  1. She’s in her second year at a junior college, majoring in education for now. I told her flat out not to go. Her friend is depending on her because the husband is deployed. My daughter is torn.
  2. My 19 year old’s best friend who lives 1000+ miles away is pregnant and due at the end of the month. DD has booked a flight that leaves on the 20th and returns on September 10th, which means she will miss the first 2-3 classes for each class. Obviously I think this is a bad idea. She has since realized that this was a bad choice and is trying to change her flight to head home sooner. I’ve given my opinion, and have stayed quiet about it. How bad is it for her to miss so much school so early? I told her that she should at least contact her professors and let them know ahead of time. Is there anything else I could/should say?
  3. It’s been discontinued. The closest app I can find is sloth, but I’m not sure it’s even close.
  4. DS - Math 40 min., copywork 10 min, audiobook or science documentary, read aloud Harry Potter DD - Math 30 min, handwriting, read aloud Despereaux, piano lesson
  5. I use notability for pdf worksheets that I don't want to print out. The kids use a stylus to write on my phone or their iPads. I use one note for school and work. It is where I keep a diary of our school progress. I do this to help keep me accountable. I also keep a notebook of ideas that I want to implement in the future with the kids. For work (I'm a realtor and run a construction company with my husband), I use it for the construction business to store contacts and information and to keep checklists and report progress on projects. my iMac Apple calendar is synced to my phone. I'm still figuring out how to use this aside from work purposes. I'd like to have a family calendar where everyone can input their schedule and important dates for everyone else to see. If anyone knows how to do this, please share! Pages and Numbers are used to create tables spreadsheets and charts for both school and work. Chore charts, daily routines, utility due dates, reimbursement forms for the older kids, etc are some examples. I set up reminders (and alarms) to keep me on track throughout the day. I tend to get hyper-focused on any one task and have trouble transitioning from one thing to another. I put a screenshot of my current reminders. Office lens is used for my real estate transactions. I love it.
  6. I use notability, one note, Apple calendar, office lens, pages, numbers, and reminders (because I don’t know of a better app). My current favorite is numbers, with one note a close second. I know that technically numbers, pages, and office lens aren’t “productivity apps,” but I include them because they help me be productive and are fun to use, which keeps me motivated to do my work.
  7. I read this morning that the shooter was charged with manslaughter. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/13/us/florida-stand-your-ground-shooting.html
  8. I consider myself somewhere between night owl and early bird, which means it won’t be too painful to wake up earlier as long as I’m consistent.
  9. No school today. Our a/c went out this weekend, and we’ve had contractors in and out all day. $1500 later, we have a cool upstairs again but learned that our water softener has a leak, so I need to call to have that repaired tomorrow.
  10. These schedules make much more sense than the routines I was coming up with. The main difference is that I was starting my day with exercise. If I wake up earlier, I can fit everything in, duh. I don’t know why that didn’t occur to me. Thank you!
  11. Our house came with shutters. We have a row of small windows above the normal sized windows that were not covered, so we recently paid to have matching shutters installed. I have gold blackout curtains from a previous house that I use to block the sun out further when we need good sleep. It’s like sleeping in a hotel.
  12. My son was exactly as you describe, down to the sudden refusal to color and light squiggly writing. I recommend many of the things suggested already, including stickers, scissor activities, sorting small objects, and play dough. What seemed to make the most impact from my observations was assembling Lego sets. I started by doing most of the work, asking him to help find pieces for me to put together. Then I’d ask him to get started on a set and call me when he needed help. At first I needed to stay close by, but after a while he really took off on his own. By this point he was more willing to practice handwriting. He continued writing lightly and slightly squiggly because of how he was holding the pencil. He was intentionally keeping his hand off the paper while writing because he doesn’t like the feel of paper. I’ve since found paper that he can tolerate, and once he was able to plant his hand down, his writing improved quite a bit. We continue practicing handwriting still because I really backed off when it was obvious he wasn’t ready physically. I think he’ll really get it down this year, as I plan to back off a lot on writing for him as much as I did in the past. Hope this helps!
