Like a reading assignment for the week and then group discussion with other kids and a teacher. Maybe even assessments thrown in. Anything like this out there? Thanks

I wait until they can read well and then have then do Apologia with the notebook journals and Notgrass history. They can do these independently. My kids love both of these curriculum.

Yes, obviously... I just need to roll ideas around in my head. Even though I have no idea what your school district is like, what would you do if you were in my shoes? Would you consider your local school district in this situation? Why or why not?. That's all I'm asking for. Experiences, opinions, advice... I've always carried a disdain for public school education, but here I am considering it. And I know schools vary wildly. My local one is not great, just average, maybe slightly below average.

I've always homeschooled all my kids, but next year they are all going to an academically advanced charter school but one: my 3rd grader is behind in reading, so they wouldn't accept him. I was all set to homeschool him with Barton this year, but I'm thinking that with his siblings going to school and having that social experience, and him home with only me, that he'll be very unhappy and bored. So I'm thinking about putting him in the local school district and tutoring him after school, or even during school if they'd let me. Would that be disastrous? My primary goal is to get him caught up in reading AND writing, so that hopefully he can test into his grade-level at the charter school next year. Would public school help him academically or keep him behind? How do I find out? Who would I even talk to? If you only homeschool one child, how do you keep them happy socially? If you afterschooled your children, did it work out well?

R&S 3 was more grammar than I got in public school, so I'm sure she's well prepared by now.

It depends how quickly she picks up reading in the next two months. If she makes leaps and bounds, then she is going to a fantastic charter school with her sisters! If she's still struggling like she is now, I'll keep her home with her struggling brother and do: Barton Reading and Spelling Saxon math 1 or 2, whatever she tests into Copy work in cursive Read alouds with oral narration.

No, not formally. I've been teaching him reading from regular phonics books, waiting for it to click. He's my fourth child I've taught to read, so I know how an average reader progresses. I've also tutored a unrelated 12 year old girl with Barton for 18 months and saw it worked wonders with her, but I didn't want to use it unless absolutely necessary on my son because it's tedious. But after the charter school said he didn't even test into 2nd grade, it was a wake up call to me to get him reading now. He's feeling dumb because his peers can read already.

We had Lucky Charms because my birthday boy wanted it. We usually only eat it on Christmas morning. We usually have scrambled eggs and toast, or oatmeal, or grits and eggs. Sometimes I'll make vege eggs. We like eggs, obviously. ðŸ³

The Good and the Beautiful is a comprehensive language arts that is very Charlotte Mason. (Reading, phonics, art, geography, writing). For my first grader I use TGATB, handwriting without tears, and CLE math. That's it.

We're trying out The Good and the Beautiful. I love their LA for my beginning readers, 4th grade, and 6th grade, but dropped it for my 8th grader and moving on to IEW and analytical grammar this week to shore up those skills before high school. I tried the good and the beautiful history, but I just don't have time to do history with the kids, so I opted for independent history.. Notgrass. I still love CLE math, but I switched my oldest three to TT because 5 kids in CLE is too much of my time to check work. :(. My kids love TT because it is so easy compared to CLE. Our first year with Notgrass history and my middle schoolers love it, as do I. I'll be using it for high school next year. As always, we love the elementary apologia science with notebook journals. My 8th grader is doing physical science and it's great. We'll stay with apologia for high school as well.

Can I just give you ladies a hug??? Thank you so much for your suggestions. It helps so much. Yes, I'm requiring too much of her and expecting too much of her. I am going to make time for her every day, I just have to rearrange my priorities. I'm putting everyone else's school on hold for a few days and I'm going to focus on her for a little while. She has a combination of online classes and at home classes, so she spends a lot of time online.... way too much time. Every time I check on her she is on her computer "doing" her online classes. I think I've given her too much work and some classes are not a good fit. So I have a lot of adjusting to do, with her work load and with my expectations. We did switch to Teaching Textbooks just before Christmas because the math checking of everyone was taking way too much time. That has been a good decision for us. My husband is deployed until November. I wake at 330am and work for three hours from home every day before my day starts. I'm way busy and tired.

I have six kids ages 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13. I've always homeschooled. It was my plan to have my kids reading so well that they could do an independent study/online school for middle/high school because I can't teach everyone in one day. I don't have time. I spend one on one time with the 6, 8, and 9 year old right now, totally neglect my 4 year old, and over see the older two's work, make sure they do the assignments. For the last year, my oldest has not been putting hardly any effort into her assignments. She'll say she did them, but didn't. So I've switched to different programs hoping to provide more accountability for her, but it's not working. I just checked the last two week's assignments and again, she said she did them, marks them off, but there's no work to show. I don't know what to do. She's been lying. And I don't have time to hold her hand through each assignment. Im either an going to stick her in the public school tomorrow or... make time to teach her every day: read her assignments to her, have her turn them into me every day. I don't know if I can do that. I'm so swamped as it is. Any advice?

Thanks for the comments. It helps to get outside perspective. It is always all about him. I know that. He has also been crazy his whole life and has pulled pathetic stunts that would blow you away; it's just that this is a new type of crazy he's never done before. I read a definition of "psychopath" once that described him perfectly, except he's not violent (anymore). He definitely has mental issues and has forever. When he called out of the blue, I lied to him and told him that I was visiting my in-laws for Christmas; I needed a fast excuse. He may not call me again for a while OR he may show up at my doorstep uninvited. I live in Colorado and he lives in Georgia, btw. Anyway... I should probably tell him the truth about Christmas and try to say something kind that will still keep him away for a year, but I'm procrastinating. I preferred the silent treatment.

I'm using Christian Light Education for math. It's great, solid, traditional math. However dd gets half of the problems wrong. So I spend a lot of time checking, re-checking, and then teaching her what she doesn't understand. It is taking a long time and I have 5 other kids that will eventually be in pre algebra. I'm so tired!!! What are my options?
