  1. Hello, We are brand new to homeschooling this year. We live in Oakland, CA and I have a rising 10th grader who previously had attended a mix of public and private schools. He was chugging along in his first year of high school and we didn't expect any changes. He started to develop anxiety over his workload and begged us to take him out. Said he couldn't continue at the school and was losing his love of learning. He finished his 9th grade year and we committed to finding him a solution. So, here we are! Thrust into this brave new world of homeschooling. We love A Well-Trained Mind as it suits his type of learning and so we intend to proceed down that path. I've joined a few forums on homeschooling and what I originally thought was going to be straightforward has now become a muddled mess in my brain. We thought we'd file as a PSA and do the WTM curriculum, but then someone suggested that since we were new and if we ever changed our minds about continuing with homeschooling, the better option would be to file through a charter to make sure he gets credit for his homeschooling coursework if he ever wants to transfer back to a public or private school. Without a crystal ball, it's hard to know whether that will happen, but I don't want him to have to repeat a grade because of this. We'd like to follow the WTM curriculum through a mix of at home learning and taking classes at the local community college. So, we're looking for a charter that won't require us to take their online classes and will give us maximum flexibility around coursework. Here are my questions: 1. Is it possible to join a charter that's more hands-off and lets you pursue a curriculum like WTM with the occasional check-ins? 2. Does anyone have any recommendations for a charter that is in Alameda County, CA? 3. Is there anything else I should be aware of or navigate to on this site for more issues to consider homeschooling a high schooler who plans to go to college? Thank you all so much.
