  1. English III Saxon Advanced Math Science - Still deciding Notgrass' Exploring Government & Exploring Economics Church History Psychology
  2. Yes, we did and I plan to do so with my ds7 as well when he gets to 3rd grade. Here is what we used: Math - Saxon Math 3 Grammar - First Language Lessons 3 Writing - Writing With Ease 3 Latin - Prima Latina Spelling - Spelling Workout C and D (we also added in All About Spelling because my dd had issues with spelling) Science - Chemistry with Usborne Encyclopedia and Adventures with Atoms and Molecules (lots of extra kits) History - Story of the World 3
  3. What is VP and CHOW? *Nevermind* I figured out what the abbreviations were for.
  4. Update - We started WWE and he is doing amazing with the Narration exercises! He gets almost all the questions and easily comes up with a sentence of what he remembers. Same thing is happening in FLL. So it is definitely not an issue with him not being able to listen and narrate. I've tried several things in SOTW since this post and nothing is working. History is the only subject he's having this problem. I tried letting him read it and that didn't go over well, he was so upset, a lot of the words are ones he's never seen and it is just too hard for him. I'm going to try to just use the Usborne encyclopedia today, since it has pictures and short little explanations. I don't know of another history for 1st grade, seems like everything I've looked at is for older elementary or middle grades.
  5. Have you thought of doing a year or two of online college at home? It sounds like your dd and mine are similar in many ways.
  6. We are using this this coming school year for 11th grade. I've heard nothing but good, so we're excited to use it!
  7. I have the CD but just checked and they have the mp3 of the Audio Companion to First Language Lessons 1 & 2: https://welltrainedmind.com/p/first-language-lessons-audio-companion/ My dd loved the chants on there for grammar, she still remembers them and sings them sometimes! I can't think of anything else other than the CD's we have - CGC has a CD with a lot of science songs. We use Bible Study Guide for All Ages CD for Bible memory songs. I'm sorry, I don't know if they have mp3 format available. I would get a CD player or use a computer to play them. My dd16 uses my Sony Discman that I've had since 1996 - it still works LOL!
  8. Bible - Bible Study Guide for All Ages Reading - WTM Book List Math - Saxon Math 2 Grammar - FLL 2 Writing - WWE Spelling - SWO C & D History - SOTW 2 Science - Earth Science & Astronomy Art - Home Art Studio
  9. I love Considering God's Creation, we are using it with my ds7 and he loves it. We have the audio CD and he especially enjoys the songs. We do a lot of the activities in the activity book and I've added in books, games and videos. I actually just did a post on this the other day on my blog if you want to look, it shows the book, some of the activities and other things we're using. CGC covers Creation, Stars/Sun/Planets, The Earth, Rocks/Minerals, Weather, Plant Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Animal Anatomy & Physiology and Human Anatomy.
  10. I've read it suggested that as long as the child has learned phonics up to a 2nd grade reading level, they are ready to start spelling. We used Spelling Workout (SWO) for my dd, but she needed extra help, so we added in AAS and that worked great for her but was tedious for me. We stopped at AAS 6 and then she ended up finished all the SWO books by 8th grade for extra practice. With my ds, we are using SWO and he is almost done with the first book and having no problems. I'm thinking of adding in some AAS if he shows problems with spelling but so far he seems to be like me, see it once and gets it. It really depends on the child.
  11. Saxon Math Algebra 1/2 would be my recommendation! You can use Saxon Teacher and/or Art Reed's DVD's, my dd16 has used both for years. She scores the highest possible on standardized testing in math. She loves math and has been doing Saxon since 1st grade. She has been independent in math using Saxon since 4th grade using Saxon Teacher. We incorporated Art Reed's DVD's in a few years ago and she absolutely loves him.
  12. I would use the Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, it is laid out very well and you can speed through lessons to find what she doesn't know. Teach the phonics for each lesson and skip the sentences if you she doesn't need review in that particular lesson. You will eventually find where she's at. At the end of the book, she will be on a 4th grade reading level. Here is a chart showing about where each grade begins: Around Lesson 60, you have taught all of the requirements of Kindergarten Start 1st grade lesson material around Lesson 61 Start 2nd grade lesson material around Lesson 120 End of the book ends with 4th grade level words I know late middle school students who had trouble with reading and they went through OPGTR and it filled in areas they had missed that prevented them from advancing. It is my go-to whenever friends ask me for help with their kids in reading. I used it for my dd16 when she was 6/7 and now almost done with it for my ds7, I love it!
  13. So you think he is taking it in but I just can't see it now? That is my hope! I know 9 years ago when I did SOTW with my dd it was so different, she really got into the stories and could answer the questions and tell me things she remembered. I expected that and more out of him because he is so much more advanced than she was.