  13. I work part time as a realtor and have managed to work and homeschool so far. With DS going into 4th grade, and DD in 2nd, more of my time needs to go to homeschooling. Add in daily exercise, three older kids who attend community college and/or public school, chores, and food prep, I can’t seem to figure out how I’m going to have enough time for everything. Oh, and I’m extremely introverted and also need ‘me time’. I need help please! How much time should schooling take at this stage? I’ve allotted 1.25 hrs for exercise and driving to and from class, which begins at 9:15 am. I need time in the morning to check email, return calls, and stay on top of my transactions. I need a little more time to follow up on all of these things before the close of business daily. I also need time to myself to recharge my introverted self. My kids wake up after I get home from my bootcamp, and they stay up later to spend time with my night owl husband, so while not ideal, I could schedule some schooling in the evening. I can list our subjects if it is helpful.
  14. Lol. Our party season is Oct./Nov./Dec. Our December baby was due late January. 5/7 family members have birthdays during this three month period. The other two are in June and August. After Christmas it’s good to know we’re done with major celebrations until June. Conveniently I always forget about Easter in the spring until a couple of weeks before the holiday.
  15. Yesterday we didn’t get around to school. I knew it was going to be tough to get the work done. Today we will do yesterday’s work and maybe start today’s. I’m still planning on starting our read aloud and copywork. I have some tasks for work to complete, mostly phone calls which I loathe.
  16. Critterfixer, what project(s) are you working on? (If you don’t mind me asking)
  17. Yesterday was a success. The kids were more than happy to do their math. They wanted more subjects, so I think I’ll throw in a read aloud and copywork tomorrow. I still need to figure out language arts for the 10yo and science for both. Today I was out all day. I plan to do school after dinner.
  18. Hi can I join? I’m planning on starting Math this week with the kids. Next week I’m adding in another subject. Today I need to get math materials gathered and goals set for the week.
  19. My husband and I love to eat out. We both are home all day, and it’s not uncommon for us to grab a quick lunch or dinner because it’s so much easier than taking the time to cook a meal. Add in teenagers and adult children with work schedules and a social life and one younger picky eater, and I feel unable to plan meals because I don’t know who will be eating on a given day, and I’m making two meals a lot of the time because of the picky eater. One more challenge is that my DH works out in the evenings and likes to eat a protein heavy meal after his workouts. For those of you who have it together in the kitchen, how do you not spend all your time cooking and prepping (and cleaning) healthy, non-processed food? I feel like I was absent on the day they taught this stuff.
  20. This workout journal has many ways to track fitness and health. I love it. Workout Journal (Diary, Notebook, Fitness) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1441312293/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_dKEvBb83XN3D7
  21. Another vote for Wheatbread by Behr. We’ve used this paint on walls and always get compliments.
  22. She had a CAT scan which showed no abnormalities. Would a kidney stone show up on the CAT scan? No, her LMP was on the 13th, and symptoms began on the 17th.
  23. We left the ER with a diagnosis of constipation. I guess we will see if that’s it.
  24. My young adult child has had severe back pain since Sunday, occasional vomiting, and briefly had a couple of UTI symptoms that went away after a couple of days on antibiotics. The urine culture came back negative, and a cat scan did not show any abnormalities with any abdominal organs, though it did show constipation. The ER doctor ordered a dose of Toradol and something for her constipation. This same child has another medical mystery that we haven’t figured out. She has excessive discharge that tends to irritate her cervix to the point of bleeding. All testing has come back negative for yeast, bacterial infections, etc. she has been seen by three different doctors for this with no answers. Is there anything you can think of that we could be missing?
  25. I think I understood what you meant. Effeminate isn’t a compliment, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be an insult either or have a negative connotation.
