  1. We've been using ETC and I have AAS Level 1. Do you like AAS? I'm trying to decide if I should go with ETC & AAS or Saxon, since Saxon has both phonics & spelling....
  2. I'm glad I found this thread! I just bought Saxon Phonics 1. I'm considering switching from ETC to Saxon because Saxon incorporates spelling whereas ETC does not. I would have to add a spelling component to ETC such as All About Spelling. We are using Saxon Math 1 and LOVE it!! Should I switch?? ETC teaches the rules, but does not have the student *code* the words like Saxon does. Is this really important? (I did not have phonics in school) Any advice???????
  3. I think that's what I'm going to do...Thanks for the advice!
  4. Quick question....My dd just started Saxon 1 last week after finishing Saxon K the week before and it is VERY easy for her. Would it be wise to test her and skip ahead in Saxon 1?
  5. Thanks for the input. I was just curious about the program.. :)
  6. Has anyone used this program and if so, what are your likes/dislikes? Thanks....
  7. We LOVE Saxon here!! Love the incremental approach.
  8. We are just finishing up Saxon K and have LOVED IT!! The only other thing you may want is a geoboard. There are several lessons that require a geoboard. HTH!
  9. FWIW....We're finishing up saxon k and we didn't use the meeting book. My dd learned the *calendar* from a wall calendar and we didn't do it everyday.;) Plus, I just added the calendar, patterns, etc. into everyday things and she did fine with it. Again, that's my opinion. I agree with the OP, if you like saxon, just find ways to incorporate all the meetings into everyday things and don't be too concerned. The younger ones will catch on just fine and what they don't understand now, they will later on. Hope this helps...:)
  10. I have a K'er starting in Feb. and for what it's worth we breezed thru saxon k. We did 2-3 lessons a day and my dd retained everything and she LOVES math. I agree with alatexan68, if she wants to do more and is not struggling, then go ahead and do more. My dd is 4.5 and I struggled with starting her in Saxon 1, but she honestly has done very well in saxon k, so I'm just planning on taking it slower, if need be. I purchased the RS Games, but haven't used them yet :D, but I have read great things about them! HTH :)
  11. I'm looking for a Bible curriculum for kindergarten. Any suggestions????
  12. I haven't had the experience as others have had with saxon, but can tell you our experience so far. We just finished saxon k and will be starting saxon 1 in Feb. My dd LOVED math. We tried just about all the math programs out there, literally. I narrowed it down to singapore and saxon. When we started singapore my dd would shut down and said she didn't like it. We pulled out saxon and she *perked* up. She would do 3 lessons in one sitting. Again, that's with saxon k. I sat down yesterday and read thru saxon 1 because of all the threads that I've read about saxon not teaching the *whys*. I just don't see it. I agree with Melanie that saxon is not a lot of fun, no colorful workbooks like other programs, but I feel that saxon is a solid program. I have a friend that taught saxon in the ps system and their students always scored high on standardized state tests. I hope this helps. BTW: I'm glad this thread was started!!
  13. Ok...Now my head hurts!!! We are starting saxon 1 in Feb. and my dd LOVED saxon k. As I've read on this forum, there are 2 opinions about saxon, you either love it or hate it. I'm wondering after reading MANY MANY threads should I supplement with SM so that she understands the "whys" of math, but stick with saxon for the drill, etc. We tried SM EB and she didn't like it. It was like pulling teeth to get her to do it. I'd pull out saxon and I had to stop her because we would do 3 lessons in one sitting. Any suggestions???? Bill I noticed that you are teaching elementary math....what are you using???? What is everyone else using????? Thanks for the help!! :)
  14. I'm so enjoying this thread!! :) I'm one of the "ones" that doesn't skip. I did not have a good foundation in math in school and math has always been a struggle for me, so I've determined to give my dd's a good foundation in math. We are just finishing up Saxon K and we didn't skip. We did not use the meeting book, but we did calendar work. Somedays my dd would end up doing 3 lessons because it came easy for her, but we wouldn't skip because I think the same way as others, that we would miss something and then end up with gaps. So thanks to everyone for their advice and input.
  15. Yes..this does help. Did you find the meeting book helpful? I wasn't going to ge it, but now I'm rethinking it. And doing half of a lesson one day and the second half the next is a good idea as well. I'll keep it in mind. Julie
  16. WOW Linda that's very impressive! That's really good! I already planned on it taking us a while to go through Saxon 1, but this is good to know. One other thing I was wondering about is the meeting book. Is that helpful or a waste of time? We didn't use it with Saxon K.
  17. I'm glad I found this thread!! :D We are starting Saxon 1 in Feb. My dd is 4.5 and we have BREEZED through Saxon K. I have had people tell me to take it slow with her because she is young. Any suggestions from those of you who have been there, done that with a "young" Kinder.
