  1. Dd 8 has been using Singapore math since 1st grade. During K we did some MEP and a little Singapore but she was frustrated by SM so we put it away and played games and MEP. When I got the 1a book out the next year she did fine, it was almost like she grew into it and got it immediately without difficulty. Last year we did 2A, some MEP, and some of 2B. We started back with 2B this year and she is really kicking up a stink. She says that she hates math and is dumb, but she gets it very easily. Much of the time she just looks at the problem, thinks for a minute and then has the answer. She only gets the occaisional problem wrong. She can even do the word problems - although prefers to work them out instinctively then thinking through whether to multiply, divide etc. So, I don't know what to do. Do I persevere with Singapore, do I try something else? I keep looking at MM but I just can't seem to really warm to it. I really love SM, my dd12 has done so well with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Trenna
  2. What are 10 days games, never heard of these before? I, too, would love a recommendation for a beginning watercolor book. I've tried one of two from the library but wasn't too thrilled with them.
  3. We have tried a number of things for dd12 - we gave them a fair trial of about 6 weeks but the only thing that has worked is Proactiv. We even tried the ingredients from proactive - benx prox I think - and they did not work in the stuff I bought from the store but definately have in the Proactiv. Her skin now is not perfect but so much better. We tried the Mary Kay ?Vitality - didn't work for her but my nephew had good luck with it. I think different things work for different people - you have to keep trying until you hit the right one.
  4. :bigear: I don't but I want to. Hope you get some replies.
  5. We just started last week and I had planned on using KISS grammar, but now I'm really not sure about it. However, I don't know what to use instead. I used Abeka our first 2 years, but it was so contrived and so slow in progressing. Last year I used Grammar Town, gives the whole picture much more quickly and used more real sentences, not so contrived. But, it's expensive and KISS is free. The problem with the KISS sentences is that they are TOO real, so you end up with big chunks of sentence that you are not really able to analyse at the start. Anyone know of a good, cheap, uncontrived, but not crazy program :bigear:
  6. I am reading this thread with interest as I have always believed that one can not lose salvation but have someone very dear to me who believes otherwise. I am wondering - what does endure mean? Many have mentioned we must endure to the end but what does this mean? Also, what if one has walked away at some point and then suddenly dies, if by chance it happened while one was away from God does that mean that one is then condemned?
  7. Those are fantastic results! Congratulations!!
  8. I am so sorry. Am praying for you and your family. :grouphug:
  9. Yeah, sorry it is a strange one. But for some reason it's very hard to find any kind of answer on the internet about this troubling question. I just knew that people here on WTM would be able to throw some light on the subject.
  10. Oh no,:001_huh:, this probably means it's only going to get worse. I don't really mind what they do in the privacy of their own pond, but I don't want heart broken dds because of a duck killed by a rampant goose:lol:. I have wondered about this duck, she does spend a lot of time quacking loudly to get attention.
  11. Oh my goodness! The goose is quite mean and I wouldn't be sorry to see the back of him. My dh just got the goslings this spring in the hope that they would settle the gander down, and he still holds out hope for baby goslings next year.
  12. Thanks for the info. I think geese are supposed to be seasonal - only have babies in spring I think - so I was a bit surprised. I'll have to pay close attention to the gander. He has seemed a bit more feisty generally recently - hopefully it will pass off soon. Thanks, Trenna
  13. No, I know they can't breed but we're worried about the goose killing the duck as she is quite small. I'm wondering if they are anything like dog's etc who go ön heat"for a short period and then off. We are wondering if and when it is safe to let them all together again.
  14. Does anybody know how long a duck's fertile period lasts? We got 2 ducks in April, they have been hanging out with the 2 female goslings and also the mature male goose. The other day the goose tried to mate with the duck, so we have had to keep them separate because he killed a chicken trying the same thing. We've been trying to find out how long we need to do this for, and nowhere seems to say. I thought maybe she was giving off hormones which caused the goose to do this, he hasn't tried it with the goslings yet ( as far as I know) Any information will be greatly appreciated.:D Thanks, Trenna
  15. I don't use that system myself but wondered if you could just focus at first on the subjects you are more behind in until you caught everything up to the same place and just go on from there. If math is the furthest along - week 34 - then catch up all the other subjects first, until you get to week 34, and then all will finish together. Don't know if that makes sense or is possible, just a thought. Trenna
  16. I have been wondering about using the Creek Edge task cards but wasn't able to see many samples, so wasn't sure how they'd work. Good to hear they would fit in well.
  17. I'm the major earner, about 70/30 I think. My dh can't get any work that earns a decent amount and if he worked full time I would still have to work and we wouldn't have anyone to be with the girls. Before the crash I was a SAHM for about 18 months, but most of our marriage I've been the major earner. My dh is extremely smart but is a bit of an absent minded professor, which doesn't always help the job prospects. I organize and do most of the homeschooling, dh supervises and helps teach things like Latin, logic and art. Even the topics he helps teach - I do the organizing. I should add that I work part time as an RN, fortunately I can earn enough for us to get by and still only work 2 shifts a week instead of 3, for which I am thankful. Dh works part time teaching at a CC and is studying for his PhD
  18. I'm a working, homeschooling mom too. I work 26 hours a week so not full time but I wish I didn't have to work quite so many hours. I have to work to pay the mortgage now as my dh can only find part time work that is not very well paid. It's good for people to realize that they don't know someone else's circumstances and so should not judge their actions, some people really do need to work outside the home. To those that don't, I say enjoy and I hope you realize how fortunate you are.
  19. Just wanted to say that some of the items needed for ACS chemistry look like they are cheaper at Delta education - for instance the density cubes are $19.95. I haven't checked out there yet so don't know for sure that they sell to others and not just schools - hope not. Also, they have the balance used in the course for $4.95. I've been looking through this course and it looks great - I'm looking forward to it. Trenna
  20. Thanks for the information. I was looking at the American Weigh scales, good to know that they're usually ok as the price is really good. I thought it might be as well to get the 0.01g scale but I think at least 1 lesson calls for a scale to weigh more than 100 g so the 500 g might be better for this. Thanks again for the help. Trenna
  21. I need to get a scale that weighs at least to 0.1g and I think a balance for the ACS middle school chemistry course. I really need to get something cheap but that works. I would like to order from Amazon if possible as I have a few more days on a trial Prime membership. I've been looking at some of the pocket digital scales but am worried that they'll be too small. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thanks Trenna
  22. Hi! I do live at the Lake of the Ozarks. I'd be happy to tell you about it. The lake area is really several small towns scattered around the Lake of the Ozarks. The closest city is probably Jefferson City which is the MO capitol. The cities of Columbia and Springfield are just about 11/2 hours drive away. One side of the lake, over by Osage Beach is the busier side, the West side, over by Sunrise Beach, tends to be a bit quieter, less partying. There are several smaller homeschool groups in the area. There is one in Camdenton that meets for social things, like park day, and another that has some classes twice a month. This second group is not quite a homeschool co-op yet but is working towards this. There has been a very active homeschool group in the town of Lebanon, it was very active, seemed to kind of lose steam for a while, but may be reorganizing from what I've heard. Not sure if I'm telling you what you need to know so please ask any questions you like.