  14. I'm going to start this coming week then and see how it goes, thanks for the tips!
  15. Sorry if I came across that way lol! My husband reads to him almost every evening fun books, educational books and Bible, so we do also believe it is the most valuable thing and he doesn't narrate any of that. However, he "gets" those books and he talks about them or stops in the middle of them and gets excited about what he's learning or the fun story. He doesn't do ANY of that with SOTW - if anything, it seems as though it is excruciating to him to listen to me read it. That is why I was saying I didn't want to waste my time because it doesn't seem like he is taking it in, more like just waiting for it to be over. He stops me a lot and says, are we almost done?
  16. My dd did cursive in 3rd and 4th grades and then stopped and she doesn't remember how to write it and can't read cursive now at 16. When we went to the DMV, the lady said hardly any kids that come in here can write in cursive. She also said the signature is just how you "sign" your name, it doesn't have to be cursive and it can be same as print if that's how you sign your name. Also the same when we went to the bank to set her up an account, for her signature, she simply wrote her name in print. When my husband's mother sends us letters or cards, the only one that can read them is my husband LOL!! I have no clue what her cursive says and I had cursive all through school from 3rd grade up but I didn't write cursive after high school and I've forgotten it all.
  17. Wow! Thanks for all the replies and advice! He does well in everything else, above and beyond, so that is why I didn't understand this problem he has with telling me one thing he remembers in SOTW. I don't want to just read to him and waste time if he isn't really taking it in or understanding. On the other hand, I really value the 4-year cycle with SOTW and want to do it with him, so I'm going to try several of the ideas mentioned here and we'll see how it goes! If after doing that next week, he still just either can't "get" it or isn't interested, I think I will look into something else, as some of you mentioned - having him pick a history topic, State history, etc.
  18. That's probably a better idea than me making him wait till the end lol - I honestly couldn't even see that. I may try reading a paragraph and then having him say what he remembers and then going on. I don't know why I didn't think of that, it seems so obvious now. I had him watch some elementary DVD's on the Ancient topics and he liked it for a few minutes but could barely stand watching the whole 20 minutes. He did like the one on Mesopotomia. I may try to do more of that along with the reading to help him understand more. But yes, he seems to not understand ancient history - I tried to tell him thousands of years ago but he looks confused. Thanks so much for your help!!
  19. When I've tried to work with him and tell him before I read to listen because he has to tell me something he remembers, it is AGONIZING for him - just like you said! He listens to remember something. I remember recently, he stopped me and said, OK, I have my one thing, can I tell it now? It was excruciating for him to listen to me finish and then finally tell me that one thing (from the beginning of the reading) that he held in his mind lol. You may be right! He is a perfectionist, especially with everything else - everything has to be done a certain way. I'm not entirely sure however, that he "gets" the history stories because he can't tell me about what I read - so confusing. He gets other things he finds interesting and can tell about them, so he can comprehend when he wants to. He has no problem with science - he gets it and is excited about it.
  20. My son is 7 and is gifted in math and reading and a few other things but really struggles with reading comprehension in history. I will read the story to him from SOTW 1, making it as interesting as possible, but he still can't remember ONE thing I read. When my husband reads "fun" books to him, he remembers and when we do Bible, he sometimes remembers at least something. However, he just can't get SOTW no matter how hard I try and even when I ask questions, he has no clue the answer - even when I tell him the answers and then ask him again - blank stare. Seeing how he can't do a simple narration of one thing he can remember, I've held off on even starting WWE 1, since I know it has narration exercises. Do I go with a different history or put history aside altogether? Is it an interest problem or an actual reading comprehension problem? How should I go about figuring this out? Thanks in advance!
  21. This will be my 2nd time through 1st grade, first with my daughter 10 years ago almost, now my son. I saved everything that I used with my daughter, so we are going with the same plan with some tweaks due to my son being gifted in certain areas. I'm not sure if SWO or AAS will work for him, so doing both as I did with my daughter but she had spelling difficulties and I don't think he will. Bible - Bible Study Guide for All Ages Reading - Continue OPGTR & Book Lists Writing - Writing With Ease 1 Grammar - First Language Lessons 1 Math - Saxon Math 1 Spelling - All About Spelling 1 & Spelling Workout A History - Story of the World 1 Science - Animals, Human Body and Plants Art - Home Art Studio
  22. I also didn't get to download my files, I had hundreds from over the years. A lot I was saving for when my son got school-age, which is now and then to find out that the site had malware and I couldn't access it, it looks like it is gone for good.
  23. Oh no, I missed this and I had several things I purchased to use for my son when he came to school-age, which is now. I was unable to access the site, wish I had downloaded everything.
  24. Ok, so in PA, you can't graduate early (15 or 16yrs old) I assume? It is amazing the ways homeschooling differs in other states.
