  1. Is Life of Fred Beginning Algebra still available? I would be interested if it is.

  2. Thank you all for your valuable information. I am meeting with him at least 3 times a week for 1 1/2 hours. I have offered for his Mom to do have the cost in barter. I need wallpaper removed from an upstairs bathroom and repainted and she is a home project lady and a professional seamstress. That will help both of us out. I also have need of some cushions being made for our sailboat and she may be able to do that for us. I appreciate all the time and thoughts you shared. Our first session was better than I had expected. My only trouble with him was lack of eye contact as I teach and we will have to work on that as we go. I realize that is a major problem for Aspie's, my grandson is one. We scheduled time in the session for him to talk about his favorite subject, "guns", and to show me demos of guns shooting on his I-Pod. Aspie's always like to talk about their iterests, hobbies or obsessions so we scheduled time in for that and he sets the time on his I-Pod which keeps him involved and makes him feel in control over some of the time. All in all I count our first session a great success. Please feel free to add more info on pricing if you have any.
  3. Hello all, have only been lurking lately but now have an Algebra I student to teach but do not know what is reasonable to charge. I am an experienced, graduate degreed former teacher/principal/educational therapist/homeschooler. In the Atlanta area tutoring is $30+. I charge a minimum of $50 per hour for educational therapy but I have only homeschooled my grandaughter and of course there was no $ involved. What do some of you pay for private teaching per subject? Teaching involves much more than tutoring in terms of prep, grading, record keeping, testing, etc. that a tutor doesn't have to do. Any help is appreciated. Let me know your geographical region when you respond. Thank you so much for any help you can give in this matter. We begin today but have only talked briefly about cost since initially the assignment was to tutor. I forgot to say he has Asperger's, OCD, ADHD and more issues.
  4. That's what I attempted to say also Stephanie. You are so right!
  5. I like doing genre's in 8th. We do a book from the major genre's and the first half of the year and the second half of the year we do short stories and poetry. We write weekly in each genre and of course we write poems in poetry and short stories. There are great short stories available online. I hope this was helpful. I don't think skipping lit in any grade is advisable. I also think review of grammar is profitable in 8th grade since writing should be intense in HS and there is not much time for formal grammar. Don't forget complex sentences sstructure and semicolons. Write write write along with your reading. I hope this was helpful.
  6. Incredible strength and focus for both of them. We will probably be seeing more of this style ballet. Carolyn
  7. Since she has just had the major move and adjustment, I wouldn't tell her now unless she asks to have him visit. I am so sorry for you, your girls and your grandmother. My favorite kitty of 18 years died a couple of years ago and within a month, I had a heart attack. I believe the grief over him was a contributing factor. Shortly afterwards, I read about the broken heart diagnosis, especially in women. Grief of any kind goes straight to the heart. I will pray for you all. I now am nursing my other almost 17 year old cat who is having trouble walking and will pass or be put down soon. I love him dearly but he is not my favorite like his brother. I will grieve but it will not let it break my heart this time. How do animals get so into our hearts? Carolyn
  8. Prayers for moments of happiness in the hours of grief and big hugs from God and friends. Carolyn
  9. :D This is the funniest show on TV and :iagree:with what all of you previously posted. We race home every Wednesday night from church so we can see it. We loved the episode last season with Brick and Betty White as librarian. How about the Christmas episode? :D:D:D I agree that the dad on this show is portrayed as the man of the house and last night when Frankie (Patricia Heaton) threw her back out and didn't want to tell her husband was so sweet and when he lifted her out of the tub wrapped in a shower curtain, I thought I would cry it was so precious. I also loved the Wonder Woman episode last season. Do you think Brick is an Aspie, high functioning, focused on one activity (reading), no social skills and quirky? We get a rerun of Wednesday night on Friday here in the Atlanta area so if we miss it we can see it then. I guess Friday night is not a prime night for any show so they fill in with Wednesday's winning schedule. I wish it had won the Emmy!
  10. Thank you all for your valued opinions. With the list I have and your recommendations, I am well into Christmas and next year's BD budget.:( What's a grandma to do? Sell the family jewels on Ebay I guess. :D I could wait until you all sell yours next year here. Oh, I forgot, we all keep most of our goodies. Keep me in mind if you do decide to sell any of them and pm me before you post them. Mich elle, I checking with my husband about the Quantum Mechanics. He's the engineering physics guy.
  11. I got mine yesterday and I was so surprised. I thought it was supposed to come in mid-August so I had forgotten. Whooo HOOO!!!!!!!:cheers2::willy_nilly:
  12. If your had $200 - 250 to spend on Great Courses from the 70% off catalogue, what would you purchase? I teach my 10th grade dgd and have a gifted 4th grade dgs who loves anything to do with flying, planes and physics and my husband and I are life long learners with bachelors and graduate degrees. I would like to enrich my dgc first but I have a keen interest in the brain and how it works from my graduate level studies in LD and am a stroke victim and so I have to have the course on Understanding the Brain $54.95. That leaves about $200. What would you recommend and why? I would like those of you who own and have used any of the current courses to give me your valued opinions. I am currently using TC Chemistry, World History and have used Alg I and II so I am familiar with the TC courses and their quality. We will be using the TC Illiad and Odyssey in our World Literature in a few weeks and I have those as well. HELP!:001_unsure: Thank you in advance for helping me decide. Just had a birthday and have some BD $$$ I want to spend on these TC bargains. I normally buy used from this board.
