  1. Nope, all you need is OPGTR! ;)
  2. 20-30minutes of reading that is challenging for the child to read and then 20-30m "fun" reading in the evening, which is at or below their reading level. The read alouds are something that you would read to your child outside the time or at least that is how we do it. We read to her at night an hour or so before bed.
  3. My dd6 was able to do AAS 1 in K and then finishing up the rest of it this fall, so yes it would be ok for a 1st grader depending upon the child.
  4. Here is a 1,000 good books list by grade level: http://www.classical-homeschooling.org/celoop/1000.html
  5. As long as you are past lesson 140 in the OPGTR, you can add in grammar and spelling. I don't think what you listed is too much for a 1st grader because we have that and a bit more for this fall for my dd6. Here is what we are using for spelling and art: All About Spelling & Spelling Workout Artistic Pursuits Book One Drawing books We do spelling 2-3 times a week for 15 minutes and then we will be doing Artistic Pursuits once a week.
  6. We did the first 10 chapters of SOTW 1 in K this past year. We went slow and did a LOT of hands on activities and videos. We spent about 2 months just on Ancient Egypt! My dd retained a lot and can't wait to pick it back up in the fall. We are going to do the rest of the book (32 chapters) for 1st grade.
  7. We are doing both but using R&S 2 for 1st grade and then FLL 2 for 2nd. I find that R&S 2 is really simple and you can do it orally like someone else said.
  8. :iagree: My dd6 is finishing up K and reading on a 3rd grade level right now thanks to OPGTR! We tried Hooked on Phonics a year ago and my daughter would cry every time we would do it! She hated it! Then we moved to OPGTR this past October and it worked for us! ;)
  9. Repetition is a good teacher and your child will KNOW math - that is the Saxon way and why we love it.
  10. We are waiting on our stuff to arrive and I've bought everything except AAS2 and then the next science but we won't start that until November or so because we will be finishing up Astronomy. Here is our 1st Grade lineup: Bible - Golden Childrens Bible Reading - books Writing - Writing with Ease 1 Grammar - Rod and Staff English 2 Spelling - All About Spelling Level 2 & Spelling Workout A Math - Saxon Math 2 History - Story of the World 1 Science - Apologia Astronomy & Zoology Art - Artistic Pursuits 1 We school year-round, so right now for summer (K-1) we are doing: Reading - finishing up OPGTR Writing & Grammar - FLL 1 Spelling - AAS 1 Geography - various resources Science - Zoology 1 Math - finishing up Saxon 1
  11. I would think you would need to add in Writing with Ease to round out your writing but I'm not sure how much writing R&S English does? I actually ordered R&S English 2 this past weekend for my dd6 and hoping its not too much writing - someone had mentioned it was all oral or could be.
  12. It's easy to find out - Saxon has a placement test that will tell you if you can skip 2 and go on to 3: http://saxonhomeschool.hmhco.com/HA/correlations/pdf/p/primaryplacement.pdf
  13. I have a friend that is interested in doing Classical Education the WTM way. Her dd8 will be 3rd grade level this fall and has done different curriculum/styles. Where would she start her daughter? In the 3rd grade rec's? Like do SOTW 3, FLL3, WWE3 and so forth? She is interested in what I'm doing but we are doing 1st grade level materials, so if the child hasn't had grammar or on level curriculum's, I'm not sure how she would work into the WTM methods. Any help or advice is appreciated, thanks! ;)
  14. My dd6 also has a love for Astronomy and I have a lot of bookmarks for things online and thought I would share (believe it or not, this isn't all lol): Teach Space Science Astronomy Resource Links StarChild - Young Astronomers Astronomy.com Kids Astronomy Exploring the Planets Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Nine Planets Kids Nine Planets NASA NASA Kids Space Place NASA Kids Club Star Gazers Space Themes Usborne Astronomy Links HubbleSite Astronomy and Space Solar System Homeschool Tools Kids Space Sites Arty the Astronaunt Solar Views Astronomy Now Online Astronomy Pic of the Day NSTA Astronomy Resources Night Sky Live Goddard Science Goddard Space Flight NASA Education NASA Space Kids NASA Students Space Lapbook Space Suits Interactive Flash Printable Cards Solar System Trading Cards Galaxy Trading Cards Other Pacific Science Center Space Camp Starry Night Education Software
  15. Here is a squidoo page on grammar - it has a lot of links with printables: http://www.squidoo.com/grammar-for-homeschool Then I like the free grammar printables here: http://www.busyteacherscafe.com/printables/languagearts.html HTH!
  16. We used a mini-"Barbie" we got in a happy meal and wrapped her in toilet paper and put stickers to hold it and then used a paper craft sarcophagus that we assembled - dd loved it!
  17. I also go through Amazon and CBO. I've never bought from RR but I did get their huge catalog in the mail yesterday.
  18. I had seen that as well, but I read to her books from the library that go along with the history outside of her independent reading time. Since we only do school 4 days a week - it won't be overkill for her, I don't think, reading for 20m aloud and then having the fun reading in the evening. Basically, right now we spend 20-30m in OPGTR and she is reading aloud. We will just replace that time in the fall with her reading aloud from something at or slightly above her level dealing with history/biographies. So it won't be anything new to her - just that she isn't reading sentences out of the OPGTR but rather a book during that time. Then in the evenings right now, she is already reading the readers for about 15-20m.
  19. You worded it a lot better - that is what I got from the rec's as well. Ok, sounds good and thanks for your help! ;)
