  1. On the web site it says that if you complete both the Algebra series and the Geometry series (which isn't finished yet of course) that it will count for math credit all the way from Pre-Alg to Pre-Calc. Do you think that is accurate? I could count it as 4 years of high school math? 1 year of Alg. 1 1 year of Alg. 2 1 year of Geometry 1 year of Pre-calc/Trig
  2. That is exactally what I was looking for!!! Thank you so much! Kelly
  3. I didn't know that they could take the PSAT multiple times! It must not hurt them later, to have taken it and not done as well, earlier in their high school career? How do I get her signed up to take the test?
  4. We've got that one covered. She reads more than anyone I've ever known! Sometimes, we have to ask her to put her book down at the dinner table so that she can be more social! She started reading well at age 3, and has never stopped. Kelly
  5. My oldest dd is starting high school next fall. I am struggling with putting together a cirriculum. Dd does excellent in school, and would love to have scholarship goals. I know that this is a tall order, but could you give me a run-down of programs that you used, any outside classes, or anything at all, that you think helped academically, to get your dc to where they are? I'm scared to death that I am going to mess this up and that she will suffer for having a mom that is too new to all of this. She has such high expectations and huge desires for her future. Thanks so much! Kelly
  6. Hi! I am looking for a lit program for two of my dd's. Last year we did K12, and really enjoyed the liturature component of their language arts program. This year, I've felt that our lit has been lacking greatly. They are still reading books, but without the structured program, I don't feel like our discussions are what I would like them to be. They could both use the same level, as my 8yo loves to read and is above average in speed and comprehension, while my 10yo still needs a little coaxing. Does something like this exist for the elementary years?
  7. Wow, that sounds like a really good option for us. I just want to be able to keep her home, keep her challenged, and know that we are covering all the bases. No small order at this point in our homeschooling career. I know I'll be better by the time my younger dc get there, but I don't want my oldest to suffer from my lack of experience too much. Seems like courses like these would be a good insurance policy!;)
  8. Thank you both for the ideas. I had just started looking at hewitt the other day. Looks very good to me. Questions about Kolbe: We are not Catholic, but I certainly don't have anything against our materials having some religious content, even if it is specifically Catholic from time to time. I'm just wondering if the the English and Literature materials have content that would be difficult for someone of another faith to utilize? From the samples I saw, there is absolutely nothing to cause me to worry. Also, what about the history syllabus?? It looks great too. A lot like History Odyessy, which we are using now, but a little more guidance to the student. Also, do the programs come with a materials list? Thanks again! Kelly
  9. I think I read a post once, a long time ago, that said that the info in R&S 4, is a major repeat of 3, and one can skip it and go to 5?? I don't remember, and I've got a child finishing level 3 this spring. Also, if I can skip R&S 4, could I skip over Growing with Grammar 4, and go right to level 5 of GWG?? (If I make the switch from Rod and Staff to GWG.) I've got a child that I put a level lower, because she was previously in public school. Now, she is frustrated because of the grade level and wants to do 5 next year, as she will be a 5th grader. TIA!!!
  10. Hi! My oldest dd is going to be starting high school level studies next fall. I am earnestly searching for an absolutely incredible program for her, for language arts. Her great talents are in writing, and I want something that challenges. Her greatest love is reading, and I want something that really stretches her there. I guess, what I am looking for is an excellent "AP type" course. I also need it to be fairly low-maintainance, as far as my interaction is concerned. I have 4 younger children that take up a great deal of my time and energy. I would like something that is complete. This is only our 2nd year of homeschooling, and I am not confident in piecing together my own program. Also, last but not least, I need something that doesn't cost an absolute fortune. Maybe up to 200 dollars or so, but not more than that. Any ideas?? TIA!!
  11. Thank you all so much for your input. I will look at Video Text and Chalkdust more indepth and I am thinking that it is time to slow way down, give her a little room to grow, and see if that helps. She also, is/was an excellent math student!
  12. that MUS doesn't have very complete instructions in the upper levels. That definately will not work for dd. She would freak. We need baby steps. I'm almost wondering if maybe she is just too young-minded to "get" algebra. Maybe just repeating next year, when she's a little older will help?