  13. Praying for your loss. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Carolyn
  14. I have worked with many children with dyslexia. They are in their skin, you don't have to tell them they have learning disabilities, they already know it. Children with learning difficulties are very relieved, for the most part, to know what makes them different. Most students with dyslexia have average or above average intellectual ability but the dyslexia interfers with their learning. Knowing will give you the tools to know how to modify his academics to facilitate learning. Don't be afraid of knowing or your child knowing. He will be able to handle it. Most have already developed and are using compensatory measures in their strength areas and you can tap into the knowledge they already have about how they learn best and teach to their strengths while patching holes in their foundational weaknesses.
  15. My daughter had a Miele until they moved to a new home and it had central vac. She still says she liked the Miele much better and wishes they hadn't sold it on Craig's List.
  16. So sorry for your loss. Prayers, hugs and more prayers and hugs.:grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: Curl up and rest and sleep. Carolyn
  17. This southern girl was raised on sweet tea and I never thought I could drink it without sugar but guess what? I now drink it with lemon only, not even Stevia. I have lost my tastw for that sweet southern tea that I thought ran in my veins instead of blood. I have always liked black coffee with half and half and I was never a Coke lover. I drink mostly water, water, water sometimes with lemon or lime and sometimes without. I also like unflavored seltzer with a bit of whatever juice we have in the house for a rare treat. It has saved me some money at restaurants over the years. I carry a ziplock bag in my purse with my favorite tea, stevia, crystalized real lemon and packets of honey for those times when there is nothing without sugar or aspartame on the menu. I just lost my taste for sweet drinks and I don't even use Stevia that often. Saves money and calories. What could be better. Husband went off aspartame about a year ago at the request of our oldest daughter and he has had a dramatic change in his mood swings. He used to be the easiest going man on earth but in the last year or so had grown irritable with everyone. My daughter had a list of symptoms of reactions to aspartame and we could check off almost all of them for him. She challenged him to go two weeks without his diet Coke and even he saw a dramatic difference. He hasn't gone back. He occasionally drinks a Jones Cola because he likes cola products and Jones does not have high fructose corn syrup in it but evaporated cane juice. The're expensive and hard to find so he doesn't drink them often. In the process, he also lost about 25 lbs without changing anything but dropping the diet Coke. He is now occasionally ordering water in a restaurant when I order water. Little changes for our health do have big impact. Keep it up!!!!!
  18. Welcome Andrea. Glad you're out of the closet or is it off the shelf? I was a lurker also but joining in is much more fun. Sounds like you are enjoying homeschooling after the traumatic first year we all have had. I once heard that homeschooling was made for Aspies or is it vice versa? Your boys are very fortunate to be at home with you. Carolyn in Georgia
  19. Thanks so much Hive for your prayers. I've already suggested the Congressman to hubby but will add your advice as well. "Out of the mouth of two or three let a thing be established", you know!
  20. I have just prayed for LisaK in VA's husband on a job interview and have prayed and lurked on this forum for over a year without ever asking you to pray for me or mine. I have a prayer request for my husband. He works at the Marine Logistics Base in Albany GA as a computer programmer. He has worked for three different companies during his two years there. He is currently working for AT&T (the best of the three for benefits,etc.). He had to have a top secret security clearance to work there and was given an interim clearance in the beginning but sometime during the change of employers prior to AT&T it was overlooked that he only had an interim clearance and the person who was supposed to keep the clearance investigation going for the permanent security clearance dropped the ball. In December, when it was time for him to renew his pass to get on to the base it was discovered and he hasn't been able to be on base to work since that date. They started his security clearance officially in February and it is still not completed. He luckily was able to do training for an additional certification and has been working on that since February and is almost finished but needs to have the security clearance comleted in order to get back to the real job on the base. He spoke yesterday with the person over AT&T's security department and she said that there is a backup in with Uncle Sam right now and this is not an unusual wait time. His goals for this year from AT&T have been to get the Oracle training and certification and get his security clearance. One he can control and the other is in the hands of Uncle Sam. I know this is long but I didn't know how else to communicate all of this. As a wife and mother and grandmother, I am patiently waiting and praying and talking to God if I feel fearful but today when I was praying for LisaK in VA's dear husband's job interview, I thought I got a nudge from God to get the hive working on a prayer for Uncle Sam to get moving on my hubby's security clearance so he can go back to Albany, GA to work on the military base there. He loves his job and feels like it was a gift from God two years ago. God hears the prayers of the hive and someone has his paperwork on their desk and needs to pick it up and finish it. Love all of you and love this community. Thanks in advance for the knee time. I'll keep you informed of the progress. Carolyn in Georgia
  21. Praying. I am so glad we can depend upon God and not the economy. Rom. 8:28 is my fav verse. What doesn't fall into the category of "ALL"? Even the bad economy is working together for good because of Him. God orders our steps and lights our path. :grouphug:
  22. I find it very interesting that the CIA can't locate Osama Ben Laden but they can locate an obscure purchase of used curriculum on a homeschool web site. Who knew?:patriot:
  23. Praying His peace, our love and prayers :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: will be known to your Mom, you and all your families. Carolyn
