  1. How do you know I am not struggling with this myself? Does it never occur to you that when someone posts something, it is because they desperately need help and have no one irl they feel they can talk about it safely without being judged?
  2. Thank you, Ann. What you said is exactly why I posted the article. There are different paths for different people. There is never a one formula fit all type of path. We need to see the stories and understand how people arrive at where they are now. What is a good, valid path for one person may not work for another person. The more diverse, valid paths we see, the more we can help our children. It is when only one path is touted as THE path that harm can be done. As homeschoolers especially, we educate our children with all kinds of different philosophy and we choose all different materials to teach our children. For their medical needs, diverse paths also work for diverse children.
  3. Thank you to those who said kind words. I am done here. Let this thread die.
  4. Thank you! I cannot believe how mean people can be. They must be very unhappy so they would blurt out such mean words towards another person.
  5. I have been a long time WTM forum member since 2006 when I started homeschooling, with another username. Then in 2019, my youngest went to a private high school for years. My oldest son was homeschooled all the way. My youngest is now a PSEO dual enrollment student at our state university as a homeschool senior. I posted the link of the article because of what I see in schools as a teacher and what I see among teens in my friends’ circle. It is a real concern for me. I have no need to stir whatever pot you meant. Rather than feeling mad, I really feel sorry for people who can not spare an ounce of kindness, either towards a new member or a long term member.
  6. I asked this same question a while back. Today finally my son finished his part of common app and I got invited to be the counselor. My situation is weird in that ds homeschooled until 8th grade and attended a private high school for 3 years and for his senior year now he’s DEing ag our state university as a homeschooler. I feel writing counselor letter for me is a huge challenge since I didn’t homeschool him. But I think I will have to do it. I guess no one here has similar situation now, but I am just looking for some encouragement. Thanks for listening.
  7. My son is trying to write his college app essay. I told him it is supposed to show his personality and character, something the reader can know him a little more than what his transcript shows. He shared with me he was struggling with making it personal. I have some ideas but he is unwilling to use them. So I am thinking of hiring a college app essay coach for him. Has any of you done this? How much should I pay for an hour? I am thinking about 3 hour-long sessions. Please share if you know. Thanks!
  8. His counselor was very hostile when I contacted her. Basically since my son withdrew from the school, she sounded like she had nothing to do with us not able to find or use the Naviance account linked to the school.
  9. Congrats! Well done! My son is trying to write the essay. I have a few suggestions but he would not take them. I stressed with him an essay is to show who he is as a person. But he wants to write about agriculture and what he read about a Japanese farmer does to not deplete the soil as industrialized farming would do. I think it is not personal enough, especially he has not done any farming practice himself. Sigh.
  10. We would like ds17 to self study personal finance in the summer. If you know a short and fast course or a book, please let me know. Thanks!
  11. As I said in my first post, my son homeschooled until end of 8th grade and then went to a private high school for 3 years. Now that he chooses to go to DE at our state university for his 12th grade, he has to drop out of the private school and become a homeschooler again. For college application I need to be his high school counselor and write counselor rec letter. How do you guys write your dc rec letters? This is what I am nervous about. i didn’t have to write one for my oldest son when he applied to the state university because it was not required.
  12. I just got over Covid. Two weeks for me. High fever, sore throat, inflamed nose, followed by coughing. Low energy the whole time. I didn’t see a doctor. I just took D3, zinc, super C, and Tylenol for fever. My husband got it from me 3 days after I tested positive. He had low grade fever and low energy and later cough. He didn’t see the doctor either. We are both well now. Our two sons in their late teens did not get it from us despite we are all home all day because older ds and dh work from home and younger ds is done with school for summer break now. You will get better soon.
  13. Last night DH and Ds and I talked about his school choice. He is sure he wants to go to DE full time. So now we need to notify his private school that he will leave the school. He will participate in the school’s debate team in the fall still. he will applied to another college for online classes in case he cannot get in the more competitive classes at the state university. Our oldest ds only applied to the state university and got in with no problem as a homeschooler with two years of DE at two colleges. ‘Now that he made up his mind, I think I feel less nervous about his college application. I will try to take a look at his private school Naviance and start having ds ask his teachers for rec letters soon. For the transcript, I will also included Spanish, Latin, and geometry he did at home prior to high school. Thanks a lot for your encouragement and input. It’s really helpful.
  14. My son was homeschooled for elementary and middle school years until he went to a private high school. Now he is accepted by the dual enrollment program of the state university 2 miles from our home. I lean towards him dropping out of the high school (because of cost) and going full time to the dual enrollment classes as a homeschooler. I wonder if anyone has done this. How do you make the transcript? Who do you ask for recommendation letters? There are more questions, but I will just start from here. Thanks!
