'll pick up the songs after a few spelling lists. You will sometimes sing the same song many times over in a week's span.
  11. Hey, Kristen. They should be on a piece of paper in the Foreman's Guide. She will sing them throughout the DVD, but you should have the paper. Pm if you can't find them. I can help.
  12. Week in Review 8/29/11--9/2/11 Grammar School Highlights version ;) No time for the Elders to get a post, this week :) They are all doing well and moving along nicely. Soccer starts Saturday and they are all quite pleased. College has me busy, but it's the Good kind ;)
  13. WOOT to everybody still in PR! Yes, we are planning on sticking all the way through to LR3. Love it!
  14. Just surveying for my own understanding. Thanks :) I'm in school so I can be degreed to teach when my youngest is ready to fly the coop. I'm going slowly and hope to be finished in 3 years, then teach for an online school whilst I finish up with ds.
  15. I'm so glad. I have to say, using a couple good writing programs has taken the fear out of me. FINALLY. It is something that someone who loves to write, like me, could feel like such a terrible writing teacher. It's hard to put into words something that always came so naturally for me...esp. when I'm trying to help my mathaholics understand. It's really like 2 different languages! Enjoy your journey!
  16. I have wonderful friends here :) Thank you all for your kind words. DyD seems to be improving. I guess she was just over the summer time nothings of life. We started back to our sports league (a recreational/fundamental league we enjoy very much) and to her joy, one of the families we are closet to joined this year. I am so grateful. I have prayed that the relationships between our girls would really blossom. She is also finding some joy in our latest addition...now affectionately dubbed Bunny. I had to demand (smiling as I did such) that I actually get to hold him yesterday. If it were up to DyD and her sister (aptly, Lil' Mother), I'd never even snuggle with our Bunny. He is, btw, not a bunny, but an 8-week old newborn we will babysit several times a week. Thank you all for your support and encouragement. I am making efforts to simply enjoy her. She is my twin in so many ways, I think I fret most about her b/c I want to correct all those mistakes....that's another thread, huh?! :grouphug:
  17. I had to vote "other" b/c we do spell to read in 1st grade.

  19. :iagree: I've got to share the book photos w/ dd. SHE WILL LOVE IT!
  20. Thank you all so much. It means a lot to come here and vent, then receive some hugs from trusted friends. THANK YOU. I'll be sure to update you all ;)
  21. Missed ya'll last week, but I squeezed in some time for posting this afternoon.....at the expense of discussion (oops). Here you go.
  22. Aw. :grouphug: Thank you. If you knew where I came from, you'd understand. If it was not for the same sort of kindness offered me, I'd not be the same person today. God is creative in how he uses and places His people. It's my blessing and while some days are a little burdensome, it's usually b/c I have slacked somewhere, not b/c of my wonderful additions. God loves me enough to share with me!
  23. Purpose Games :) Matches wonderfully with TOG4 wk. 3
  24. EXACTLY! My girls have begged me to have another baby for some time. Now, we are all happy!