  13. My dd will complete Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1 this year. She is doing ok, but gets frustrated and discouraged so easily. I know that TT is suppose to be an "easier" program, and yes, it is better than the more traditional program we used with K12 last year, but Math is still making her crazy. We are still having Math tears. I hate that. To add the the problem, I'm worse in Math than she ever thought of being. I can help her with Alegebra 1, minimally, but we absolutely have to have a cirriculum that is workable with the absolute minimum of teacher involvement. I'm sure that between the difference in scope and sequence of TT, and her lack of understanding, she will need to do Alg. 1, over again next year, with whatever other program we choose...and just count this year as a second pre-alg year. I'm just wondering if there are any Math fairies out there that can make a very solid, and easy to understand program appear before my eyes?? Is MUS an option? Is it easy to use, even if a child hasn't used any of the prior, elementary years? MUS rescued one of my other younger children from complete math confusion this year...but that is a 2nd grader. This stuff with Algebra is so different...isn't it?? Oh, and we do have time. She in technically only a 7th grader this year, so we are planning an Algebra repeat for 8th.
  14. I'm drowning in a sea of confusion over what to do next year with my oldest. She is ready for high school level work, and it is scaring me to death. Up until recently, the jury was still out on whether or not she would continue to homeschool through high school. Now that the decision is made, I am looking for options. One that has caught my interest is the print Oak Meadow. I'm wondering about the quality of the program, what one misses out on if they are not enrolled in OM, and if you've used it, did you like it? What are the good and bad features of the materials, etc. Anything and everything you can share would be much appreciated.
  15. How do I find the free printable for the week? I can't find it anywhere??:o
  16. I can't find anything. We are doing ancients this year, so it would be beyond terrific to find an ancient copybook, but anything is fine really. She loves copywork. We've started out with ZB, and now I can't seem to find anything done in that style. I know I can make my own, but I'd love to just buy something that is ready to roll.
  17. We bought it for our first year of homeschooling, and can not afford to continue, so it is no long an option. :)
  18. Hi! I'm trying to plan for next year. Everything is set, and I am sticking with all my programs...except for Language arts! I've got 5 kids. Next year they will be at 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 8th/9th grade levels. The amount of language arts materials floating around our school room is enough to drown in. However, I still feel like I'm missing out on some literature. I would love, love, love to have it all integrated, yet I really don't want to have to make up my own stuff. LLATL seems so appealing to me. I used K12 last year, and LLATL seems to be a lot like K12's Language Arts program...which I felt was very complete and great! This subject is my big strength, as far as teaching goes, and I have no problem adding discussions, papers, grammar or spelling rules, etc, whenever something falls a little short. However, I have no intention of buying a program that is seriously inadequate. I have too many little ones to teach all at once. I need/want something that is straightforward and well-planned, so that I can just pick it up and go. I'm looking for a good literature base, and writing that slowly ramps up as grade levels increase. Spelling, grammar and vocabulary are also important. It you've had experience with LLATL, or any other all-inclusive program...could you please tell me how you liked it, how much time you took per day and at what grade level, and if you've found that you enjoy another system better? TIA!!
  19. Hi! I'm asking this for my sil, who has a son that is in public school. She is in the beginning stages of considering homeschooling. Her son turned 8 in December, and is in 2nd grade. He is not doing well at all, especially in reading. She feels that he has completely given up, and has stopped making progress. If she were to pull him out of ps, and homeschool him, are there any programs for reading, that you could recommend, to help him? TIA!!!
  20. DD, who is 6, and reading very well, is finished with 100 EZ lessons this week. As we've moved through the program, I've also been teaching extra about phonics and spelling/reading rules. She has a great grasp of everything, and remembers everything I've taught her. I'm wondering where to go now? Do we move into a regular spelling/reading/writing program, or should we fill the gap for the rest of this school year with something else? This is one phase that I've not yet had to deal with as a homeschooler, as my older children were in public school as 1st graders. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!! TIA!
