Foreign language is a high school course, whether they took in 8th grade or 5th grade. Your child may be 8th grade "age" but can be doing high school courses. A lot of homeschoolers graduate early in my area at 16 anyway. I remember several years of Spanish that I took in high school - I would say they were elementary in my opinion now LOL. They decide and you decide for your school.

My 6yr old son is gifted, he taught himself the letters and numbers, multiplication, piano, etc a few years ago. However, he has delays, which I recently found out are most likely dyspraxia. He can't pedal a bike, use scissors or hold a pencil correctly. He writes very neat but he doesn't use the pencil correctly, despite much teaching, therapy, etc. the past 2 years - he reverts back to a grip hold if he doesn't use his pencil grips. So, it isn't that his handwriting is illegible - it is very legible! He doesn't use the correct strokes to form each letter - is this something I should worry about? For instance, with e, he starts at the end of e and goes around and then finishes it at the middle. I'm wondering if Handwriting Without Tears would be beneficial to him in forming his letters correctly? Or should I not worry as they look great, despite being formed opposite and holding the pencil incorrectly? I hope someone can understand what I'm trying to explain lol! *To add - I did go through all the letters and teach the proper way to write each one last year, despite him already teaching himself prior. He either doesn't remember the correct way or prefers his way.

When someone takes something shared privately in an email and posts it on social media, I consider that a violation of one's privacy. Can we trust anyone? Is anything we want kept private - private anymore? I'm assuming he wanted it kept private to just those he shared with email or else he would have put it on social media.

I'm sorry you don't see the difference in an anonymous blog and FB that gives your full name, etc. I'm sure you are coming at this from a viewpoint of trying to "understand" what I said. You do bring up an interesting point though and I really didn't think about it. I still don't understand FB's allure because I hear so many constantly talking about the drama going on there, the friendships and relationships damaged or even ruined, political turmoil that I believe have only divided this country even further, etc. By all means, have at it but I just can't understand the allure.

Totally agree. I don't normally read these posts but this particular post was on the side of the forum homepage and it caught my attention. I don't have FB, actually no one in my house does and neither do we share photos of ourselves or our kids (showing their face). Too much facial recognition technology out there. I'm really trying to protect my kids and when they are grown and gone and want to put something out there, its on them. My husband has been with the same employer for over a decade, a very large and long-standing company that is worldwide. Several heads shared with him how they search potential employees online - FB, Twitter, etc. Good thing is, he has nothing online, but some haven't been so lucky. Employers are now able to really find out what type of employee they could possibly be hiring by looking at what they FREELY put out there. I suppose that is beneficial to them and a great tool. I honestly don't understand the allure of FB but thought I would chime in.

My dd struggled with spelling, so we did AAS up to Level 5 and it really, really helped her! I would have finished Levels 6 & 7 (I still have them), but I didn't want to teach it. I still regret that because, even though she spells better and finished up all the levels of Spelling Workout, her spelling is lagging from what it could have been. Reading is what helped her the most, the more she read the better her spelling and grammar/writing. We used the tiles. Even though she is in 9th grade now, she still talks about AAS, she absolutely loved it!

Need advice on Latin—advice going forward?
Classically Minded replied to ExcitedMama's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My dd14 did Prima Latina in 3rd/4th grade and she still remembers everything even though we didn't do Latin in 5th-8th grade! We did the DVD teacher and the CD with songs/prayers. She is now doing Latina Christiana I & II for 9th grade for a high school credit with the DVD teacher, its going well. Then, we will move on to Henle Latin. -
9th Grade Plans
Classically Minded replied to Classically Minded's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
What do you think about Apologia's Health? Does it look good? I've only seen a sample but thinking of getting it to add to Biology. -
I'm new to the high school board for this coming year as my dd14 is starting 9th grade. I've been with WTM forums for 9 years this month and in the K-8 boards, I know there was always a post going for each grade and what everyone was using. I haven't seen one on this forum, please tell me they don't stop! I really enjoyed reading what others do. Ours isn't as advanced or fancy as most but it works for us. Here are our plans for 9th grade: Core Subjects English I - GWTM; Vocabulary from Classical Roots; WWS; Book list Algebra I - Saxon Algebra I; Saxon Teacher CDs; Art Reed DVDs Latin I - Latina Christiana I & II Biology I - Self Teaching Guide to Biology; Biology 101 DVDs, kits, etc. World History & Geography - Encyclopedias and other books; Videos Traditional Logic I - Memoria Press Electives Intro to Aviation - Flight school online & Flight hours Information Technology - Digital Savvy (CompuScholar) Computer Keyboarding - Typing Instructor Bible - MP Christian Studies III & IV PE/Health What are you doing? Share your plans!

Classified Board Not Working
Classically Minded replied to Ms Brooks's topic in Site News & Discussions
I also could not get to the Classifieds by going through the top link, I had to scroll down the forum and go to the Swap board and then choose for sale from there. Here is a shortcut: https://forums.welltrainedmind.com/classifieds/category/1-root/ -
Logic got pushed to the side and we didn't finish Critical Thinking in middle school and didn't do Traditional Logic I in 8th grade as I had planned. Anyone else done Traditional Logic I without having informal logic for a year or two before? I'm just wondering if we should finish Critical Thinking books or just skip them and go straight into Traditional Logic I?

Classified Board Not Working
Classically Minded replied to Ms Brooks's topic in Site News & Discussions
I don't have a FB and know others that don't either, so that isn't something that just anyone could use. I had put an ad up in the Classifieds a while back and it took forever to get my photo to the right size. It only lasted 3 days, so had to repost again. -
High School Astronomy
Classically Minded replied to Classically Minded's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My DD14 is wanting to take it in a year, so I don't think this will work for her. It says it is recommended for 12th grade, so probably a bit more advanced for her at this point. -
Grammar for the WTM check in
Classically Minded replied to cintinative's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
We have been using a short time and are loving it. We are using it for high school English, that combined with WWS gives us a full credit. -
High School Astronomy
Classically Minded replied to Classically Minded's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I did read that thread yesterday but didn't get much help, other than the 2 I already mentioned above. It seemed like a lot of books on observing or activities, etc. I'm looking for a full curriculum. The best complete text that I can find is the Self-Teaching Guide but I guess I'm hoping for something more. I suppose we could use that as our "spine" and then flesh it out with DVDs, books, etc. I just checked our library and they actually have the Understanding the Universe DVD set! I didn't even think of getting it because we couldn't afford it, so glad we can check it out! Is it a complete credit? I'm assuming it is since it is so many DVDs and looks like a coursebook too. -
I've only been able to find 2 High School Astronomy courses - Self-Teaching Guide and then one on Christianbook, Survey on Astronomy. Are there anymore? I would also like to hear from anyone that has used the above 2 courses and how you liked it or didn't like it.
