  1. The package from Abebooks actually shipped overnight... From a completely different state than where the seller is. USPS says my package will arrive Mon.

Coffee'ing bright and early this morning. Daylight is coming earlier in the mornings.

    1. What's it say? I'll bet they're not at the place yet.

    2. You should contact them.

    3. They're hurrying to ignore you and keep the sale.

    1. When I click the button to track the package, USPS shows a label has been made, nothing more.

    2. I have... in an email that I have saved.

    3. I think I can refuse delivery/return to sender as long as I don't accept the package or open it.

I initiated return/refund on Abebooks and contacted the seller to make them aware. I then called and cancelled payment through my credit card as well.

I cancelled one of my textbook orders from Abebooks. I just couldn't get over the feeling that something was off. I did some digging and found some BBB complaints against this seller (https://www.bbb.org/us/tx/austin/profile/book-orders/campbell-bookstore-llc-0825-1000216606/customer-reviews) that sounded eerily similar to my own experience. I was already beginning to think the seller was purposely putting off shipping so that the books I ordered would arrive with only 9 calendar days left for me to return them if they weren't in the agreed upon condition..... then I stumbled onto a website about bookjacking. (https://www.zubalbooks.com/article-bookjacking.jsp) I had no idea this was a thing. The seller's name is on the list. I initiated return/refund and called my credit card to force the cancellation since there's no way (that I can find) to contact Abebooks directly and I already was confident the books had not actually shipped despite the 'shipped' status because the seller was giving me the runaround about a tracking number and asking for more time. Less than 24 hours after I cancelled my order, the seller has the same books listed at more than double the price. There is no way to leave a seller positive or negative reviews after a transaction on Abebooks. Those stars you see are solely based on a seller's return/refund rate.

  4. I thought I'd update this thread for future reference:

Thanks to some of the above posts, I was struck with the brilliant idea to pick 2-3 topics and compare them side by side in Foerster, Dolciani, Jacobs, and Jurgensen. I am surprised to realize that multiple editions of the same textbook vary in how topics are presented and explained. I never would've known, had it not been for OpenLibrary and Archive. We chose Foerster Algebra 1 & 2 classic editions and Jurgensen Geometry 2000 edition. I will likely also buy Jacobs older editions for myself because I find them fascinating and maybe one of my younger children will prefer them to Foresters in the future.

This is so sad. He's a little reject. Apparently there were several and they all got taken, but no one wanted him because he was so ugly, so they were going to take him to the pound. My sweet oldest DD with the soft heart rescued him.

  6. In all fairness, I've researched highschool math texts for years so I know exactly which textbooks (right down to the exact editions) I want. I don't want to pay an even more inflated price 2-3 years down the road for textbooks in worse condition. I also plan to use these for three children. Oldest will just happen to use them first. I am not going outside of my annual curriculum budget because any year that I have room left in my budget, I buy for future schoolyears. I do this with the hope of keeping the same annual budget even as my younger children begin school and Oldest begins highschool. I purchase mostly non-consumables for the same reason.

Your Honor, I'd like to enter into evidence these screenshots showing high school math texts for sale on multiple websites as of today. Since they are still available, my client clearly did not "buy all the high school math texts." We agree that no reasonable person would do that, if only for lack of warehouse space. She may have prudently obtained in advance a few items for household use for a child who is already in secondary school, but did so in a lawful manner and with appropriate restraint.

    🤣🤣🤣🤣

  8. Um, I just bought a 'like new' teachers manual on eBay that matches one of the textbooks I'm waiting on from Abebooks. I wasn't actually planning on buying TMs, but at the price I got it for, I couldn't resist.

I might need an intervention. Who else buys all the highschool math texts before their oldest has finished 7th grade? Me!

    A few days.

Every used workbook I've ever bought from Amazon was completely filled in.... Good luck.

I've had that experience with a workbook before and haven't ordered any previously owned workbook since.

I'm not worried about the used textbook I ordered from Amazon because I know their return process and have no problem using it if needed. My concern is the 2 textbooks I ordered through Abebooks because I've never bought books through them before and don't know what to expect.

