  1. Below are my rambling thoughts. The first paragraph is nothing but long-winded background info about my son. Feel free to skip it ? Ever since my son was a baby, he has not liked sudden drops. He used to startle and tense his body at each step as I carried him downstairs. He was the only one in our family who disliked amusement parks, refusing to ride even the most tame rides. Over the past few years, DS started tolerating slower rides like the barnstormer at Disney World antd Dumbo the Flying Elephant. This past summer he became a roller coaster riding fanatic. Since our trip to Orlando this summer DS has taken an interest in building roller coasters on roblox. He excitedly calls me over to check out his newest rides each time he plays. This says a lot about my quiet, reticent little guy. So it occurred to me that I could incorporate this into our science studies, and we could learn some basic physics. But - I don’t want to take all the fun out of it either. Has anyone done a unit on roller coasters? Besides strewing a few books, I’ve got nothing planned. Are there any resources for this topic? Back to roblox, one of the problems with the game he plays is that the laws of physics don’t seem to apply, lol. On the other hand, it’s fun for him. Oh, and if anyone knows of a roller coaster equivalent to geotrax, please let me know.
  2. Yes, but our state (Texas) doesn’t require us to register our homeschool.
  3. In Texas, all homeschools are considered private schools. I’m not sure where the OP lives, but her state could have similar laws.
  4. When I homeschooled my older kids, this was rarely the case. But with my younger ones, I would say that 75% say they have or know someone who has homeschooled. Most of the rest appear to have a favorable opinion.
  5. I need to plan this week. Seriously, I need to stop procrastinating and plan the darn week! Good luck Critterfixer! I’m in awe of all you do.
  6. I don’t know why, but this made me laugh because I can relate so well. My kids wear Halloween and Christmas shirts year round. I can totally picture the woman asking your son about his shirt. How did he react?
  7. This has been my experience with 90% of other homeschoolers we’ve met. What’s up with that? OP, we tend to get those questions around this time of year. The other day our server asked if the kids started school yet and if they’d met their teacher yet. My kids snickered and answered yes to both questions.
  8. I need to have that problem! I always forget to buy socks when we need them. Now’s a great time to buy socks, with back to school sales going on, lol.
  9. Because she’s an adult and has decided to get a feel for what they say before throwing in the towel. She says the majority of her previous instructors would have been okay with the absences. I’ve reeled her in so much this far, but ultimately she needs to make the decision.
  10. I do the same with school supplies. It’s come in handy so many tines when my older kids ask for a folder, dividers, notebooks, etc., and I just tell them to look through my stash. I buy the supplies year round when I see stuff on clearance but especially around back to school time. It’s just as much a thrill to see the supplies get used as it is to buy them. Office and home improvement stores are my favorite stores behind book stores. I’m a weirdo I know.
  11. DD has drafted an email explaining the situation. In it, she has a sentence that states something along the lines of, If these two absences will have a detrimental effect on my overall grade, please let me know so that I can rethink my decision. She also asks her professors the best way to keep up if they allow her to miss. I haven’t read the email yet, but we’ve discussed what she wants and needs to say. DD will either change her flight to come home before school begins or not go, depending on the responses. She may also withdraw early and skip this semester - my least favorite option. DD would then have to make up the classes missed over the summer.
  12. I tried that and ended up with terrible pain on top of both feet. I don’t know what I did wrong, but the problem went away a few days after tying shoes my usual way.
  13. The question about labor was asked out of curiosity; it didn’t factor into the decision. DD emailed her professors. At the very least, they will know that she intends to attend. If I could make the decision for her, I’d have her come home before school starts. It’s just not my decision.
  14. Thats a shame. I really wanted to like it.
  15. Our latest experience: We stayed at one of the three hotels (Portofino) that gave us express passes for free. We got five day passes with their buy three, get five promotion, but we only ended up using the three we paid for. This was our third or fourth visit, so we knew which rides and experiences we wanted to go to. We were able to cover both parks in one day with express passes. The second day we went to the water park. They sell express passes for that park as well, and it allowed us to ride just about every ride we wanted. Last year we were able to ride about four rides in one day without the express pass, and we still had a blast. The third day was a short day. We spent three hours at Islands of Adventure before we had to go home. I think you’re on the right track by getting the park to park tickets on the third day. The first time we visited, we did exactly that, and it worked out great. With it being December, I’m not sure if the water park is even open or if you want to go, but it is so much fun. I can’t speak about wait times without the universal express passes. I was always told that staying on site was the best way to experience the parks in a short amount of time, so that is what we have always done. I can think of a few random tips right off the top of my head. At Islands of Adventure, head left if you have older kids and right if you have younger ones. Keep in mind that the restaurants close a lot earlier than the parks, so eat early if you plan on dining there. If you stay on site, take advantage of early park hours. At Islands of Adventure there is a discovery center near the Jurassic Park ride that closes early. My son enjoyed it a lot. If I think of anything else, I’ll add to this post.
  16. How many days do you plan to spend at the parks? We visited a few weeks ago, another peak season. I have advice, just need to know the specifics.
  17. I haven’t had time to play with the app much, but I was thinking that there must be a way to end a task early and move on to the next one. I noticed that it’s easy to add minutes to tasks but no way that I can see to subtract time. That’s a definite drawback. ETA: I saw a review where a subscriber said she was disappointed with the pro version because the recurring tasks were only a list and had to be manually entered. Maybe I misunderstood, or maybe she didn’t know how to use that feature.
  18. Update: DD and I looked at the calendar and talked about the attendance policy. She decided to fly back the Tuesday after Labor Day. This means that she will miss one week of classes. DD is going to email her professors to explain the situation and ask about working ahead so that she won’t fall too far behind. The flight change was only $14, thankfully. Thanks for your advice and opinions.
  19. I agree. Thank you for sharing. Watching the video, the app looked so familiar to me. I looked through my purchased app but still couldn’t find it. Bummer. Pen, how do you like the sloth app so far?
  20. It’s complicated. The original agreement was for us to split the cost 50/50 (no financial aid) while she’s in community college, and 80/20 (possible financial aid) once she transfers to a 4 year university. It is important to us that our kids put some of their own money towards school because we want them to feel ownership of their education. What ended up happening is that we paid for all of her school last year, and she covered the cost of books. This summer she informed me that she was paying the full amount this semester to make up for last year.
  21. The policy is that they can miss the equivalent of two weeks of classes. The friend is 1cm dilated, 75% effaced and baby is in station -3. How imminent is labor?
  22. That’s a great idea worth looking into. She tried getting into mini-mester classes (I really dislike that term) that begins in October, but none were applicable to her degree plan. Someone asked upthread. DD thinks she wants to be a teacher but isn’t sure. Due to this indecision, she’s taking as many basic courses as possible.
  23. I’m sorry, I forgot to mention that the mother-in-law will be there as well. The relationship between mom and MIL is strained though.
  24. Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I’m going to find the school’s rules on missed classes and go from there.
