  1. For my DS his reactions include not digesting any food he eats, so huge weight loss is a mjor problem. He also was a ble to tell us from a young age that certain foods made his head feel funny. And will often say that his brain hurts. I would encourage her to listen to her body, we have also made deals in the past, try going without for a specific time, and then allow her to cheat with lots of talks about how she feels after. This helped us with DS more then anything. He now refuses any food that he doesnt know, because he doesnt like how it makes him feel. It's interesting to me how many kids with gastrointestinal allergic reactions also have sensory issues, I wonder how they are related?
  2. I am looking at LA stuff for next year, and I looked this over yesterday, but am looking for information from users. How long does it take to do the full program everyday? Is there more writing then just writing the phonograms? ( I looked at the sample and this what they had them doing). I am looking for a program that has phonetic spelling, grammar, writing, and reading comprehension, but more then just comprehension, also discussing the books. DS is a great reader, but a struggler in spelling. He has done some Wwe 2, and almost no grammar. Would the third grade guide still be appropriate? any information about the program would be greatly appreciated! TIA!
  3. My son is younger then yours, but I have found a similar problem here. We have added a page a day from a math mammoth topic book to help review things. So right now we are working through multiplication and division 2, addition and subtraction 3, and place value 3. We finished up SM 3 two weeks ago, but are not moving forward until we complete multiplication and division 3, add and sub 4 and place value 4. When he was working all the programs together, he would do a page from one of the topic books, and then the SM lesson. It worked well for us.
  4. This! My 7 year old just made us lunch. He made himself a veggie salad tomato, cucs, chicken and dressing, cut up cucs for his sister and fried me three eggs. Teach them knife safety, and how to safely use the stove! Big saver for me last time I was pregnant, and will be even better this time! Easy things to teach are eggs, quesdillas, canned soup, grilled cheese. They add veg and fruit andnthey are done. Have them take turns making lunch for everyone! We keep meals simple. Dinners are breakfast for dinner, beans and rice, one big meat meal ( roast, chicken, lots of fish, and veg) then a stir fry with leftovers, and then leftovers the rest of the week.
  5. I would consider geography instead of history pick a country a week or month and then learn some words, make some food, make a flag, read some books, lots of fun
  6. You can also approach the spank in ping in another way. We talked about doing what is right regardless of the consequence. For instance standing up to a bully could get you beat up, but you should do it anyway. We also tied it into the revolutionary war, people stood up for what was right even though many were hurt or killed. It's important to look for the life lesson rather then just seeing the surface in many of the FIAR books. I haven't encountered any that promote abuse, although they do not rule out books just because of violence.
  7. I could have written your post! Right down to the same age kids! I have found that including DD is what works for us. So during copy work she gets markers and paper, during math she plays with math manipultives, when DS reads to himself, I read to her, and during read alouds she sits with us. She also has a snack if she gets bored. We Lso have rotating toy bins, I only get them out during school time, and I change them monthly. I don't have a Playpen, and nowhere to put one, we live in an rv. She doesnt really nap, never has, and wants to be in on the action. So we let her. She sits at the table almost the entire time during school. Hope that helps some, I just keep reminding myself that it will get easier as she can do more stuff with us, someday she will play alone, someday she will not eat the play dough, someday she wont color on the walls, and someday she won't need me at all, so today and everyday I will let her join us.
  8. I have really enjoyed this thread as well. Thank you to all the posters. The above really resonates with me. I kept plugging all the curriculum I thought I needed in to a schedule and it kept coming out with about 5 hours. I mean really 5 hours a day in third grade?! Simple , thoughtful and challenging! I think I will print that out to keep with me as I redo next year for us. Thank you!
  9. I was also feeling the drag too! Things that have helped: Extremely little screen time In th beginning I had to come up with project ideas to get him started You have to put up with a certain amount of mess. Projects and rabbit trails can be longer term. It helped to have a designated area where I can shut the door. The biggest for me was dropping the 4 year history/science cycle. Now we do five in a row. We were bored with the same subject all the time I also added specific art classes to help us get more used to using different materials. This helped a lot! Really opened his eyes to ideas! Over all it was a severe cut in actual school work, limiting screen time, and being willing to have big messes. It's been a great change for us, school is flowing so well, and he is excited and happy again!
  10. DD is 17 months, she isn't talking either. We have da for dad, ma for mom, and Buh for baby. That's it. My ped wanted 5 words at 15 months, she had none I convinced him to wait until 18 months, but he said he would want 15 words then. I doubt we make it to 15. We plan on having her evaluated then. She doesnt repeat anything, ever, for anyone. Follow your gut, if you think he needs an eval, then get it.
  11. We eat lots of beans and rice, I buynthe rice and beans in bulk from azure standard, and I buy my fruit and veggies from bountiful baskets.org, they are very inexpensive, and great quality. I can keep our grocery bill to about 65 a week for the 3 and a half of us! My kids eat what I put out or they don't eat. We do lots of different bean dishes, I have a cookbook called 365 bean and grain dishes or something like that. You really have to change your mindset, we eat to live not live to eat. I have to put the baby to bed, but I will link some favorites later!
