  1. A parenting coach!? I'll come tell you what to do for free!:D
  2. Rainbow Science would also work. It is meant to be independent and comes with an excellent teacher's guide which will help you know what is going on!
  3. In CA, if you are registering as a private school, you are required to teach history and science. How you decide to do that is up to you. You do not need a curriculum to teach either and do not need to share your curriculum choices when registering. Simply list the classes you are teaching. And welcome!
  4. I'm sorry this is the way it was for you. And I'm sure their are others who have had/ are having this same experience, but I don't think it is the way it works for most students. Currently, I have two students I homeschool and two students attending a bricks and mortar school. Teachers teach there. Some classes are better than others. Some homework assignments are better than others. Yes, my two at school spend a lot of time on homework--sometimes several hours an evening. That is what we signed up for. My dd is taking 5 AP classes. With that commitment comes lots of homework! I don't think doing away with homework all together is a good idea. I do think at the elementary level most homework could go away. But at a certain point individual work needs to happen. Perhaps, Mr. French President could instead figure out how to "retrain" those parents who can't or won't help their kids. Would people accept a law for mandatory parenting classes?!
  5. I watched the whole first season one day! It is bad! But I just couldn't stop myself! And yes, what people choose to spend their money on is amazing! Can you imagine if that 50,000 could have been put in a college fund now! for when the little girl is old enough to go to college!
  6. I need to put together a savory vegan finger food buffet for 10 women. Any ideas? My thoughts: veggies and hummus biscuits (can biscuits be made vegan?) with chutney ???? This will be at lunch time.
  7. I don't have an ipad or ipod and the snipping is so much easier than a screen shot on the computer.
  8. I second Dick Blicks for quality art supplies. Having quality stuff really does make a difference in the experience of creating art. Here are a few kits to get you started: Just Art Set Big Art Set Vintage Dot Paint Set At your dd's age, she also might like a craft kit. Here are a few fun ones I found at Dick Blicks: Artterro Creative Art Kit Marionette Kit Thanks for letting me shop for you!
  9. Thanks so much for all the answers! Where do I find the accessories? I can't find the snipping tool. Not sure if I'm looking in the right place.
  10. I would like to post a picture of one of my pinterest boards on my blog. Anyone have any ideas of how to make this work?
  11. I had one daughter that just couldn't seem to memorize her multiplication facts, so we set aside her other math and used the worksheets and wrap-ups for a few weeks until she had her facts down. With my other kids, I just used the wrap-ups along with our regular math.
  12. Here is my wrap-up of the week. I've made a goal to write everyday this month if anyone wants to read any of the other posts from this week.
  13. Jennifer, Are you interested in using it with a history focus or as a science program? If you are planning to use it for history, I would use it just like any other history text. Read, discuss, take notes, write, add dates to timeline, ect. If you want to use it as a science program, I suggest you use the Quest Guides. Here is a review I've written that covers what the Quest Guides includes. http://missmoe-thesearethedaysofmylife.blogspot.com/2011/02/teacher-and-student-quest-guides-for.html
  14. :iagree: I chose your second option, but I still feel we study in a classical manner though we don't follow the sequence from TWTM.
  15. I feel your pain Bethany. I was/am in Person A's situation--except it is a BIL instead of a child. Here is my take on the situation. The children at home are young right now and it is possible to shelter them. I worked hard to do the same thing. Now my kids are all teenagers. They are aware of what is going on. They have seen the relationship while at other relatives' homes during holidays, ect. Something my dh and I have had to work real hard at doing is being open to talking about what they are aware of. AFter most family functions we have an open discussion about the family. We talk about loving people and accepting their choices while making our own choices based on what we believe. It's been especially hard on me to be able to do that. But I need to trust that my children's testimonies will help them to make good choices. And if they don't, they need to know I will not love them any less. Just as my Heavenly Father does not love me any less when I sin. Is Person A going to be able to talk about this person and their choice in a loving kind manner when their children become aware of the relationship? And I don't mean that kind and loving needs to be accepting of the choice. I ask this because I think that rejecting this child in this manner affects those other children seeing this rejection. It closes doors of communication with all the children. How is Person A going to react when other children make choices that differs from Person A's? I maybe totally off base and Person A may have a good relationship outside their home. And if that is the case I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions.
  16. I hope he doesn't run with scissors while wearing a kilt! :w00t:
  17. I have two pairs. A pair of wedges and a pair of mules. I wear them with jeans every once in a while. I also wear them with gray, black, and purple skirts or dresses.
  18. We read out loud together. We start with http://www.studentnewsdaily.com/. From there we usually search for other articles pertaining to what we read as most articles need more background to understand. We also follow up on news articles that we've read in the past. One of my daughters has been interested in what has been happening in East Saint Louis, so we look that up most days. We discuss as we are reading. Then we each have a scrapbook that we add what we found interesting that day. That's all--easy!
  19. I have found I have to be there during school time to keep things going and on track---right now I am sitting on the couch after helping on dd with spelling and the other dd works on math nearby at the table. I've found it works best to have the kids work in our combo dining/living room. If they disappear to their room, napping and fooling around occur! I get up. Get my dds up. We each do our own thing for breakfast and getting ready for the day. The goal is at 8:00 we get started with school. We work on spelling for 30 minutes. Which means I work with each dd for 15 minutes. They work alone for 15 minutes. Next we work on current events for 30 minutes. This is also working together as we read and discuss and document interesting things we want to keep track of. Then 30 minutes of writing M-F. The girls mostly work alone, but I do check up on what they are doing. This morning during that time I cleaned the kitchen. Yesterday, I worked with one of my dds during that whole time because she needed my help with revising. My dds are taking an online math class, so they take turns with the computer for one hour each day. While one is working on math, the other is reading for an hour. The girls need to know I am close by or they tend to lose focus, but I use that time to work out, clean, and work on laundry. And I reward myself with 15 minutes of computer time at this point in the day. Next we sit down for logic time. Sometimes I work with them the whole 30 minutes, but usually there is some kind of independent work, so I get them started with reading and discussion before they do that independent work. So again I may have a few minutes or not. If I do, then I get lunch started. After lunch is one hour of history time. Two days we sit down together and work for an hour. Three days they work on their own. On those days I might run an errand during lunch and history time. But I have realized after doing this a long time, that when I am gone work is not going to be done to the same level as it would be if I was close by. My kids tend to lose their focus when left alone. The rest of the afternoon differs according to the day. It differs according to our schedule but might include any combination of lit, grammar, and science. Those classes work like the ones I mentioned above. Some days I am very involved and some days I get them started while they work on their own. Of course, we switch things up from time to time (like today). For the most part I've learned I need to be close by, but can find pockets of time to work on other things around the house.
  20. Going to add that I actually don't buy very much at the grocery stores. I buy direct from farmers and participate in a co op.
  21. I rarely use laundry detergent. :001_smile: I do use a drop or two if something is stinky or a quite dirty.
  22. My understanding of the flea treatment you used is that it will disrupt the life cycle of the fleas that do get on your dogs. So those fleas on the dog will not be able to lay eggs that hatch. So yes, your dog will pick up fleas from your yard, but will not drop eggs in your house that will hatch. When we had fleas, we were able to get rid of them without doing anything in house, but vacuuming and washing and drying things. I vacuummed three times a day for a few weeks and washed our bedding and stuffed animals.
