  1. My 14 year old reffed children's soccer games. He made good money. There is a small investment to get started-a uniform and a day of training to get certified. If your child can handle the occasional out of control coach, this is a great job.
  2. Add me to the list of dropouts. Latin was a very unpopular subject in my home. Although conjugating Amos, Amot,.....has come in handy in crossword puzzles!:)
  3. I agree, I also use the worksheets and tests. The worksheets cut down on some of the tediousness of the written practices and the tests are a great diagnostic tool.
  4. I had to chuckle a little over your discription of your son's slowness...it reminded me of some of the issues Miss Piggle-Wiggle had to help parents solve.
  5. I agree the uprights are more convenient. Be warned, however, ours keeps the ice cream too soft. It works great for meat though.
  6. Only if we ate mac and cheese for every meal and stayed home each day. I can't believe what sports and music lessons cost! I often dream of starting my own soccer league where I can charge families high fees to kick a ball on a mowed lawn. I'd be set for life. Oh, sorry I went off on a rabbit trail....
  7. I agree with you! It sounds like other shows are going for shock value. Maybe these PBS shows are really not considered reality shows? Because no actors are hired, I was classifying them as reality.
  8. We have used spectrum workbooks but only as a supplement when extra drill is necessary. My boys (strong in math for the most part) find them very dull. Of course their dear old dad loves math and is forever coming up with fun ways to teach concepts. We use singapore, and now are beginning teaching textbooks.
  9. A group of people try to recreate an early puritan settlement. They live for months without any modern influence. Roles such as governer, preacher, freeman, bondservants, etc are played out. A narrator gives information throughout that is very informative. This show really had our family talking about religion, government, and history. A word of warning: the producers choose a family with ultra liberal leanings as well as a young man who was gay just to stir things up. The gay issue was really treated in only one episode but the liberal family had a difficult time with following puritan law. The governer was a pastor from Texas who we all loved (as well as his family). This show is out on DVD. I would recommend it as an alternative to regular reality shows.
  10. Todd Wilson's Homeschooling Cartoon books. Seriously, they aren't "how to" but your whole family will get a kick out of them. I guess the last serious book was the WTM and that was a couple years ago.
  11. We follow the ps schedule. My husband teaches at a University and my oldest son will start ps this year. That leaves me with 3 at home. I need a summer break as much as the kids do!
  12. Have you ever seen the PBS show Colonial House? We watched it as a family and it spurred some very interesting discussions. Sorry I can't comment about the other shows. I have only seen the nanny one once (one of my kids was really grateful for our family after seeing it).
  13. Ooooo How exciting would an extra $50 be? Let's see, I'd probably split it between the book store and craft supplies. But I do like the idea of a membership to a museum....
