  1. Also, in Iowa! Welcome to the Hive!
  2. I am exploring an idea with some friends about using TOG so that we can do the discussions with our older children together. I am the only one of the three of us that has experience with TOG. I'd like to hear how you got it started, how it affected your friendships, how you shared the workload and planning, how you decided on a location, how often you meet, what you do with younger siblings, and anything else you feel of value to share.
  3. This is why I was hesistant to buy it. It looks wonderful, but I seriously doubt is would used. I would also like to hear if those that bought it though are using it, and if they thought is was worth the investment.
  4. I'm interested to hear what others say. This is one of my goals for ds for next year too. He also will be 6th grade. I'm debating on whether or not an online class might be a way to help with this. That way he has to be accountable to someone else besides me.
  5. We use the first FLL series and then move into Rod and Staff, WWE, SOTW, and WWS. PHP products have been one of the highlights of our homeschool.
  6. Monday: 40 min. pilates and 20 min. yoga Tues: 3 mile run
  7. It's been a while, but I have seen that chart before. Maybe back, a couple of years ago when I began researching Latin for my first one. Now, I'm thinking about my middle one. He is a different kind of learner. I think LFC might be too much for him. That's what brought this question up for me again. I'll print that chart out and have a good look at it again. Thanks.
  8. I ran 2 miles in the snow yesterday. It is the first time I've ever done that, and I really enjoyed myself. The sidewalks are still a little snowy in places, but it was manageable. I'm hoping to schedule in a couple runs this week. I haven't been out for a run since the blizzard a few weeks ago.
  9. This probably is here somewhere, but I've done a search and come up with not much more than I already knew. What Latin programs are parts to whole? I know Lively Latin and Latina Christiana are. But is there anything else considered parts to whole? Just wondering.
  10. We have snap circuits. I hadn't thought about adding to those. Good idea. We have a paper airplane book and a launcher. They love that. In reality, my kids have too much. Sigh. I like the juggling book idea and Backyard Ballistics is a good idea too. Keep them coming!
  11. Ds hasn't really asked for anything. I need some ideas. He has a bizillion Legos and would always welcome another set, but isn't asking specifically for any. I am just at a loss. So far, I have a family game that he is included on and a few stocking stuffers. Help me out! He's 10 almost 11. Toys or game ideas for winter days are especially welcome.
  12. I love SWB's writing program. My oldest has done WWE 1-4 and is now working on WWS 1. You could easily have your ds do WWS on the computer.
  13. For me, it wasn't worth the price. I bought a subscription and haven't used it like I thought I would. I definately haven't gotten out of it what I paid for it.
  14. I'd move on to Saxon 1 when done. We use Saxon 1 for Kindergarten here, 2 in 1st, and so on.
  15. We've used both. We went spent 4 years with SL, moved to TOG (for 18 months) so I could combine my kids in a time period and not read two cores, and now we are back with SL reading two cores. Combining them worked well in theory, but not so much in practice. I was reading just as much with TOG as with SL. I spent the summer planning TOG ahead of time, so that it was open and go for me. But the actual day-to-day of TOG was just as much reading as two SL cores. We enjoyed TOG, learned a ton, and I fully intended to stick with it. BUT feedback from my kids is important. For various reasons they asked to return to SL. My younger son hated history with TOG. I wanted the magic of history to be there for him like it was with my oldest. I spent all of last year thinking history is just not his thing. Since we switched back, he loves history now. TOG books were just dry for him. I thought they were great selections. He did not. My oldest ds liked TOG well enough. But he missed me reading his history to him and snuggling for read alouds. Since coming back SL, our homeschool is much more relaxed and enjoyable. We spend time reading by the fireplace with hot chocolate or taking a book with us on a bike ride and reading while we take a break and the kids climb a tree. For some reason, SL helps me enjoy my kids more, and they enjoy that part of our day much more.
  16. My dd is loving it! She is only on the lesson 7, but she looking forward to her reading time each day. She really likes the games matching the rhyming words with Ziggy. I'm looking forward to a great year with her.
  17. We just moved to Iowa in January. I came from a non-reporting state and was a bit overwhelmed by idea of reporting. I have chosen to standardized test. Here's why: 1) When I called the school district to ask about how to go about getting a supervising teacher, they told me the didn't know how to go about doing that. They had no recommendations of teachers that even did it. I was on my own for finding one. Well, I'm new here. I don't know a lot of people, so for me to track down someone to be my supervising teacher was just more than I had time to do. Plus, I would have to pay him/her. I don't want to fork out more money for something. 2) Portfolios overwhelmed me. 3) The Christian School here takes on homeschoolers and allows them to test with their kids. I just take my kids, pay for the test (which is $30/child), and then turn in their scores. I've already contacted the school to let them know I want them to test there. It sounds like the simplest of the three to me. Feel free to PM me if you want. I know it's tough moving to a new place.
