Hooks and aid- how does it work?
mermaidkitchen replied to mermaidkitchen's topic in The College Board
Warren Wilson is not an option. My oldest had a good friend who had a very bad experience there. -

That’s a good list. Does anyone have suggestions for colleges that are a bit larger that might meet close to need? -

We’ve already completed the fafsa. Our EFC is $3000 but I can’t find schools whose net price calculator is less than $30000 -

Well that’s sad. Not much of a “college” experience. And he’s worked so hard. -

I can’t figure out how to identify a financial safety. I can afford ~$20000 a year but they a seem to cost way more than that. I don’t know how to figure this out. -
I’m pretty sure my kid with a weighted gpa of 3.9 could get into a reasonable school but what determines merit aid? I’m seeing most colleges will cost $30-$60k but there’s no way I can pay that. I’ve done the net cost calculator cut it seems there is additional merit aid that could come. How do I know or have a reasonable guess of how much merit aid? Also, would starting a competing program for our town be a compelling enough hook to get into a SLAC?

I have a 17 year old who is finished with high school and applying for colleges. I'm helping him look for experiences that would get him out into the big world. A lot of programs are geared toward 18+ so he does not qualify for those but if you have had a good experience with an 18+ program that would be good to hear about too. Thanks for help!

In my state there is an exception for homeschool students. -

When is he officially done with high school? He got his GED last year, but we were considering this year his final year of high school while he takes some cc classes and some home classes. -

I guess to the point, do most schools that a homeschool gpa of 3.8 the same as they’d treat a public or private school gpa? Should we be targeting “alternative” schools or regular schools that would accept a 3.8 student. -
DS has a 3.9 GPA in his homeschool classes. He did a pretty rigorous workload but not very many outside classes. He has 10 credits from cc with an overal GPA of 3.75. He had a rigorous full time EC that he stopped junior year and a very involved job senior year. He has not taken the SAT or ACT, has no AP scores or anything like that. I'm wondering where he could get in under these circumstances and where he could get aid. Any advice welcome!!!!!!
