  1. Jawdrop. That's a lot of pies. I struggled with my pie crust this year. Not sure why, but it just wasn't rolling all nice and pretty like it usually does. Oh well, good thing my family cares more about taste than looks. One by one, they keep taking turns looking at and smelling the pies. 😂
  2. Yes, the difference in age level from the beginning to the end of the series is why I never used MOH. It just makes it hard to cycle back through when the target age doesn't always line up. We used Notgrass (middle grades, not elementary) at half pace starting in fourth grade. We read the lessons and discussed the questions from the lesson reviews, did the map assignments, and did some of the family activities. I also bought a ton of age appropriate literature books to fit the time periods/subject matter. It was great. We also used the tests from the workbook or lesson book depending on the age because I needed something to grade for reporting to our district/state.
  3. I remember you recommending this when my oldest was that age and it was a lightbulb moment for me. I grabbed a plastic sheet protector and layed it over the textbook page and had him work the problems that way with dry erase pens which he thought was pretty cool. We slowly worked our way up to more of the problems set up correctly and worked out on paper throughout the course of the school year.
  4. If your 7th grader does well with CLE, you may prefer a spiral math curriculum. I believe Foerster is mastery. Saxon is spiral. I personally am really enjoying looking through Jacob's, but DS doesn't care for it at all.
  5. I would highly urge you to reconsider jumping from R&S grade 3 (previous edition) to CLE 4. That is a huge leap. For reference, my oldest used CLE through grade 3 and was in tears within the first month of CLE 4 (textbook) because A) it moves so much faster, B) there weren't enough examples to get the hang of anything before moving on to another new thing, and C) the step up in written output. We switched to R&S 3 to get him up to speed with the amount of written output, learn how to set up a page, ect while gaining confidence because he already knew the math. We haven't looked back and are now in R&S 7 with plans to move on to Foerster after R&S 8.
  6. I downloaded the older textbook (1979, I think) and am reading through it as a refresher. I'm really enjoying some of the set IV problems.
  7. Oh my! I just looked at our English lesson for tomorrow and wouldn't you know it: The lesson is about proofreading and covers the new punctuation marks. How did I miss this? The information was right there the whole time. 🤦
  8. You're right. I thought about it and decided that yes we're doing all the composition assignments in the order of the book.
  9. @Nm. I wouldn't assume that writing is being explicitly taught just because OP stated they are using R&S English. There are many on here who only use R&S English for grammar and choose to skip the writing assignments in favor of another writing program. OP, I don't have any suggestions for writing as I myself am struggling to teach writing using R&S English. I will mention, though, that R&S does have science that is inexpensive and low in experiments. My Oldest has found R&S science very interesting. We use it a grade level ahead so we can finish the whole set before high school.
  10. Yes, I saw that price on Amazon recently and nearly fell over. That same solution key and matching student textbook are on eBay for $400. That's just out of my price range, so I've been researching the individual books and solution keys for weeks.
  11. Yours is the edition I prefer and may end up getting so that info is great. Thankyou!
  12. Yes, I have downloaded the 2000 edition of Dolciani Algebra 1 & 2 as well as Jurgensen Geometry from Library Genesis. Internet Archive has solution keys to the Algebra 1 and Geometry, but not Algebra 2. The correct isbn would be very helpful.
  13. Dolciani users: Does the copyright year matter for a solution key as long as the cover pic matches the textbook? I really don't want to buy the wrong solution key considering how expensive they are. For instance, there are at least 2 different isbn numbers for the Alg 2 solution key.
  14. Because it was driving me nuts and I needed an answer! On weekdays my time is so much more limited because SCHOOL. I did warn. It was called VentPo, but I did forget to end it so I'll go edit that now.... Done 😁 Thank you! See, Renai's got my back. I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. 👅
  15. Sorry! I posted a screenshot of a page from the Foerster's text on the Ignore This Thread thread (General Ed forum) and one of the regular posters is a math person who was kind enough to reminded me of the piece I was missing. Sometimes it's just so much easier/faster to post there than to start a new thread.
  16. Thank you! That's the part I was missing! All I could see when I looked at this page is that one set (of the two that are alike) in each example was removed but I couldn't remember why it was removed. I knew there was a reason, but couldn't remember and it was seriously bugging me enough that I nearly bought the book just to figure it out! I DO know this! I'm just rusty, I guess. VentPo Over! Thankyou @73349 😎
  17. ITT to the rescue! Now I know the "why" that I just could not remember. I DO know this!
  18. Here's screenshot. Now, this could be a case of me just needing the rest of the page (or chapter) to refresh my memory, but I'm not sure and it's been a really long time! I am the type who wants to understand why I'm doing what I'm doing, not just how to get it done for the sake of passing and moving on. It drives me nuts now as much as it did 30 years ago. Even if I never use this information for anything else and my children don't want/need the 'why' like I do, I believe truly understanding will make me a better and more effective teacher.
  19. Thankyou @Janeway. I think I'm just stressing because I struggled in highschool math but was ignored by most math teachers. I was getting good grades so I clearly didn't need the same kind of help as the students who were failing. I could see and copy the patterns being used to solve problems but had no clue why I was doing it or why it worked. Thus, good grades and no clue. I'm currently looking at a picture of a page in Foerster's Alg 1 that is a prime example, yet I didn't use Foerster's. I used Jacobs Alg 1. I remember because I hated those lizards with everything in me. Lol. I haven't found a similar lesson in Dolciani (yet) to compare explanations, though. I will say, I am thankful for all the research I'm doing, as it's shedding light on areas I truly want to reteach myself.
  20. VentPo: I have been researching high school math options. Last night, while perusing Foerster texts on eBay, I came across and read a page from the Foerster Alg 1 text that is a prime example of what regularly had me in tears as a teenager. I can literally see what is being taught and the pattern used for solving the problem, but I have absolutely no clue why. Why does that work and why is that how to go about it? (And I cannot seem to find a comparable lesson in Dolciani Alg 1 or 2.) I am determined to figure this stuff out, which is why I'm researching so far in advance. If I can't make heads or tails of something, I cannot expect my children to learn with understanding when we get to that point in time. I really want to reteach myself these things with better understanding, but time is limited and I'm not sure the best way to go about it.
  21. I only had Oldest do a partial lesson in English today. It's a character sketch assignment. We went through the requirements and the classroom exercise that walks you through how to write a character sketch about David's loyalty to God using scriptures from the book of Samuel. I then told Oldest to write down who he wants to write a character sketch about and which character trait he will be emphasizing. He has the weekend to come up with a list of at least 3 examples which he'll use to write his first draft on Monday. Done. Now it's time to weekend. Yes, I used 'weekend' as a verb.
  22. I'm stalling. I don't wanna English. Specifically, because it's a writing assignment. Give me grammar all day long. I'll edit. I'll diagram. But please don't make me do a writing assignment the first week back to school.
  23. Your first sentence describes my oldest perfectly! 🤣
