  1. Sure, he could have dilute urine from drinking a lot. I would do the bloodwork to rule the kidneys in or out as the problem and go from there. You would also want to know if they are functioning properly before doing other things like taking his water away at night, etc. to control the leaking while he is sleeping. It is usually older females that can have this problem but there are meds that can be used to help control incontinence like phenylpropanalamine.

  2. I looked at that thread that Jean posted and I have to agree with Hornblower. I am going to be very blunt because I have seen horrible outcomes in these kind of cases. I have zero tolerance for biting dogs, no matter how they behave otherwise. This dog can turn on you or your children at any time and it may mean life-altering injuries. I would get rid of the dog or put it down.

  3. What kind of hernia? Scrotal, inguinal or abdominal? If it is reducible (goes back in) it is not an emergency. If it is hard and does not go back in he should be looked at asap.

  4. Hi Cindy,

I'm not a mouse expert but I would err on the side of caution and not get another mouse until this one expires. I don't think chloroform would be best and I'm not sure you could buy it anyway. I have a friend who euthanized her rats by running the car exhaust into the sealed glass cage with a hose and duct tape. She said it did not take very long and it sounds humane to me.

  5. We've done the Apologia Astronomy book and have started the Botany one. It's clearly a big step up from the Astronomy book. Why not start with that one? My ds 6 could cope with Astronomy, but he couldn't yet with the Botany book (doing that one with dds 9 and 10).

One last piece of advice, if you live in the middle of Central Asia, don't start the Botany book on the 10th of January, there won't be ANYTHING to look at outside for quite some time, dhoooo, how stupid am I?!:D

Or if you live in Minnesota ;). We'll be starting this some time in April!

  6. Blindness, heart murmur, vomiting....they might all be related...or not. 8 is a little young to consider hyperthyroidism but it is a possiblity, or kidney disease. Hypertension? I would want to see him sooner than later, like today. Get a good physical exam, CBC, scan and abdominal film if you can afford it and then make a decision. It might be that he has something highly treatable or not but a good vet will try to help you make an educated decision as to what is best for you and your pet.

  7. Sorry, I've been gone for awhile.

I would take abdominal x-rays to rule out a mass in an older kitty, especially if her kidneys are fine. The thyroid test may still be an option if the abd. rads are normal, at least you would have an answer to why she is doing this even if you opt to not treat hyperthyroidism.

  8. Sorry, I've been gone!

Dog parks are a hazard for puppies or dogs with weakened immune systems. Sure, there are other cases where things can be picked up but dogs develop a natural resistance to most intestinal parasites. It could be that your dogs were exposed to Giardia in some way and a dog park would be a place where the likelihood would go up for that kind of exposure.

  9. I would take the train into Penn Station. Then you are in midtown where you can walk to AG easily or down to the Statue of Liberty. The Statue is down by battery park at the tip of Manhattan but I have walked from there all the way up to Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (about 80 blocks). You can go through Little Italy on your way back up to midtown. Don't forget Ground Zero and Ellis Island which are both down by lady liberty.

  10. Yes, those changes are good. Also, some cats need some antibiotics if there is a secondary staph infection. If it is allergy related then steroids may be in order (after a course of antibiotics).

  11. I haven't leased, but around here the leasor (you) is usually responsible for vet bills, farrier and upkeep especially if it is onsite. If it is an offsite lease then the leasee (them) pay for board, feed, etc. I would just make sure you have a viable written contract so both parties know what their financial responsibilities are. I have had more than one experience with the leasee bringing in the colic that needs surgery and the owner hasn't been contacted yet but it is just assumed they want to pay for it! Ugh.

  12. Driving through Gettysburg with the CD was very moving. Takes 2-3 hours and it is really powerful, can't explain, you just have to do it to understand.

I was just in Philly and Independence Hall, Liberty Bell and the Constitution Center are all right next to eachother, not to mention a ton of historic homes and businesses and Franklin's grave all within walking distance. Penn's landing is nearby as well as where Washington crossed the Delaware.

DC is great too. If you are short on time I recommend one of the trolley tours where you can hop on and off at the sites you like.

  14. As the Director of a homeschool co-op, I would be chagrined to hear you could not keep your initial commitment as flexible as I realize we all need to be. At 17, how important is it for your ds to take calculus right now this semester? It seems there must be other ways around this that would allow you to honor your commitment.

Just my two cents, but I know I would be very disappointed if a teacher abruptly changed the game plan midway through the year. I've had it happen, but it was due to a major accident and not anything within their control.

  15. Piperazine is fine used at the right dose. Follow the instructions according to your pet's weight and redose at 2-3 weeks because it won't get the larval stages. Some side effects include diarrhea and vomiting. It has a wide margin of safety so overdosage is unlikely.