I'm praying that all three textbooks arrive in the condition described or better.

  10. I bought textbooks on Abebooks early yesterday and got an email showing my order was received. The email from Abebooks also states I should get an email from the seller confirming the order. That hasn't happened yet. Does anyone know how long this typically takes? I also ordered a used textbook from Amazon directly after I placed the Abebooks order and my Amazon order has already been shipped! I get anxious about ordering used books of any kind simply because everyone's version of "very good condition" is different, but these textbooks are out of print so buying new is not an option.

  11. I've spent way too much time researching highschool math this week. I am so so so grateful for the archive. I've managed to compare two editions each of two separate geometry texts and the differences in how a single topic is taught is very helpful in making a final decision.

Also, apparently I have an egg allergy (did an elimination diet in Nov/Dec, didn't complete the reintroduction stage because I was too tired of the lack of diversity and having to cook every.single.thing from scratch, but apparently no breakfast burritos for me anymore). Not mysteriously doubling over in pain multiple times a week is nice though.

I'm allergic to eggs and didn't know until allergy testing a few years ago. On the positive side: since most flu vaccines are incubated in eggs, I don't get hounded by my Dr to get a yearly flu shot anymore. Every time I've gotten a flu shot, I've gotten incredibly sick afterward. Now I know why.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a geography curriculum for the 7th - 8th grade crowd? We are doing Uncle Sam and You by Notgrass next year for 7th,  which isn't really geography heavy. Anything you'd think would pair well with it? Thanks!

My oldest is currently using Uncle Sam and You in 7th. Civics/Government is the focus of the course. Geography/mapping were covered in America the Beautiful and From Adam to Us. We've done both and I still have the mapbooks that he completed. You could very easily add in Trailguide to US Geography, Great States (board game), or Draw the USA.

@Servant4Christ Awesome! I think my 4th & 5th grader will like it. We do nature study, but I want a little more variety & depth. My kids don’t seem to enjoy discovery science either. It ends up being me that makes the discovery and they watch me do it.

I was hesitant to order it because it doesn’t get glowing reviews, but I like the samples. You sold it to me with your review though. lol! Thanks!

I think it really just boils down to preference in how topics are presented. Some find it dry, but we like it and it gets done. If you have specific units you'd like to see a lesson from before you make a purchase, pm me and I'll take some pictures for you. I have all the science texts from grade 2-9/10.

Do you use R&S science? If so, how is it?

Yes, my oldest is currently in 7th grade working through the R&S grade 8 science course. We started using R&S science (grade 3 book) when he was in second grade and he's asked not to switch every year since. He likes that he's not confined to just one branch of science for an entire year. Each unit is different. He also prefers not having to use a curriculum that uses the discovery approach. R&S teaches the lesson and then most times will give activities you can choose to do (or not do) to illustrate concepts. We accidentally managed to bust a mason jar (in our kitchen sink, thankfully) when learning about the boiling point of water at higher elevations and my younger two boys thought it was fantastic to guess which color would spread fastest in cold/hot water, while Oldest told them why, in the energy unit. I recently looked into Berean Builders Earth Science for highschool and was surprised that the sample shows a lot of the same stuff Oldest just learned in the weather unit of the R&S grade 8 book.

I bounce back and forth between using it and not. It feels "complete", it's just not our way, so I'm torn.

I'm relooking at IEW now. Oldest likes Notgrass, but I'm not entirely convinced if it means needing to add another writing program. The biggest draw for me was having both the history & English/lit credits covered, but now I'm reading that it might not be enough.

I would decide to cover writing X days a week, then assign from Notgrass and R&S with no intention of doing either program completely, but being consistent in the process.

My plan is to rotate between IEW and Clearwater Press for writing and use Old Western Culture for History and Literature. Old Western Culture has extremely little writing so I am fortunate in that I don't have to think about it too much.

I've heard of IEW, but not the others. Guess I've got more to look into. I thought you were planning on Notgrass for highschool, too, which is why I asked you. 😂

...and for a complete 180: Our R&S order with Middle's first grade stuff showed up today! Yay! We can start first grade on Monday, right? 🤣
