I think you could probably use R&S placement tests which are available for free download on Milestonebooks website to give you a general idea of where to begin. R&S has remedial reading/phonics that literally starts at the very beginning that you could breeze through until you figure out where he is. CLE Math uses the first light unit (workbook) of every grade to review the previous year, so if you buy just light unit 401, it will review everything from third grade.

I used CLE for years and what I discovered is that an all-in-one LA curriculum just isn't a good fit for my children, though it sure helped ME streamline! We switched to R&S and though many find it dull or plain, it works for us. I can and do choose to make it more fun by being creative and having games and activities beyond the curriculum that practice the skills being taught. I rarely find an all-in-one that is at the right learning level in all three main areas (grammar, writing, and spelling). R&S allows me to place them correctly without holding them back in any area they happen to be excelling in. For instance, my oldest sometimes needs to slow down in grammar to practice a skill longer in order to retain the information and we can do this without disrupting spelling quite easily. With CLE, we couldn't.

Is quiche considered vegetarian? I have never made quiche so I'm no help there. If eggs and cheese are both ok, you could always make a small breakfast casserole without meat in it and a larger one with the meat in it for the rest. Other ideas are a large bowl of mixed fruit and an assortment of muffins/sweet bread for everyone. That should satisfy all types.

Don't you know MATH is a very bad word!? Today, it took me two tries to get the correct answer on a math problem that I had the answer to in the TM. I was trying to show Oldest after he got the answer wrong. What's hilarious is we both got different wrong answers!

Now you know why I had to go back and reread stuff! 🤣

It wasn't hard hard. I just had to go back and reread a fair amount (which I rarely have to do) in order to clarify for Oldest and then do some serious review because it was a long chapter with a LOT to unpack. Grade 6, chapter 4: Verbs. We covered the 3 main principle parts, simple tenses, and perfect tenses. Once you figure out the relationship between them all, it isn't hard, but it's a bear getting there. (This should've been its own chapter, IMO, and I've made a note to do so in the future.) Then, keeping straight when an action verb is/isn't transitive, direct and indirect objects, linking verbs, and predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives. Once you've got it, you've really got it because not only do you have to define each part and use or identify each part correctly in a sentence, but you get to diagram it too!

Good morning! Sorry I've been on hiatus. There just hasn't been much time to ketchup or check in. We didn't take a break from school since the holidays were on Sundays. You know everything has gone sideways when math is suddenly easier than English. Seriously, I'm having a hard time keeping everything in this chapter straight! I understand it all, but it's a lot to take in, process, apply, and remember. I figure if I can't even keep it straight, we're not moving forward or it will just snowball later on. I believe that part of what makes a good teacher is recognizing when we don't know it all and slowing down to figure things out.

Make an S but do not wait, climb back up to make an 8. I learned the number 5 as a continuous stroke, too, but the top line was curved like a smile. Middle attempts to start 5 as one stroke because he is used to drawing the letter S. Unfortunately, his 5 ends up looking like an S so I teach the way R&S instructs in order to avoid confusion and I correct him every time so he will remember the correct starting point. He loves making 7s and says the rhyme as he draws them: Across the sky and down from Heaven, this is how to make a 7.

Consider this a blessing. Shoveling the driveway, scraping and brushing snow and ice off your vehicle, and then actually driving in the white stuff is not fun at all. Also: grocery cart wheels do not roll in snow.

Snow is best enjoyed from inside a warm home in a snuggly blanket while looking out the window with a warm cup of coffee, tea, cocoa, or cider in your hands. Undisturbed snow is really a thing of beauty, especially if you can see it at sunrise or sunset.

Yes. I can and do make cake from scratch but this was a special request from Oldest. Sorry, I can control the size of the coffee but not the snow, much to my children's dismay.