  12. That is what I looked at last night. It looks like Saxon will work, the complaint with Saxon seems to be that it lacks word problems, so I could use SMs CWP and BA on Fridays like we have been, and use Saxon the rest. I will give him the placement test on Monday. Thank you for your help!
  13. Prairie- That is what I have done, we havent left a topic until the process you described has been completed. And yet this weeks review was a disaster. He couldn't remember anything. It's like it's there when we do it, but it's gone as soon as we change topics. I can't figure out how to make it last long term. What do you think about repeating this years math using Rightstart c-d? It would be a different way of doing the same thing? So pricey though!
  14. Ds has always been good at math, he has been working about a year ahead. The last 6 months have been very rough. The last 4 weeks of SM 2b and most of 3a, he has really struggled with. We have been taking it slow, and I have read every math thread I could find, but we are still struggling along. I hope someone can help us out. Here is what we have done: When we came to multiplication again in 3a and we struggled to remember the facts we did flash cards, went back through the section in 2b, worked through MM multiplication 1 and 2, did the intensive practice, and the cwp. It seemed as though we were good, so we moved on, and did the fraction section, and he had no problems at all. Then we went back and did the money section, suddenly he couldn't subtract at all. So again we went back to 2a and did it again, did MM sub, and worked the subtraction facts again. We finished the section, and when faced with a review today he couldn't subtract again at all. He got them all wrong, he also got all the division problems wrong, and in the fractions couldn't remember how to make common denominators. I am at such a loss. I don't know what to do. I feel like we have beaten these subjects to death. But he still doesnt get it. What do I do now?
  15. I used RS A with ds at 3, he loved it, and I think he learned a lot. It went great! Just take it slow.
  16. I am looking at books for DS for Christmas, and have settled on the hobbit, and am looking at the neverending story, I don't have time to preread right now. I am wondering if it has any sexual content? I don't mind falling in love, or kissing. But I would not choose the book if there are any other sexual references. DS is 7 and reads at about a 6-7th grade level. I am looking for 3 books for Christmas for pleasure reading. He has read all of harry potter, and Narnia. He likes to read magic/fantasy but not super scarey books. if you have any other ideas for books they would be much appreciated! TIA!
  17. I cried, but something's up...did you see how he kept looking in his rearview mirror at the end? I think Daryl will lose it personally. And those girls. It can't be the end of carol. It just can't.
  18. Yes! I would love to come! This would be so awesome! Can I please have an invite?
  19. I had to rewind it I was so shocked when carol said yes. Wow just wow!
  20. Our goal has never been college. Our goal has always been to raise educated, useful, happy, productive adults. This may or may not include college. Our ds knows that the goal is to find work that pays the bills and makes him happy. He also knowsvwe won't be paying for college, so he had better need that degree. We have also made it clear that if he does go to college, he also should have a skill that is useful. Again the goal is to raise productive, happy useful adults. Not everyone needs to go to college. We will always need mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians. These jobs can pay the bills, and can make some people very happy! My dh loves working on cars, always has, and we more then support ourselves on his salary. He would never have been happy in a office, he needs and wants to work with his hands. I know many people who classically educate in real life that have similar goals. It has only been here that I see such a college push.
  21. We sort by color and then into basic bricks and specials. These go into drawer carts, then we use fishing tackle boxes for wheels, minifigs, windows and such. It makes it much easier to find pieces!
  22. Michonne, michonne, michonne, I was so sad, I cried. I think it's 50/50 between the doc and the guy stuck under the shelves, I was so glad to see sherriff Rick again too. But michonne, ohh I so want to know now!
  23. We have a 37 foot fifth wheel. We also removed the couch from the slide, but put in a Lego table with drawers under it. We run several Lego teams, so they have priority over beds at this point. Ds sleeps in a "cave" at the foot if the main bed in the back, DD sleeps with me, and dh sleeps on the futon out in the main area. It works. We do have a lot in here, but I think it would be easier with less, but fir now, it is what it is, we have been here just over a year, and will be here through early spring it looks like, we make it work.
  24. Here is my working list. Most of these I will Ned to pre read, but some were already on on approved list Seabird Moby dick 21 gallons Baby island Robinson crusoe Carry on mr. Bowditch Treasure island Island of the blue dolphins Paddle to the sea Sign of the beaver Indian captive Mary jemison Tree in the trail Dear America Little house on the prairie Seaman Matchlock gun Minn of the mississippi Huck Finn Tom Sawyer Journey tom the river sea Swift river My goal is 4 books for him and two read alouds, and then I will fill in with non fiction for the rest. According to the beautiful feet guide each holling book should take about 9 weeks. If I need to add more fiction I think it will just be other good fiction. Not tied to the holling books. Does anyone know if there are annotated versions of the holling books?
