  1. Spanish colonialism in Latin America The book I found to be the biggest help in learning about Latin America colonialism was 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created by Charles C Mann. This is a high school read. The book is not 100% straight forward but is great in sourcing where the information comes from, also is weak in having a thesis beyond giving you tons of facts about what happened where/when. The book also talks a lot about Africa and China events that caused mass immigration.
  2. Thank you for that article about students entering college. Having read more on the article remedial is below college algebra or English 101. When high school graduation requirement is three years of math including algebra 1. This information is from this article and Yreka high school in CA. The gap between algebra 1 and college algebra would explain the high number of high school grads that require math remedial course. One answer is to raise the level of math required in high school however we as a nation have said that we need all students to graduate from high school so set the bar very low, combined with the fear of hurting students by not passing them to the next grade with out regard to if the student is ready for the high level. A second article then goes on to explain the problem with the math placement exams given by college, place a lot of students in math classes they took in high school leading to high drop out rates with the cost of remedial and normal math classes being the same.
  3. The Black Panther Party: A Graphic Novel History This is a longer book about 250 pages on the black panther movement, what they did, why they were supported and who was a part of it. I found it to be a great read and learned a lot about the interaction between the police and others during the moment. Lots of talking points about the moment, the behavior of police in the 1960's and today as well as rights and how they can be applied in daily life.
  4. Thanks for the answer. I had to know with that amount if it worked for any school.
  5. Question Did any of the material sent to you help your daughter in deciding what colleges to apply to?
  6. Why do you HAVE to learn it like that? Not all college teach chemistry in that order but the programs that finish not start with general chemistry demand a APchem of 4/5, or they did when I applied. I meet and talked to a friend that got in to one of those programs. He stated that he know the how and why of the faith statements of chemistry that could be proved with undergrad classes. However he had to know the faith statements and how to use them to get into the program. His better knowledge and understanding of the faith statements didn't help in teaching basic chemistry. As for the general ed at US college that is because they believe that these classes will teach us to think, to give students a broad knowledge base and fund departments of the college.
  7. Sorry I am very slow to give the advise to do labs to learn chemistry after giving the advise to do a learn chemistry by lab book which is well reviewed but I hadn't used and watching it fail. I also at the private school saw students fail to learn with a different chemistry teacher that taught 100% chalk and talk with lots of memorization including things that don't need to be memorized like a formulas for moving moles, gram and g/mol without understanding. As such I don't know if more lab would help. I don't know any magic/best way to learn chemistry. I do believe that 0 lab doesn't seen to help. I thing that lewelma idea of youtubing the labs in your book would be a great plan. I was trying to point out that chemistry is not intuitive, by doing I know CoCl2 turns pink but I could not answer about the color a different cobalt salt turns with out doing it, beside it would most likely not be white. I also can't tell you why CoCl2 turns pink only that it does. lewelma put it tons better in that chemistry is filled with faith statements. I remember in a 400's class having to design a lab to find out how many atoms are in a mole, something you have to take on faith your first term of chemistry, by the way no one in the class designed a working lab to test that. The reason I suggest the book above. I suggested it, due to it not focusing on how we got to current chemistry theory (theory history that is confusing, spending days learning about plum pudding model to learn it is wrong. Waste of time that doesn't help in learning chemistry) but the content is very well covered for basic chemistry at about the AP level. Some topic more than AP and others less. My three biggest problems with the book that it starts fast thinking that you already know the basics of atom, elements, ions and compounds so covers them very fast. Second it doesn't have a lot of practice problems. Third that it doesn't cover gas laws much something that is a big part of high school chemistry in America. Sorry again. I don't know how you are going about learning chemistry so can't say if it is great way, which it may be. I was trying to point out why I don't think that intuition is a good way to talk about chemistry. Chemistry model set are used a lot in organic chemistry due to poor abilities to see 3D shapes from drawings and drawing your 2D drawings.
  8. Chemistry is about understanding content not mathy problems. Yes there are some problems but all the basics for chemistry is at Algebra 1. I like the hodders edu cie chemistry as&a2 9781510480230 please note this book is a two year text but and pretty lower on problems to be done however it is about the concepts of chemistry. Taking a look at the IG level book may be helpful first. Please note I taught chemistry at the IG, AS and A2 at a private school. Chemistry is a subject where tons of hands on helps in learning but chemistry also has a fair amount of memorization and things that must be taken as fact even though you can not prove them what you learn about them. A bad view view here on chemistry and a real intuition for chemistry. I don't know if real intuition is a thing in chemistry, yes we learn the rules and how to use them. Like learning that CoCl2 turns from white to pink with water but not other liquids turning from an anhydrous to hydrated salt. Learning this is best done via of a hands on activity with adding CoCl2 to a range of liquids see what happened and talking about it not memorizing it from the book. Wanting to learn science from a book with out the hands on makes it harder. There is a reason for chemistry modeling set and labs.
  9. I am looking at Museum of the bible, four book set on the bible and it say that curriculum focuses on the history, narrative and impact of the Bible. I have not purchased the program yet. https://shop.museumofthebible.org/collections/student-edition-textbooks
  10. A Failed class can cause the college to withdraw the offer or loss of some to tons of finical aid. The school will note the failed the class and if they don't bring to the college now they may not find out in time to come up with plan B if that college will not honor the offer as it was conditional. If the school does withdraw the offer they should return the deposit at this time. I had two friends in high school with a failed class senior year of high school. One talked to the school in January and kept their offer with a small loss of finical aid. The other didn't tell the college until June and lost their offer and the deposit due to not following the rules signed with the deposit of letting the school know within four weeks of a failed class. Please note this was in 2006 , I don't think a ton has changed however.
  11. A comment on schools, most schools/districts have tons of resources, a new resource is not the answer. I read an article on a school district that did a reform that really was helping students. I have lost the article sorry. The school placed all all students in same size random K class and at the end of the year had a test on reading and math or on first day of the next year. In grade 1 all students were placed in class based on the test scores. The classes with the lowest test scores had the fewest students as low as 10 kids along with more experienced teachers and highest scores the most students with a max of 30 students. This helped all students and all students received instruction at their level instead of the teaching at the middle 80%-50%. The school continued with the testing and classes based on the testing until middle school. Five years into this system all students are doing better, there are still kids ahead but no student is behind in 8th grade. This district had 200-400 students per grade. The district also did things to help in middle and high school. In middle school a study hall for all students with ability to go to any teacher when needing help as well as longer school days with more recess of 90 minutes. Recess was added for k-10 grades with something added for the 90 minutes for 11 and 12th. Recess not watched by teachers and teacher having that time as real breaks so not answering emails, meetings or any other school tasks. The school district needed a lot more people for this to work and buy in from all in the community. The answer they found was smaller class for students needing help and uniform classes in skill level. Problems with this answer, discrimination this didn't look at race and the lowest scoring class didn't properly reflect the schools racial make up and cost for more personal for watching students as well as more teachers. There are things we know help, the question is are they legal and are they acceptable to the community. Other things we know help single sex schools, having real consequences tied to testing like getting a driving permit, and other giant changes. Small changes like resources be they SOTW or chrombooks pre each student are not magic fixes. We need big changes but big changes are very hard to do.
