  1. I did try Beast Academy a year ago and she really didn't like it. Maybe I'll reintroduce it to see if something has changed.
  2. These are both very helpful. Thanks for the advice
  3. I'm looking for a new math curriculum for my daughter who recently turned 7. We stuck with Saxon 3 last year and she did really well with it, though I have been supplementing with some more advanced worksheets to keep her engaged. I have no concerns about her grasping the concepts in Saxon 5/4, she learned quite a few of the new concepts on her own already. What I am concerned about is the amount of writing required. Right now she says that Math is her favorite subject and I REALLY don't want to mess that up. We discourage screen time, but I'm thinking about giving letting her use Teaching Textbooks, supplementing with math facts, and then giving her space to explore whatever else sounds fun to her. Does anyone have any experience with the program, or any other recommendations? Thanks!
  4. I'm thinking about using it to supplement my daughters math, but I'm not sure if it's worth the price. Has anyone used this?
  5. My daughter recently turned 7, and I let her test out of anything that she wants. If she already knows it then I don't need to teach it to her. If I'm worried about it then I just find ways to reinforce it. We're about 3/5 through Saxon 3. She's been able to multiply for some time, so there's no reason for us to do those lesson if she's not up for it. I have her do the end of lesson problems and then move on. That's what we did today. It's the same with language and reading in my mind. She reading the Harry Potter series right now. If she wants to read something below that level then great, but don't her to do it just to check a box.
  6. I wanted to follow up on this for anyone reading with a similar question. We went ahead with the Saxon 3 curriculum, but skipped ahead 30 lessons. Those were completely basic review. We're following the schedule now, but I ask her up front if she knows how to do the lesson. If she says no then we do the lesson. Most days she says yes and knocks out the lesson on her own in 5-10 minutes. Then we work on balance math, challenge math, or what ever else she's excited about that day (right now that's fractions, division, and double digit multiplication). I still don't know if this is the ideal course of action, but she is definitely making progress and the curriculum has me confident that at least she won't have any glaring holes in her math education when we change curriculum next year.
  7. @Dmmetler thanks for the heads up! How would you have altered it for your kid?
  8. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out Harder Math and Gifted Math.
  9. Thanks for all of the feedback. I kind of wish that I hadn't thought the Saxon 3 already. I think that I will skip a bit ahead and then take my time with Saxon 3 while supplementing with the Zaccaro and/or Balance Math to see if she takes to a different style of program. I'd rather know for sure that she likes it before changing the program completely.
  10. Hello, I'm a new homeschool parent this year and still sorting things out. Our oldest is 6, turning 7 in May. She is very into Math and enjoys Saxon. We just wrapped up Saxon 2 and it was engaging, but not overly challenging. She does a lot of conceptual work on her own with books from the library and she likes to work on independent work with worksheets, writing in chalk on the sidewalk, etc. It's play based, but she's working on basic Algebra, exponents, things like that. She's learned her multiplication facts up to 12's, but the higher numbers she uses skip counting. Looking at the new book it looks like a lot of the stuff, up to 1/2 of the book, is review of level 2 or stuff that she's learning on her own. I want to skip ahead to a place where she is engaged, but not over her head. Is anyone has experience with this I would love to know how it worked out. I want to stay with Saxon because she likes the format. I'm just afraid that she'll miss something in the 30 or so lessons that we'll skip ahead. Also, I'm aware that this is a good problem to have. Still, I want the best for my kids and I don't want her stuck on a manufactured timeline. Thanks!!
  11. My oldest daughter is 6 1/2 and we pulled her out of public school in the fall too. We opted for WWE and FLL and I've been really happy. We started in Sept and she'll finish up level 1 next month. We plan to use level 2 right after. She has lots of fun with it. Not sure what we'll do after that, but it's been great for her this year.
  12. Thanks for all of the replies and ideas. Based on this feedback I think we'll keep going with the level 3 curriculum, but not stress about timing or pace. At the moment I think as long as she's engaged, curious and being challenged I'm happy.
  13. We accidentally fell into homeschooling like a lot of families this year, but we're sticking with it long term after seeing the difference it has made for our little girls. One thing I'm starting to think about is our 6 year olds math curriculum. She will be finishing Saxon 2 next month and is working on multiplication, division, negatives, and fractions on her own. I'm not looking to push her too fast because she still young and math something that she excited about everyday. At the same time I don't want to hold her back and do months of review because of an arbitrary school/curriculum standard. My thought is that I should just start on on the Saxon 3 curriculum as soon as we finish level 2, and then take a break midway for whatever summer break we do. I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has experienced this with their own kids. Joshua Myers
